Queen Vic's silk stockings sell for £690
Published: 06th April 2010
An item of clothing formerly belonging to Queen Victoria has sold for almost 700 pounds at auction this month.
It was revealed at the start of the month that black and white tights that used to adorn the legs of the country's longest-serving monarch bear a royal crest and are believed to have been the favourite style of the head of state in the 1870s.
The hand-stitched stockings claimed no less than £690 at the auction house's Edinburgh sale and passed an initial valuation of around £400.
It was understood that the previous owner's family do not know how the pair fell into their hands, though it was claimed that a lot of Victoria's wardrobe was distributed to members of the household when she died in 1901.
Lee Young, a specialist with Lyon and Turnbull auction house, said: "Examples of the Queen's undergarments have long been considered the crowning glory for Victoriana collectors around the world."
Recently, the Queen's Gallery started showcasing the Victoria & Albert: Art & Love exhibition, which brings together over 400 items from the Royal Collection from Queen Victoria's rule.
