Toronto museum to exhibit history of socks

The Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto has revealed that it is opening newest exhibition, which will provide a remarkable insight into the remarkable world of footwear, which it is surprised to see is "one of the least-researched items of dress".
Senior museum curator Elizabeth Semmelhack announced Socks: Between You and Your Shoes that will feature around 40 rare pieces of hosiery, including a sock dating back to the thirteenth century made of human hair, alongside footwear and socks once worn by Otzi men 5,300 years ago.
Ms Semmelhack excitedly explained: "For thousands of years, people around the world have sought to separate themselves from their shoes with all manner of socks. Some are humble, some are splendid but all were created to make us more comfortable as we walk through life".
She added that while knitted socks are commonplace now, knitting was first developed in the middle or near east between 500 and 1200, adding that the oldest example is a 900-year-old sock excavated in Egypt.
The Bata Shoe Museum has all sorts of other things for people to see, including Chinese bound foot shoes, ancient Egyptian sandals, chestnut-crushing clogs and platform boots from all ages.
