UK retail sector still growing
Published: 10th August 2010
Sales in the UK's non-food, non-store retail sector - internet, mail order and phone sales - saw double figure growth in July, according to new figures.
According to the latest BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor for July, this sector grew in value by 11.3 per cent compared to the same month in 2009.
Despite these relatively strong figures the overall picture was less promising, with overall UK retail sales values growing by just 2.6 per cent on last July, suggesting more people may be looking beyond the high street for their gift socks or funky tights.
Stephen Robertson, director general, British Retail Consortium (BRC), pointed out, however, that the growth in the non-food, non-store sector was slower than in previous months.
"Eleven per cent growth is not to be sniffed at and the comparison is with last year's second strongest month but, in the context of non-store retailing's rapid growth, it's disappointing," he said.
Online clothes sales were up by 22 per cent in June compared to the year before, according to figures from IMRG/Capgemini.
