Armoured socks developed for hockey players

A Canadian firm has responded to the dangerous environment created by its national sport by developing hosiery to prevent an all-too-common injury on the ice.
As on of the fastest and most dangerous sports in the world, ice hockey is known for its injuries and in the past two NHL seasons, star players including Andrei Markov, Cam Ward and Teemu Selanne have all had serious cuts from skate blades, according to Intelligent Apparel.
As a result, it has created socks with fabric fortified with DuPont Kevlar to protect Achilles tendons and calf muscles from laceration caused by other players' skate blades.
Marshall Ferneyhough, director of sales for Intelligent Apparel, explained that the Tactics Armoured Hockey Socks are a direct response to the interest in enhancing player safety that is currently hanging over hockey organisations across the world, mostly in Canada and the US.
"These past few seasons have been particularly plagued with severe skate blade injuries that could end a player's season, if not career. Our goal was to develop a skate sock that would perform and protect at the highest level of sport."
The NHL is gearing up for yet another outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day, when the Boston Bruins will play the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park, the home of baseball's Boston Red Sox, in the third event of its kind in a row.
