Queen Vic's stockings to go under the hammer
Published: 25th February 2010
A pair of Queen Victoria's finest undergarments are to go under the hammer at an auction next month in Edinburgh.
The black and white hand-stitched silk stockings, with crests, are valued at around £400 and are believed to date from 1874, when she was in her mid-50s.
It is widely understood that they are compliant with the monarch's favourite design during the 1870s.
"When I was shown the stockings by the current owner, I was immediately reminded of a scene in the film The Young Victoria, where Prince Albert knelt at Queen Victoria's feet and rolled her silk stockings up her legs."
He added that the hosiery contradicts the image of the Queen as an elderly lady dressed in black at all times.
Queen Victoria came to power, aged 18, in 1837 and reigned until her death in 1901, and after 63 years in charge, remains the longest-serving British monarch.
