BBC expenses extend to £50 of socks
Published: 20th July 2009
The raft of expenses scandals continues in the UK, with the BBC again disappointing the journalistic community at large with its latest announcement of gift expenditure.
While £666 was spent on 14 Molton Brown gift sets and a further £250 spent on other toiletries, controller of BBC One Jay Hunt also managed to splurge £50 on luxury socks for a leading supplier, choosing the softest material possible: cashmere.
The TaxPayers' Alliance was particularly angry over this socks purchase, with Matthew Sinclair, research director at the organisation, telling the Daily Express: "Some of these claims are a clear abuse of public money."
However, the list of 'unnecessary' expenditures continued, with Alan Yentob - who is believed to earn between well over £300,000 - claiming £160 for a dinner with Nigella Lawson to discuss her contract.
Maybe she should have just cooked for him at her place!
Nigella may no longer be the diva of cookery on TV, however, with Sophie Dahl being offered her own BBC cookery series last week.
