Traction satisfaction gained from socks over shoes?
Published: 02nd July 2009
You know the situation: you're walking along on a cold day and to add insult to atmospheric injury, footing is lost on ice - along with grace and pride - and you hit the floor.
Not to worry, say scientists at the University of Otago in New Zealand - simply swap your socks and shoes around and walk on the hosiery instead.
The plucky Kiwis, who are currently well into winter now, ran the tests to see if the likes of Dunedin - a particularly hilly area - could be traversed, with socks being a great thing to use.
Dr Lianne Parkin of the university said: "It was an opportunity for some of the investigators to put their theoretical knowledge about randomised controlled trials into practice, it was great fun and we found that socks really do seem to help."
Yet despite this traction satisfaction gained from wearing socks over shoes, there was only one downside registered by those taking part in the trial - a distinct feeling of embarrassment at the fashion statement being made.
Dunedin reputedly has the world's steepest residential road in the form of Baldwin Street.
