Coloured sock search yields Papal approval
Published: 15th July 2010
Most people probably wouldn't travel all the way to Rome in order to quench their desire for colourful and interesting socks.
One man, however, claims to have been forced into an international search to satisfy his need for vibrant, coloured socks.
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, the man, known only as the Urban Gardner, describes his inability to find men's socks of a colourful enough hue in the US and his search for socks in France and Italy.
"Perhaps my most inspired sock purchase, however, came in Rome last November at one of several shops that cater to the ecclesiastical trade on a small street near the Pantheon," he explained.
"I bought surprisingly affordable mid-calf socks in Papal purple."
The socks come from Gammarelli, the Pope's official tailor.
Colourful socks designed to spice up a drab business suit have been made popular in recent years, with newscaster Jon Snow penchant for wearing vibrant cottonsocks on the Channel 4 News programme.
