Online retail expected to grow
Published: 05th July 2010
The online retail sector will grow by over 36 per cent over the next 18 months, a new report has found.
People buying socks online could be helping to boost the internet retail market, after the latest PayPal Online Retail Report found that the online retail sector is expected to grow by £8 billion from its current value to be worth over £30 billion by the end of 2012.
The report shows that if current growth levels continue, ten per cent of all retail sales will occur online.
Commenting on the findings, the director of the Centre for Retail Research Professor Joshua Bramfield said: "It will continue to expand and of course there will be some companies that double every year and there are other companies that grow by only ten per cent.
"Obviously there will be plenty of companies that will grow quickly."
He added that online shopping will never completely replace traditional high street stores.
