Socks boost online sales

Socks boost online sales
Online retailers saw internet purchases soar in the month of June, according to the latest IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

June witnessed total online sales increase by 20 per cent year-on-year in the UK, with purchases for items such as socks and tights contributing to a 22 per cent rise in the clothing sector.

A combination of the good weather, the World Cup and Wimbledon are being seen as the main reasons behind Brits spending £4.4 billion online during the month.

The figures represent the second successive month with year-on-year growth of 20 per cent or more, meaning that the first six months of 2010 have yielded a 15 per cent increase on internet-based sales compared to the first six months of 2009.

"We're seeing evidence that the e-commerce sector is returning to health - both in terms of business confidence and online sales," commented PayPoint.net managing director Michael Norton.

SockShop is one of over a hundred e-retailers that contribute regularly to the monthly survey.
