England sees red over choice of socks
Published: 22nd June 2010
In an all-white kit is how most people would picture the England football team lifting the World Cup at Soccer City in Johannesburg later this summer.
But the FA is turning to a little seen all-red outfit, complete with red socks, for the must-win clash with global football minnows Slovenia on Wednesday.
The strip was last seen in a friendly match against Belgium in 1970 but has only ever once been worn in a World Cup finals match.
England heroically drew nil-nil with Bulgaria while donning the red strip at the World Cup finals in Chile in 1962.
The England team socks were highlighted before the World Cup in an article in the Times as boasting some advanced material that is designed to stop the socks from wrinkling or creasing as the wearer runs around.
