Sheep socks - would ewe believe it?
Published: 18th June 2010
Most people would probably associate sheep with such fashion accessories as woolly jumpers or fine merino scarves, but it seems in Australia there is a different craze taking the livestock world by storm.
Sheep wearing socks have caused a stir among local farmers, according to Queensland's Courier Mail.
The socks are made from spear grass, thriving as a result of recent rains, which is attaching itself to the sheep's wool.
Roly Hughes, a local grazier with around 3,000 sheep, said he is amazed at what he has seen and is worried the socks can pull the fleece of the sheep when they eventually fall off.
"It's just another one of those things you have to deal with in this industry. We're doing everything we can to look after our sheep," he told the paper.
Socks and animals hit the headlines for another reason recently. A Brownie troop in the US collected hundreds of pairs to create toys for sheltered cats and dogs, the Livingston Daily reported.
