Sock factory job fears
Published: 30th June 2010
A 128-year-old Leicestershire company could be facing tough times ahead after losing a Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract, it has been reported.
HJ Hall in Hinckley has been manufacturing socks for the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Airforce for the past 80 years, according to This Is Leicestershire.
However, the firm has lost its MoD contract to a rival Northern Ireland-based enterprise that will churn out some 2.5 million socks over the next four years.
HJ Hall's sales and marketing director Anton Jenkins said: "I don't think it's right that men who are out there defending the country in all weathers should be wearing the cheapest socks the MoD can get."
Soldiers' socks recently made the Warrington Guardian after a woman whose son is serving in Afghanistan raised over 1,600 pairs to send to troops on the frontline.
