Socks for soldiers campaign
Published: 07th June 2010
British soldiers serving in Afghanistan will not have to worry about getting cold feet before going into battle following a campaign that saw over 1,600 pairs of black sports socks being donated to troops on the front line.
The community sock drive was the inspiration of Dot Glassey, whose son Daniel is serving in Afghanistan, the Warrington Guardian reports.
He had complained of a lack of socks while on tour in the inhospitable country.
Richard Nicholson from the First Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, collected the black sports socks after a coffee morning and appeals raised 1,600 pairs.
In the US, the Nevada Appeal recently reported on an eight-year-old girl's crusade to collect socks for local children's hospitals that sparked a competition between schools to raise the most socks.
Bethanney Wilder started her Tiny Toes Sock Drive in memory of twin sister Faith who died as a result of congenital birth defects.
