Industry gets tights in a twist over 'nude' colour controversy

Published: 21st May 2010

With a storm emerging following the description of Michelle Obama's dress as 'nude' and 'flesh-coloured', it seems the fashion industry might have to change what it means by the colour 'nude'.

'Nude' has long been a term that can apply to tights and legwear, but as a race row erupts its use is coming into question.

The terms 'nude' and 'flesh-coloured' have long been interchangeable but the question of whose flesh it is has recently been raised.

Elle magazine editor Lorraine Candy told the Guardian newspaper there is nothing wrong with this.

She said: "Nude is a defined colour. It's white nude, not black nude, but it's not the colour of my skin either. I'm see-through white.

"With someone as powerful and amazing as Michelle Obama, I think it's the wrong thing to get worked up about."
