Loose fitting socks 'can help varicose veins'

Loose fitting socks 'can help varicose veins'
Researchers in Berlin have offered a number of tips that can help with the reduction and treatment of varicose veins.

Loose-fitting socks and tights have been advised as being one of the best ways of reducing the ill effects of varicose veins.

Patients with varicose veins should avoid socks or stockings that constrain the leg in one place, according to Germany's Association of Internists (BDI).

Ninety per cent of varicose veins occur in the legs, according to the association.

Wearing the right kind of socks or legwear can also help with other conditions.

The NHS advises people who could be at risk of suffering from deep vein thrombosis to wear elastic compression stockings when travelling long distances, such as on long-haul flights.
Meanwhile, bacterial infections can be avoided by wearing socks that will absorb moisture, such as thick, soft socks made of natural fibres or sports socks.
