£250k winner proves that all you need is socks
Published: 19th November 2009
One man has experienced a dream of a day out when heading to see Saracens take on South Africa at Wembley Stadium.
Stuart Tinner, a 24-year-old Job Centre worker from Welwyn Garden City, was chosen at random to take part in a crossbar challenge in front of the thousands of fans who turned out to see the international exhibition match at England's leading stadium.
The young fan, who plays in Welwyn RFC's fifth team as a hooker, decided to remove his shoes and go for it wearing nothing but his socks, and from 30 metres out, the man nailed the target, sending Wembley into an eruption of cheers.
Mr Tinner said of his socks-based triumph: "It's an amazing feeling and I've just won £250,000. I'm still in a daze. I really can't believe it. I'll have a good weekend first."
Saracens also won the game 24-23, which many considered to be a surprising loss for the opposing Springboks.
