Buy socks, get face in Times Square
Published: 04th November 2009
People wanting their 15 minutes, or seconds, of fame ought to get themselves over to the US - after all, they're going to at least need to buy a pair of socks in a leading American store.
This week, American Eagle announced that people who shop at the soon-to-open flagship store in Times Square could have their image on a 25-storey electronic billboard above its entrance at one of the world's busiest intersections.
Anyone buying something in the shop from November 19th will have their photo, alongside their own message, posted on the electronic billboard within 15 minutes of their purchase - something which will likely have people going for the cheapest options, namely socks, tights and leggings.
Commenting on the strategy, Tim Tompkins, the president of Times Square Alliance which represents businesses in the area, said: "Narcissism knows no bounds in Times Square. I suspect this will become part of the Times Square experience."
Yesterday, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was announced to follow a different route this year, though it will continue to run along Times Square but avoid Broadway.
