NFL gives player $5,000 fine... for socks violation
Published: 05th November 2009
One of the more controversial figures in the world of American football has been handed a fine this week - for not showing enough white on his socks during a game for his team, the Miami Dolphins.
The National Football League (NFL) handed Joey Porter a $5,000 (£3,000) fine for violating a particularly strange rule: putting a white strip of about three inches on his socks just above his cleats.
However, Porter - not one to be particularly quiet about any issues he has with superiors, teammates or the press - said he didn't receive a warning during the game, appealing the fine on these grounds.
He said: "You've got to tell me so I can fix it. You can't just fine me. You've got to give me a fix-it ticket. Even the police give you a fix-in ticket."
A recent Sports Illustrated poll named Joey Porter second in a list of the dirtiest players in the league, tied with Albert Haynesworth of the Washington Redskins but behind former teammate from the Pittsburgh Steelers Hines Ward.
