Socks come to the aid of amputees
Published: 25th November 2009
Amputees who get phantom pains from removed limbs may receive a lot of help from a new form of hosiery developed north of the border.
The Edinburgh Evening News revealed that the Astley Ainslie Hospital in Morningside has seen the development of special socks which led to 90 per cent of patients reporting a reduction in pain.
Phantom pain is when a missing limb continues to cause a level of discomfort for a patient despite there being nothing present to cause it, with the issue often linked to psychological hurdles following surgery.
The so-called Relax Night Socks were trialled in the hospital's Smart Centre and were seen to be both comfortable and easy to put on.
Prosthetist Elaine McCurrach of the organisation told the newspaper: "Some of our amputees have severe phantom pain, which can have a very negative effect on their quality of life.
"We are delighted to show that this product is an effective drug-free treatment for night-time phantom pain and to be able to make it available for all suitable patients."
The NHS notes that phantom limb issues may be the result of nerve endings in the stump sending abnormal nerve impulses that the brain understands to be pain.
