For women with men in their life who are little fashion-impaired and in need of some wardrobe help, one idea leaps out that is easy and relatively cheap.
Buy colourful socks. That is the advice of the Chicago Tribune's Ellen Warren, who claims thing's like striped socks can "add some zip" to a look.
"It's amazing the compliments that otherwise boring dressers will accumulate with that unexpected jolt of colour and pattern at the ankle," she explains.
She says this is one of the easiest ways of crawling out of "the antediluvian fashion swamp", adding that such items do not even need to be tried on first.
Her comments come after the Daily Mail's Catherine Hood advised ditching nylon in favour of cotton socks to avoid smelly feet.
