Women's underwear sales up
Published: 17th September 2010
Brits are shopping and spending more online, new figures show, as the internet retail sector saw double digit year-on-year growth in August.
Sales of women's underwear increased by nearly a third, with the lingerie sector seeing sales up by 29 per cent last month compared to August 2009, the latest IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index shows.
Socks may also have been bought in greater numbers, with the clothing, footwear and accessories sector as a whole growing by 24 per cent year-on-year.
Overall, Brits spent £4.4 billion online in August, up 15 per cent on the same month in 2009 and continuing the level of year-on-year growth seen throughout 2010.
IMRG director of information Tim Spooner commented: "With 31 million UK consumers now shopping online, the internet continues to be a lucrative channel for retailers that can adapt to shoppers’ changing behaviour during these uncertain times."
The news comes after analysis firm Verdict Research suggested that sales of clothing increased in June because of the hot weather.
