You would be wrong in thinking that white is established colour of cricket socks. It is actually cricket lilac that is the traditional colour of cricket socks. Why lilac? In an attempt to prevent foot rot, which was rife during World War One, soldiers covered their feet in antibacterial powder which subsequentially turned their socks a lilac colour.
After the war soldiers found their heavy weight army socks were perfect for cricket so began wearing these lilac coloured socks when playing. Manufacturers then started producing cricket socks in this lilac colour and this is now the time-honoured colour of cricket socks.
