Top 5 bank holiday UK beach breaks

Falmouth, Cornwall
Easily accessed by train, the charming old fishing port of Falmouth is one of the best places to experience that famous Cornish hospitality. The smart harbourside is home to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, while out of town sits Henry VIII’s huge Pendennis Castle on a rocky headland. If you’re looking to explore further afield, take the ferry across the Fal estuary to the cosy village of St Mawes.

Aberystwyth, Ceredigion
Sitting on the expansive Cardigan Bay, the remote market town of Aberystwyth is the perfect place to soak up all that brisk sea air, with ribbons of beach spreading northwards from the town centre. A surprisingly large student population provides a youthful buzz, while visitors should check out the Vale of Rheidol Railway, and take the short ride into the stunning Welsh countryside.

Portree, Isle of Skye
The picturesque Isle of Skye has been enchanting visitors through the ages and its capital, Portree, is the ideal base for exploring this beautiful island – as well as offering some magic of its own. Overlooking a sheltered bay, this fishing village is the beating heart of the island, with welcoming locals and cosy pubs that are perfect places to curl up after a day’s hiking around the island.

Ventnor, Isle of Wight
Clasped to the steep southern coast of the Isle of Wight, the resort of Ventnor was one of the Victorian era’s most famous health resorts, with its warm microclimate and lush botanic gardens. These days, the town still attracts visitors with its quaint esplanade and is well-positioned for those looking to explore the island’s other attractions, including the iconic lighthouse on The Needles.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire
On the wild North Yorkshire coast sits the Victorian resort of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, perhaps the best beach resort you’ve never heard of, but an excellent option for a weekend away. Apart from the popular sands, the main attractions are the town’s cliff tramway – which takes beachgoers up and down the grassy cliffs – and the pier that juts out into the rough and tumble of the North Sea surf.
