A pub in Sheffield has come under fire for kicking out a great-grandmother as she celebrated her 89th birthday on the premises.
Mrs Hilda Nelson was told to leave The Park Hotel in Hillsborough as she was wearing a knitted hat,
which contradicted the venue's strict no-hat policy.
The elderly woman wore the knitted beret to cover up her receding hairline, after she lost her hair due to a medical condition.
Mrs Nelson claimed that when she was first asked to remove the hat she thought they were joking.
"Apparently the pub doesn't like football fans wearing hats, because a hat gives a wrong impression, but we hardly looked like football fans or hooligans, we are all getting on a bit to put it mildly," she explained.
A spokesman for the pub, which is owned by the Mitchells and Butlers chain, has offered his sincere apologies to Mrs Nelson and her party for the handling of the situation and for the embarrassment caused.
