Internet retail hits high
Internet purchases are accounting to more of total retail sales than ever, new figures reveal.

In its monthly retail report that suggests Brits could be searching online for tights, socks and general legwear needs, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that internet purchases accounted for eight per cent of total retail sales.

Online retail was worth £446 million a week in July, up from £397 million in June and £325 million in July 2009.

Not since December 2009, when people looking for presents such as gift socks, was such a large amount spent via the internet.

The total non-store sector, which encompasses online, mail order and telephone sales, was up by 15.4 per cent on July 2009.

In general, confidence is returning to the UK retail sector, the Centre for Retail Research has said.
