Smuggler stopped at LAX with birds in socks
People are stopped travelling through customs for all manner of unusual reasons, but the means employed by one passenger to smuggle rare birds through Los Angeles LAX Airport last week has caused a pretty big stir.

US Fish and Wildlife officers found two exotic birds stuffed into socks that were taped to a woman bound for China.

In what may go down in history as one of the strangest uses of flight socks during a journey, one of the birds was strapped to the woman's chest, while the other was found attached to her leg.

Nico Melendez, spokesman for the Transport Security Administration, explained that the species of the birds was unknown. "It was just one of those weird things that happens at our checkpoints," he added.

Earlier this month, customs officials in Bulgaria uncovered more than 5,000 pairs of contraband men's socks at a checkpoint on the Turkish border, reports the Sofia News Agency.
