Socks block pipes, find engineers
The answer to where all those missing items of footwear go to might have finally been solved, after drainage engineers in the UK revealed the shocking truth about what lives in the nation's pipes.

Figures released by home emergency company HomeServe showed that engineers pulled more than 5,000 pairs of socks and pants from pipes last year, making these garments the fifth most common cause of blockages.

"You'd be surprised at some of the things I have found whilst servicing blocked pipes and drains over the years," said Steve Bailey, a HomeServe engineer working in Liverpool.

"I once discovered a quarter of a chicken stuck in the U-bend of a toilet causing it to overflow."

It follows reports in the Lynn News that a company in Norfolk is preparing to send men's socks to the military after winning a £1.6 million contract.
