Thousands of illegal socks detained in Bulgaria
Customs officials in Bulgaria have extended the long leg of the law to thousands of items of illicit foot wear, which were en route in a van travelling from Turkey to Poland.

Officers at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the Turkish border recovered 22 undeclared plastic bags containing a total of 5,280 pairs of men's socks - every one of them contraband, Sofia News Agency reports.

The smugglers are allegedly involved in the illegal traffic of autumn clothing, and the socks shipment is believed to have been a test to check how vigilant authorities are being during the height of summer holiday traffic.

According to a recent survey by HomeServe, more than 5,000 pairs of socks and pants were recovered from the UK's pipe systems last year, meaning there may be more than one way for hosiery to travel undetected.
