Jeggings to enter dictionary?
Jeggings have not only become a fashion hit for fans of funky legwear this year - they could be entered in the Oxford English Dictionary.

The word, a combination of jeans and leggings used to describe the skin-tight pants made of jean material, has been named the eighth top word of the year.

First in the list is simples, the catchphrase of Alexandr the meerkat from the Compare the Market adverts, with staycation, defriend and Tweetup also in the top ten.

The list of possible new entries to the dictionary is compiled at the end of each year and the suggestions often reflect world issues.

Social networking, the credit crunch and recession and new technologies have influenced many of the new words on the 2009 list.

Compilers from Oxford University Press will wait to see if the new phrases become permanent fixtures before they are added to the dictionary.

Wiki and meh have made it on to the dictionary's pages in previous years.
