South African Rolene Strauss has been named as the new Miss World.
The 22-year-old beat off challenges from Hungarian Edina Kulcsar, who came second, and American Elizabeth Safrit, who was third, seen here in a cowboy-style hat , to land the beauty queen title.
After Sunday's show at London's Excel Exhibition Centre, Ms Strauss claimed she would use her new status to increase understanding about how important education is in South Africa.
The medical student, who follows two previous South African winners of the crown, secured her victory before a worldwide television audience of an estimated one billion viewers.
Jacob Zuma, the South African president, said the nation was "very proud" of Ms Strauss, adding that her win was a reflection of her dedication and diligence.
Miss USA Elizabeth Safrit was another finalist to mix beauty with brains. She is a political science graduate who wants to be a broadcaster specialising in politics.
