Sock selection science for "foot-owners"
The foot is an incredible appendage and people should buy socks as carefully as they select their next pair of boots, an expert has urged.

Jan Adkins commented in an article for Mother Earth News that socks are a personal item of clothing, that they are "underwear that shows".

Socks can be serious or silly, thick or thin, pink or professional and can make the wearer feel good about pulling them on, he asserted.

There is also a greater science to the selection of socks than many people consider, Mr Adkins believes.

He opined: "The intelligent foot-owner will cover the extremity with a porous layer that can wick away some of the moisture ... insulate the nerve-dense foot against cold and heat and buffer the interface between foot and shoe."

It is not just Mr Adkins who has pondered the science of comfortably cladding the foot, whether in black socks, fun socks or tights.

Online footwear resource Sock Science reports that the secret of soothed feet lies in using yarns which keep the appendage dry and reduce the friction it is exposed to.
