NY shop owner 'socks it to 'em'

NY shop owner 'socks it to 'em'
Marty Rosen loves socks, just not those who buy them. The owner of a Manhattan sock shop says his title of the grumpiest sock man in New York City does not bother him, pointing out to the Daily News: "I have my moments".

Actress and sock lover Chloe Sevigny is just one of those to have Mr Rosen 'sock it to them' when browsing the New York store.

She says she "loves" the place but thinks the owner is "the grumpiest man on earth".

He doesn't blow the socks off his employees either - one says he eats their lunches and attempts to sell any personal items they leave in the shop.

Anyone out shopping for legwear to keep them warm in the current climate should opt for knee-high socks, suggests Jennifer Fong of Canwest.

They offer both form and function, she explains - keeping legs warm but also being fashionable.

Jennifer looks Super in leggings

Jennifer looks Super in leggings
Jennifer Hudson, a veteran of American Idol and Oscar winner for her part in Dreamgirls, performed the national anthem at the premier sporting event in the US, the Super Bowl, wearing leggings to devastating effect.

The singer, whose mother, brother and nephew were murdered last October, paired a military-style jacket, white flowing top and comfortable leggings as she belted out America's favourite song in front of over 70,000 fans at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Jennifer's booming vocals were enough to gain the attention of all people present in and around the stadium, if not her lovely legwear.

The game itself resulted in the sixth title for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who scored a touchdown with 35 seconds to go after slipping behind in the final quarter against Super Bowl debutantes the Arizona Cardinals, finishing 27-23.

Lily's love for legwear lives on

Lily's love for legwear lives on
Paparazzi beware: Lily Allen can make snowballs.

In yesterday's mad weather brought on by Russian snow clouds, Lily Allen dressed up in kind by donning a white Soviet-esque fur hat and a dangerously large black jacket before forming some snowballs to fling at dedicated snappers not put off by the cold.

Alongside her cold weather get-up, Lily was wearing in-vogue black opaque tights to keep herself warm against the elements and matching her fashionable dark UGG boots and shorts.

The rest of her morning was spent looking for ways to sledge down Primrose Hill, using a bin liner and a street sign in her need for speed.

Earlier this month, the cheeky singer sent a text of a topless photo to Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs, before quickly apologising as it was the "wrong Ricky" who received it.

Zero the Hero is all-American success

Zero the Hero is all-American success
Tights are mostly used as a fashion accessory but a group of teachers is going against the grain to deliver mathematical goodness to children on their 100th day of school.

Zero the Hero, the master of all numbers which end in zero, made an appearance across the country in both female and male forms, with most incarnations seeing sense and embracing the fashionable pair of tights as part of their overall get-up.

All numbers which were affected by zero were addressed, with many of the teachers trying their hardest to reinvent themselves to the point where they were not recognised, which a shiny pair of tights may have helped.

The maths community of the US is governed by the American Mathematical Association, which was founded in 1888.

Tights-wearing pigeon fancier caught out in Oz

Tights-wearing pigeon fancier caught out in Oz
A pigeon fancier with a difference has been caught out in Australia when trying to pass a pair of the birds off as part of his legs when waltzing through Melbourne airport.

The 23-year-old man, who has not been named, went one step too far when attempting to get back into his home country by hiding the pigeons in a pair of tights, using the legwear in one of the most unusual ways possible.

After a search, he was also found to have two bird eggs and a money belt containing plant seeds, contravening the strict policies in place in the island nation.

Commenting on the situation, customs spokesman Richard Janeczko said: "Wildlife smuggling is not only cruel to the animals involved, it poses a severe risk to the Australian environment and the health of the Australian community."

These rules are in place after the failed experiment to import the cane toad as a measure for pest control, with the amphibian now taking over large parts of the country.

Tights are accessory of choice for Adele

Tights are accessory of choice for Adele
Not content with her domination on the music world, British singer Adele is soon to feature in beauty bible Vogue.

Saying she feels most comfortable in a dress and tights, the 20-year-old pop princess seems overwhelmed by the attention she's getting from top designer Anna Wintour.

"I got a really nice dress", she tells reporters, adding that she tends to wear them "with tights and flat shoes and a cardigan".

The self-styled songstress claims she didn't have a clue how to respond when asked who her favourite designers were.

Adele, best-known for her hit single Chasing Pavements, will be appearing in the mag in the coming weeks, likening the experience to a scene from the hit film the Devil Wears Prada.

For now at least, the tights-loving chanteuse will be eagerly awaiting this Sunday's Grammy Awards, in which she is nominated in four categories, including best female pop vocal and best new artist.

Stockings are super for little and large stars

Stockings are super for little and large stars
Strictly Come Dancing has hit the live stage, yet all the hard work of the show's producers were undone after a snapper got hold of a picture of a certain two stars showing their little and large qualities.

Ex-supermodel Jodie Kidd was spotted next to former singer with S Club 7 Rachel Stevens, with the pair's 13-inch height difference being more obvious than one may expect, the Daily Mail stated.

The pair, who were wearing wonderful fishnet stockings with their similarly-designed dresses, were snapped at Manchester's MEN Arena between dances and showed good reason for them to be kept apart, with Rachel made to look like a pixie in comparison to Jodie, who is 6ft 2in.

Last year, Jodie took part in Who Do You Think You Are?, finding that her great-grandfather was Lord Beaverbrook.

Everton fans sock it to their team

Everton fans sock it to their team
Football matches are perhaps no stranger to strange goings-on and Wednesday night's game between Liverpool and Everton was no exception as socks rained down on the stadium.

No, it is not another freakish turn for the British weather, but a protest against Everton's proposed move to Kirkby.

When the match reached half-time, fans threw pairs of rolled-up socks on to the pitch, thought to be a reference to people from Kirkby being known as sock-robbers.

"I was wearing three pairs last night, so I was well prepared," one football fan told the Liverpool Echo.

Jennifer Fong, writing for Canwest, said in recent weeks that layering-up socks is one way to keep extra warm throughout the cold weather.

She claimed that adding layers of clothes can also help keep out the chill, which may be useful as the Met Office predicts that the weather will stay much the same over the coming days.

Brits turn up in force to pre-Grammy performance - with legwear in tow
As a warm-up for the Grammys last night, a number of stars made the trek to Beverly Hills to make their mark, with a number of them obviously having a great dress sense.

Despite Whitney Houston's comeback performance stealing a lot of the limelight on the evening, it was perhaps the British contingent who showed their fashion prowess by donning leggings and tights as part of their evening ensembles, according to the Daily Mail.

Estelle, who dominated the charts last year after a collaboration with Kanye West on top tune American Boy, turned up in wet-look leggings, while X Factor champ Leona Lewis went with the staple of nearly-opaque black tights.

A whopping 15 awards were won by Brits at the Grammys last night, with Led Zeppelin front-man Robert Plant scooping five on his own.

Where have all of his socks gone?

Where have all of his socks gone?
Tony Gabriele faces a major problem. He has 24 "single, unmatched, orphaned socks" and he has no idea where their brothers and sisters have gone.

In his Get Serious! column on the Detroit Daily Press, Mr Gabriele formulates a number of reasons as to why this strange occurrence happens.

He notes it could be the dastardly work of the washing machine's cousin, the dryer, which may be the problem; after all, not many people do a sock count between the two.

A secret chemical compound could be injected into the sock during creation, Mr Gabriele reasons, noting that they could self-destruct after a number of washes.

Or, of course, they could run away, having had enough of a life confined to wrapping itself around a smelly foot.

Mr Gabriele concluded: "I will be happy to investigate all these possibilities, if I can get a government grant. Possibly from the Department of Homeland Sockurity."

Last month, it was revealed that New York's grumpiest salesman was a sock aficionado, with actress Chloe Sevigny being a recipient of his foul mood when she was looking for legwear.

Fashionista in stockings at 62

Fashionista in stockings at 62
Stockings are a timeless creation that seemingly knows no boundaries for the age of the wearer, if the latest shoot involving a leading fashion designer is to be believed.

Diane von Furstenberg, the Belgium-born style guru known for her hallmark wrap dress, posed on the front cover of Purple Fashion Magazine at the age of 62, showing her graceful ageing in a leggy pose involving a cracking pair of stockings.

She said of the experience: "How embarrassing at my age to be in fishnet stockings on the cover of a hip young magazine. I was seduced into a day with Terry Richardson, it was a lot of fun!"

Last month, it was reported that Diane is to stage a fashion show especially for holders of American Express credit cards.

An actress known for her role in Coronation Street has showed her seductive side in a new photoshoot for Closer magazine, using legwear to the best effect possible.

Girl guides to collect 300ft of socks

Girl guides to collect 300ft of socks
As part of an initiative which will incorporate over half a million Girl Guides across the country, Midsomer Norton's finest are to help people around the world by collecting 300ft worth of socks.

The 21 girls are to set up collection points for hosiery across the local area, asking people to help them by donating legwear in new or good condition as part of the Changing the World project for Girlguiding UK.

The guides' leader Sue Bendall told This is Somerset that the girls' drive for socks has shown their commitment to making the world a better place through their local initiative.

She added: "This is such an important issue and has given them the perfect opportunity to shout out about something that they care about and to show the difference that our members can make to the world around them."

The sister of Robert Baden-Powell, Agness, led the first group of Girl Guides in 1910, three years after her sibling established the Boy Scouts.

Walliams and girlfriend dress up to impress

Walliams and girlfriend dress up to impress
Funnyman David Walliams was an officer and a gentleman for the night when he stepped out for Natalie Imbruglia's 34th birthday party in the desired fancy dress.

Despite his white uniform, it was his girlfriend's choice of outfit which stole the show as she followed her love hand-in-hand.

Model Lauren Budd, who is 19 years younger than David at the tender age of 18, dressed as a sexy policewoman to the bash at Kensington Roof Gardens, wearing shiny black leggings to the delight of snapping paparazzi.

Her choice of legwear highlights a popular look which has been recently mirrored by other stars such as Peaches Geldof, Coleen McLoughlin and Lindsay Lohan.

Loud leggings are also popular this season, states Look magazine's Sinead O'Donoghue.

American Airlines prioritises socks

American Airlines prioritises socks
Plane operator American Airlines obviously has its priorities right after it announced the launch of its new in-flight amenity kits, including lovely legwear.

The company stated that alongside larger-sized cosmetic products, lip balm, better quality toothbrushes and Colgate toothpaste, it would be making its socks thicker and more comfortable.

Lauri Curtis, the vice-president of onboard services at American Airlines, said the company constantly looked to better ways to improve its facilities and the new kits will be rolled out this week, socks included.

She continued: "The redesigned amenity kit, thanks to input from our customers and flight attendants, includes premium products our customers value, like Burt's Bees, which more closely meet their needs."

Each day, American Airlines transports 270,000 passengers, receives over 239,000 reservations calls and charters around 3,300 flights.

15 months for socking it to worker

15 months for socking it to worker
A man who shocked a criminal justice worker in Falkirk has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after causing a strange fracas in the town's social work department, the Daily Record has reported.

Darren Wallace, a 22-year-old from Carronshore, pleaded guilty to Falkirk sheriff court after he threw a pair of his socks at the woman and demanded she wash them after he unsuccessfully demanded a glass of water by banging on a glass window inside the council offices.

The bizarre attack culminated in the man dropping his trousers in defiance against the injustice he perceived, although this was swiftly dealt with by the court.

Sheriff Graeme Warner said at the legwear-led trial: "Your behaviour - and I'm sure you do not need me to tell you this - is just utterly unacceptable."

Last week, Tony Gabriele of the Detroit Daily Press launched an inquiry into his disappearing socks, attributing the losses to aliens, the government and self-aware hosiery.

Tights are 'wonderfully vogue' with shorts

Tights are 'wonderfully vogue' with shorts
As far as extraordinary sights go, shorts in the cold winter temperatures may seem like a silly thing to wear. Not so, says one fashionista - so long as they are paired with tights, all is well with the world.

Morgan Schimminger, writing for Los Angeles' Up and Coming Fashion Trends Examiner, stated that nylon opaque black tights continued to look brilliant with a lot of things and were earmarked as an autumn trend in Vogue magazine, surviving through to the end of winter.

However, the style guru finds she cannot feel comfy in choosing legwear in the winter, stating that they seem to be for thin legs only.

She continued: "I wonder if there's a way to get fitted for stockings like experts measure you at a bra fitting. If the tights fit more like a glove, maybe they'd feel more appropriate as a winter accomplice."

Last week, one of the major faces of fashion Diane von Furstenberg appeared on Purple Fashion Magazine's front cover to prove that at age 62, legwear could be for anyone.

Toe socks 'help fight for freedom'

Toe socks 'help fight for freedom'
Deb Egenberger hates shoes. She dislikes them to such an extent that she would go without such footwear for the rest of her life, although that's not to say she dislikes all things for her feet.

The reporter, speaking to the Gothenburg Times, spoke of her love for toe socks and the freedom they give her toes, describing her delight with the popular type of hosiery as an "obsession".

She compared her desire for the legwear with her preference for gloves over mittens as they allow individual movement of each digit, with toe socks even making it feel like her feet are bare.

Ms Egenberger added: "At the same time, during cold weather I find that toe socks keep my feet warmer than the traditional style, kind of like giving each digit its own little sleeping bag."

According to Foot Healthcare, toe socks allow each individual toe to exercise, not squashing them together and restricting their movement like regular incarnations.

'Not everyone' looks good in leggings

'Not everyone' looks good in leggings
A pseudo-famous member of the last I'm A Celebrity crowd has showed that stars don't always have the habit of getting their choice of legwear right, according to a news provider.

FemaleFirst was quick to jump on the back of Nicola McLean, who turned up to the red carpet of Confessions of a Shopaholic wearing black leggings with huge boots and a black t-shirt.

The critic continued: "The PVC knee highs look like a cross between a pantomime star and a lap dancer's footwear of choice."

Nicola's leggings were the "major fashion no-no" of the night, however, as "leggings should only be worn with a long top covering the crotch area" and not leaving very little to the imagination as the model did.

Joe Swash was the eventual winner of the most recent series of I'm a Celebrity, with Nicola McLean - famous for being the fiancee of Peterborough United footballer Tom Williams - finishing sixth.

Coloured tights and sandals 'wholly wrong'

Coloured tights and sandals 'wholly wrong'
People wanting to look great during the winter months could do much better than dressing up in coloured tights with sandals or open-toed shoes, it has been stated.

Margie Boule, a community columnist on Oregon Live, quoted a recent survey made by 99Polls.com which found that only four per cent of respondents thought the look was a successful one.

She said that some "deep-thinking fashion anthropologist" may parallel the look of run-resistant tights with a pragmatic reaction to the economy, or even the choice of bright colours with the need to "combat a dreary reality".

However, Ms Boule continued: "It's also entirely possible that the trend of coloured tights with sandals was triggered after somebody somewhere dressed in the dark.

"Fashion chaos theory needs no butterflies."

Another bad way to use tights is in smuggling, as a 23-year-old man found after he was caught attempting to get back into Australia carrying two live pigeons between his legs and stockings.

Katy Perry shows more love for legwear

Katy Perry shows more love for legwear
Katy Perry, the pop diva who broke through this year, did her trademark entrance to the Brit Awards - wearing another crazy outfit.

The singer is well known for her eclectic dress sense and proved it this week in London, when she paired a glittery rock chick top emblazoned with Hello Kitty motifs with black PVC leggings, dressing to truly impress the assembled paparazzi at the country's biggest music event.

If that was not enough, Katy stuck to the legwear during her performance, where she wore a medical-style white jacket with a sexy pair of fishnet stockings.

The night was not all great for Katy though, who was struck by illness shortly after receiving her award for best international female solo artist, leaving the awards to be sick and texting celebrity blogger Perez Hilton with the gaudy details.

Von Furstenberg follows up front cover legwear loving
Fashionista Diane von Furstenberg, who recently highlighted her love for legwear with a stockings-based shoot for Purple Fashion Magazine, has kitted-out her models in hosiery for a new catwalk show.

Attending New York Fashion Week this month, the designer combined "fanciful headgear", tribal-printed clothing and long t-shirts with tights and three-quarter length leggings, according to FemaleFirst.

The news provider seemed quite happy at this legwear change, stating that it was "finally waving goodbye to the wet look fashion we've been used to for the past year".

It was added that her embrace with knitwear was also pleasing, with long scarves proving to be all the rage at the moment.

Diane von Furstenberg's appearance on the cover of Purple Fashion Magazine showed that stockings are a timeless look, with the fashion designer stating that she was "seduced into a day with Terry Richardson", adding that "it was a lot of fun".

R.I.P. Socks

R.I.P. Socks
Many people think hosiery will live forever. Sadly, Socks does not, as it has been announced that the cat famous for his tenancy at the White House has passed away.

Gracing the national and international stage for 19 years, Socks the cat was Clinton's pet while Bill fulfilled his role as Mr President between 1993 and 2001.

He was first part of the Clinton administration during Bill's tenure as governor of Arkansas in 1993, with the kitty adopted for his daughter Chelsea.

Socks was one of two pets owned by the Clintons, with Buddy the Labrador retriever joining the First Cat in 1997.

Bill Clinton continues to chip in on international and domestic affairs in the US, recently backing President Obama's decision to inject a financial stimulus into the American economy.

Mateless socks are 'great for recycling'

Mateless socks are 'great for recycling'
Being environmentally-friendly and fun is easy for Lenore MacLeod-Bickley, who has used orphan socks to make her plant pots look fantastic.

Writing for eco-happy website Crafting a Green World, the hosiery fan shows everyone that a sock can be pulled over a flowerpot, cut to size and then given a shrub to hold, making sure that people finding it hard to part with their socks can still see them every single day.

Lenore continued: "They also work with jars and pots of various sizes, since the socks have a little bit of a stretch to them.

"This is a great recycling project that is fun and easy, and gives those mateless socks a second chance."

However, Tony Gabriele of the Detroit Daily Press no doubt still has his suspicions about where his single socks go, with the columnist already formulating theories that single socks are making a personal bid for freedom or that his dryer is really to blame.

Sweaty feet 'need surplus of cotton socks'

Sweaty feet 'need surplus of cotton socks'
People with sweaty feet problems should not fear - it is a situation which affects millions.

Speaking to leading Far Eastern news resource China View, Dr Li Yongmei, the chief physician at Longhua Hospital in Shanghai, has recommended the use of cotton socks as a way to stem problems relating to poor foot hygiene.

He said that "sweaty feet can easily lead to eczema if there are also unhealthy habits such as not washing regularly or changing socks often enough".

Dr Li added: "To cope with sweaty feet, ventilated shoes and pure cotton socks are a must."

If eczema develops, he notes, people should also boil their socks before hanging them up to dry.

According to Foot Care Expert, a person should always clean troublesome feet with fresh water, preferably with a shower nozzle and not in the bath as it washes away infection.

Ripped legwear is 'meteoric in popularity'
Caution, legwear fans: you may have to rip it up and start again with your beloved hosiery in your quest to follow the stars.

Elle magazine, seen as a Bible for many fashionistas, highlighted the wondrous trend in tights exhibited by leading actresses such as Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Olsen and Mischa Barton.

Laurelle Gilbert, writing for the stylish publication, said: "The A-list's most rebellious girls are channelling their inner bad girl this week in ripped tights and leggings.

"The look is easy to crib, just take a pair of opaque tights and let rip."

Last month, singing sensation Miley Cyrus was seen strolling around Hollywood with her friends wearing ripped tights, revisiting a popular trend from the 1980s with her ensemble.

It added: "But for this season at least, we have to contend with the news that they will be hitting the high street, they will be championed as fashionable and yes, there will be old grannies trying them on trying to look cool."

Earlier this month, FemaleFirst spoke of the special combination of short lace dresses with wet-look leggings this season.

Footballer gives insight into socks superstition

Footballer gives insight into socks superstition
A popular footballer from the lower leagues has told the BBC in his weekly blog about the many superstitions he has seen during his career, with the player himself being susceptible to a worry or two.

Gavin Strachan, the son of Celtic manager Gordon Strachan and currently playing in midfield for Notts County, said he turns into a "gibbering wreck" if there aren't any beans left for him for his pre-game toasty meal.

Despite this, current team-mate Kevin Pilkington is "consumed" by his socks-based superstitions, particularly during his time at rival club Mansfield.

Gavin said: "This behaviour continued on the day of the game. He had to wear the same pants and the same socks, with the left sock always going on before the right one. We are assuming they got washed!"

Another foot-based superstition is that of Hartlepool United's Michael Nelson, who Strachan says files his feet in an irritating way before each game.

Gavin's father, Gordon, currently has Celtic on par with Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League in another close-fought contest between the two Glaswegian clubs.
