Try plaid with neutral tights, one expert says

Try plaid with neutral tights, one expert says
Those looking to debut an edgy style this season should opt for plaid, one writer has said.

One expert on the Daily News Journal has said that there is a type of plaid to suit everyone as long as they keep it to one item, pairing it with neutral tights or leggings.

Traditionalists may prefer multicoloured tartan, continue the article, although for something more daring they should try two-tone ginghams.

However, warns the author, plaid trousers should be avoided unless golfing.

"The bold pattern will make even the thinnest person look thicker if you dress yourself in the print from ankle to hip," they add.

This comes as one expert has said that make-up will be playful this spring, a trend that could possibly extend to footwear.

Zara Rabinowicz, editor of Kiss & Makeup has said that a toned down neon lip and return to pastels will be the defining trend for the spring.

Women may opt for leg wear in the style of their grandmothers, according to one writer.

The Daily Mail has reported that the rise of "Granny Chic" has seen young and stylish women turn to mid-length skirts, heavy cardigans and flesh coloured tights, with some even opting to dye their hair grey.

On-trend individuals are also opting for low heeled shoes to pair with their tights, according to the report, with sales of the granny-favourite rising by 62 per cent at the department store.

This comes after one expert wrote on the Daily News Journal that those looking for an edgy look should try neutral tights with plaid.

Tights 'make a statement'

Tights 'make a statement'
Leg wear does not just keep women warm in winter, one expert has said. With exciting new colours and styles allowing tights a renaissance, they are also a statement piece that says a lot about the wearer.

One expert writes in the Wall Street Journal that whatever the style, there is hosiery to complement it.

However, with eclectic styles and funky colours taking over the high street, there is a danger of ruining entire ensembles by making the wrong choice.

Sarah Whittaker, a Savannah, Ga, image consultant, tells the newspaper that women need to be especially careful in the workplace.

"You may think it's just a pair of red tights," she says, "but actually, it can make a big difference" in how people perceive you.

This comes after the Daily Mail reported that young women are turning to the older generations for fashion inspiration, wearing nude tights and clothes that look like something a grandmother would usually wear.

Thirty-four per cent of men 'have hosiery habit'

Thirty-four per cent of men 'have hosiery habit'
Thirty-four per cent of men wear tights under their suit to the office, according to new research.

According to the Men in Tights survey by website Tightsplease, 15 per cent of women said they did not like the idea of their man wearing tights but 48 per cent said they love shopping for the legwear with their partner.

Additionally, 58 per cent of tight-wearing men said they do not like to tell friends or colleagues about their hosiery habit.

The website reports that one man said: "Many men wear tights in secret - partners are seldom aware, I managed to hide it for 15 years."

Meanwhile, one writer for the Wall Street Journal said that tights are not just for keeping warm in winter - with funky colours and patterns dominating the high street, they can now be a statement piece.

However, added the writer, women should be careful that they do not get it wrong in the office, as out-there tights could make a big difference to how people perceive women.

Kate Moss 'bucks own trend by going out in tights'

Kate Moss 'bucks own trend by going out in tights'
The leg wear trend has now reached such heights that even supermodel Kate Moss, famed for shunning such items in favour of bare legs, has converted to wearing tights.

According to Now magazine, Moss usually opts to go without legwear, whatever the weather.

However, the star has been snapped out on the town with fiancée Jamie Hince in a black dress with tights and camel overcoat, accessorising with shades as well as a black trilby.

In addition, during fashion week in Paris, Kate was seen wearing black tights under shorts, with high black boots, and a black blazer.

Emily Blunt also opted for the black tight trend recently, pairing the legwear with a long sleeved white smock dress at the Gnomeo and Juliet premiere.

Onlookers were also stunned to see that the actress had ditched her trademark brunette locks for a lighter look.

New Zealand knitters 'create socks of all shapes and sizes'

Soldier's mum 'collects socks for troops'

Soldier's mum 'collects socks for troops'
One mother from Florida is collecting foot wear for her son and his fellow troops in Afghanistan, according to a report.

Barb Vurnakes of Ocala began collecting new men's tube socks after her son informed her of the need for them by troops overseas, reports Ocala.com.

The collection of socks will be sent to her son's Marine platoon after its troops are deployed to Afghanistan in the next few weeks.

"I did not know how important troops' feet are when they are on assignment and unable to bathe for days at a time or wash clothes," she told the news site.

"They will need lots of socks because they will go through as many as three pairs a day and may have to discard them."

Meanwhile, the LosAltosPatch reports that a group of women have been crafting sock monkeys for children at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford for over thirty years now, producing a total of more than 5,000.

Dame Helen Mirren 'loves darning husband's socks'

Dame Helen Mirren 'loves darning husband's socks'
Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren has claimed to be one of the most frugal women in Hollywood, admitting that she loves nothing better than darning her husband's socks.

The Daily Express quotes the actress as saying: "I love darning. I darn my husband's socks. I love it when he says, 'I have a hole in my sock' or 'I have a rip in my trousers. Can you mend it?'"

Continuing with the money-saving tips, the 65-year-old added that she loves a bargain and buys clothes with up to 70 per cent off.

In addition, the newspaper reports that she often wears fake jewels as everyone just assumes they are real.

Dame Helen may have got the right idea, after new research by laundry specialists Dr Beckman found that missing socks result in unnecessary expense for households.

It was found that footwear lost in the laundry costs British households a massive £240 per year.

Men's funky footwear 'the new tie'

Men's funky footwear 'the new tie'
One Canadian man has taken to designing funky foot wear especially for men, it has been revealed.

Edward Nagy, who works at Health Canada by day, has created a bold line of men's socks in a market that rarely deviates from black, brown and grey, reports the Vancouver Sun.

Nagy draws designs on a piece of paper and sends it off to be digitized in Turkey, where a sample sock is produced. If he likes the look of the footwear, he places an order.

"The sock is the new tie," he told the newspaper. "The difference is, you don't need a tie, but you have to have socks. If you can have a bit of fun or express yourself through your socks, that's wonderful."

This comes after the Express reported that Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren confessed she loves nothing better than darning her husband's socks.

She added that she loves a bargain and often buys clothes in the sale and fake jewels, as everyone assumes they are real.

Pregnant women 'should wear comfy flats with socks'

Pregnant women 'should wear comfy flats with socks'
Pregnant women should wear maxi dresses when pregnant for a comfortable but chic look, one expert has said.

Angela Barnard, founder of My London Stylist, said that wearing a maxi dress allows women to opt for comfy flats and socks.

"A heavily-pregnant woman waddling around in killer heels is not a good look," she added.

For those shopping on a budget, Ms Barnard suggests buying oversized non-maternity items such as long vests and oversized shirts.

In addition, she maintains that pregnant women should make the most of the "glow" that is common during that phase of life, saying that heavy foundation can be swapped for a tinted moisturiser.

You may also find your hair feels thicker and gets more glossy, so experiment with new ways to wear your hair," she adds.

In other style news, the Daily Mail has reported that young women are opting to model themselves on their grandmothers, with many choosing mid-length skirts, heavy cardigans and flesh-coloured tights.

Ladylike classics 'will be big in autumn'

Ladylike classics 'will be big in autumn'
Next autumn and winter will feature ladylike, classic styles, one expert has said, with colours such as chocolate, navy and charcoal taking over the high street. It is likely this classic style will extend to footwear, with many women opting for classic socks and tights.

Sairey Stemp, fashion editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine, has said that there will be a lot of tweed textures and feminine suits, accompanied by bright dashes of colour such as scarlet.

"Also, classic staples like the trench coat and trouser suit should feature heavily in collections," she added.

This comes ahead of New York fashion week, which will take place from February 10th to the 17th. Despite the fact that spring has not even begun yet, the high-profile event will look ahead to the designer's autumn/winter 2011-12 collections.

Meanwhile, supermodel Kate Moss has been spotted stepping out in tights, despite usually shunning stockings in favour of bare legs.

Wear socks over shoes to avoid slipping, expert says

Wear socks over shoes to avoid slipping, expert says
Those still experiencing difficult weather conditions such as ice and snow should try an innovative approach to safety, one expert has said.

Jack Beever, 75, of Dupo, advises that people worried about slipping on the ice should don wool socks over shoes, reports BND.com

He added that other socks work too, but wool footwear should be used for optimum effect as the material is "almost like Velcro".

Additionally, he continued, socks will get dirty, wear out quickly and people may look at wearers strangely but it is a small price to pay to prevent a serious accident.

Mr Beever said that he first heard of the method about 50 years ago, but cannot remember who told him.

However, men who are opting for funky footwear may want to avoid wearing these trendy socks over their shoes.

Edward Nagy, who has created a bold line of men's socks, has said that brightly patterned footwear for men is "the new tie".

Drop drab legwear in favour of bold and brash tights

Drop drab legwear in favour of bold and brash tights
Bold and brash is definitely in vogue this season when it comes to leg wear.

Black opaque tights should be cast aside in favour of patterned stockings, which are considered less novelty socks and more high-end fashion these days, according to Elle.

In a recent feature, the magazine features a range of patterned tights modelled as part of a number of different outfits, which will no doubt provide those bored with their current legwear range with some inspiration.

Elle advises fashionistas to "take your style cues from the street" by complementing bold tights with affordable accessories, shorts and statement footwear.

Recently, the Daily Mail urged women not to be afraid of adopting the emerging "Granny Chic".

The look is characterised by the combination of flesh-coloured tights with mid-length skirts and heavy cardigans, which is now cool for young and stylish women as well as grandmothers.

Sales of these items have apparently sky rocketed across department stores, underlining the popularity of this unusual look.

Sock choice 'key' to giving the right impression

Sock choice 'key' to giving the right impression
Accessories, mobile phones and choice of clothes are all key to creating the right impression, according to a leading fashion expert.

Speaking to Daily News and Analysis, Zulfi Syed underlines the importance of choosing the right coloured, patterned socks and stockings to match an outfit.

She suggests dressing in light colours during the day, such as light blues and greens.

The most important thing though, she tells the newspaper, is to ensure that socks reflect the kind of person you are.

Fun socks that look good on your friends may not be as appropriate as a pair of sophisticated patterned socks on you, if it better suits your character.

Sometimes though, comfort takes precedence over style.

My London Stylist founder Angela Barnard recently noted that wearing a maxi dress enables pregnant women to make the most of style and comfort, by allowing them to combine comfy socks with comfy flat footwear.

Spring/summer tight styles will be 'bright and breezy

Spring/summer tight styles will be 'bright and breezy
Lingerie fashion is expected to look bright and fresh for the spring/summer 2011 season, with detail featuring across cut lace styles.

In contrast to the heavily patterned and dark tights seen in the winter, the next few months will feature pale hues that are "clean, fresh, bright and breezy", according to OSOYOU.COM.

However, burlesque tight styles are expected to make their comeback in the autumn and winter market place, although the story will be slightly different when it comes to evening wear.

The website's fashion writer, Kate Williams, explained: "For evening wear, quirky printed tights definitely still have their place within the market."

Earlier this month, Cosmopolitan Magazine predicted that classic colours such as navy, charcoal and bright scarlet will make a comeback in autumn.

Tweed textures and fitted skirt suits are also expected to prove popular, while staples like the trench coat will remain a favourite among fashion designers.

Marc Jacobs releases 60s-influenced Autumn 2011 Collection

Marc Jacobs releases 60s-influenced Autumn 2011 Collection
The Marc Jacobs Autumn runway collection sets a precedent for browns and deep reds to make an appearance in wardrobes this year.

Ankle boots will also necessitate a shift in legwear for many women, who will no doubt consider investing in some longer, thicker socks to pair with their outfits to emulate the Marc Jacobs autumnal look.

Wool socks could be the order of the day, with heavy boots and formal shoes featuring in this latest collection.

WGSN notes that the collection is heavily influenced by retro looks from the 40s and 60s.

The collection also heavily emphasises strong boy-girl styling, which will no doubt reflect in shoe choice and legwear.

Meanwhile, Elle magazine has recommended that women opt for bold and brash tights this spring season.

Patterned stockings are expected to replace the more common black opaque tights, according to the publication.

Socks set to show off bare legs this summer?

Socks set to show off bare legs this summer?
Bare legs and short skater skirts will be popular among fashionistas during the spring and summer season, it has been claimed.

This fresh and bright aesthetic will also be reflected in people's choice of fashion socks, according to OSOYOU.com.

The website's fashion writer, Kate Williams, explained: "Spring/summer 2011 will continue with a clean, fresh bright aesthetic, so although bare legs will be in abundance, pale, neutral tones in lace patterns will work well.

"Both ankle and knee-length socks worn with bare legs and short skater skirts will be a great on-trend preppy look."

However, the fashion tone looks set to get a lot more serious in the autumn and winter, as reflected in the recently released Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2011 collection.

The clothing line is heavily influenced by 40s and 60s retro looks, with strong "boy-girl styling", according to WGSN.

The fashion trend analysis firm expects this 40s retro theme to make a particularly strong showing during New York Fashion Week.

Lady Gaga forgets clothes, shows off tights instead

Lady Gaga forgets clothes, shows off tights instead
Style icon Lady Gaga loves her leg wear so much that she stepped out wearing almost nothing else in New York.

The notoriously outlandish dresser donned just a black bra and tights for a trip to the recording studio, pairing the barely-there outfit with a grey jacket, cowboy boots and beret.

Gaga also wore dark fingerless leather gloves and sunglasses, with black lipstick completing the moody ensemble.

However, critics have commented that this outfit is relatively normal for the controversial singer, who seems to be on a mission to redefine the rules of style.

Meanwhile, Elle magazine is urging women to drop the drab black tights in favour of bold, patterned legwear.

In a recent feature, the fashion publication featured a range of patterned tights, no doubt inspiring those who have long wanted to ditch the wardrobe staple in favour of a more edgy look.

Brighten winter wardrobe with floral print tights, expert says

Brighten winter wardrobe with floral print tights, expert says
Floral print leg wear is no longer reserved for the spring and summer, with a number of designers launching such items this winter.

One expert on the Globe and Mail writes how women can rock floral print tights when it's cold outside.

Tiyana Grulovic advised that women dress up their tights with a prim button-up shirt and structured bag, which will make the ensemble appear more "grown up".

However, those opting for floral print tights should stay away from empire-waist clothing as this will have the opposite effect and could leave individuals looking like oversized children.

Additionally, the writer maintains that black high-heeled shoes can add polish to the look, though emphasises the importance of ensuring the footwear colour is picked out elsewhere in the outfit.

Meanwhile, one expert has said that women may choose socks over tights this summer, to show off bare legs.

Kate Williams, fashion writer on OSOYOU.com, added: "Spring/summer 2011 will continue with a clean, fresh bright aesthetic, so although bare legs will be in abundance, pale, neutral tones in lace patterns will work well."

Alexa Chung dons leggings during London Fashion Week

Alexa Chung dons leggings during London Fashion Week
London Fashion Week has been alive with fresh new looks and exciting combinations, but few donning the "casual-chic" look pulled it off as well as Alexa Chung.

The TV presenter looked demure and relaxed in her black leggings and matching lace-up booties.

No stranger to being in the public eye, Chung thoughtfully paired her legwear with a striped sweater dress and beige trench coat.

Tights were all on show when Lady Gaga stepped out in New York earlier this week.

The singer's look was perhaps a little more outlandish than Chung's choice of clothes, though.

Gaga's tights were paired with a pair of knee-high cowboy boots, a lank grey jacket and not much else - unless you count her biker gloves, bra and beret.

The back of the jacket was emblazoned with the words from her hit song Born This Way.

Opaque tights 'trendy among teens'

Opaque tights 'trendy among teens'
Opaque leg wear is becoming a hit among teens, according to one young writer.

Caroline Grew, of Trumbull High School, writes on ctpost.com that the great thing about opaque tights is that everyone can have their own unique twist.

One of the biggest trends to emerge from the tights phenomenon among teens is wearing a simple shirt dress with brightly coloured tights, she claimed.

However, those who feel that bright tights are not for them, can work black opaque tights as they "dress up anything you put on".

According to Ms Grew, in spring the winter's navy and violet should be replaced by brighter colours such as yellow or green.

She added that while leggings may be comfortable for lounging around the house, they will not make any outfits look "fabulous".

This comes after Alexa Chung chose to wear leggings during London Fashion Week, pairing the legwear with a striped sweater dress and beige trench coat.

Personalised socks would make a great gift, indicates one expert

Personalised socks would make a great gift, indicates one expert
Personalisation can be added to all sorts of gifts to make the recipient feel extra special, one expert has said.

A spokeswoman for findmeagift.co.uk has said that for a more heartfelt, unique present, people should personalise their gifts. She added that this could be done to all sorts of gifts, no doubt including socks.

"They are becoming increasingly sought after for all occasions whether it is for birthdays, Christmas or Valentine's Day and make a lasting memento of that day which can be treasured forever," she continued.

Summer will be a great time to buy socks as gifts, with one expert claiming that more women will don the footwear to show off their bare legs during the season.

Kate Williams, fashion writer on OSOYOU.com, said that spring and summer will enjoy a clean, fresh and bright aesthetic and so although many women will be wearing socks, tight in pale and neutral colours will also work well.

Abigail Breslin looked edgy in tights at Rango photo call
Teenage actress Abigail Breslin looked trendy at a photo call for new film Rango, pairing an edgy ensemble with killer heels to great effect.

According to the Daily Mail, the 14-year-old Little Miss Sunshine star paired a black top with gold studs and black tights with a knee length beige skirt, bringing the outfit together with a chunky black belt with a large buckle.

The animated film about a chameleon on a journey to become a hero also stars Jonny Depp as the voice of Rango, Isla Fisher and Timothy Olyphant.

Madonna rocks Oscars after-party in fishnet tights

Madonna rocks Oscars after-party in fishnet tights
Last night's Oscars gave the stars an opportunity to show off some funky leg wear, and perhaps unsurprisingly Madonna did not disappoint.

Attending the after-party with her daughter Lourdes, the pop queen wore a racy thigh-skimming sheer dress paired with fishnet tights, together with a fake-fur body warmer.

Meanwhile, Lourdes went without hosiery and dressed somewhat more conservatively than her mother in a patterned print dress and bare legs.

New Catwoman Anne Hathaway attended the pre-Oscar dinner last week in a white ruffled blouse and Swiss dotted tights.

There was plenty of Black Swan influence at the Oscars after-party too, with multiple reports of ladies wearing black tutus and matching tights to achieve Natalie Portman's famous look.

Natalie Portman walked away with the award for Best Actress for her performance in Darren Aronofsky's film, attending the ceremony in a gorgeous purple dress, while co-star Mila Kunis went for a lilac ruffled Elie Saab frock.
