It seems mismatched or brightly coloured socks are no longer confined to students.
Former US president George H W Bush has a well known love of statement socks and is spreading it to his friends by offering them as gifts.
Speaking to Click2houston.com, Jean Becker, his long-time chief of staff explained that the former president used to offer a pair of cufflinks to important visitors to his west Houston office, but now a gift of lobster socks is more likely.
"This is his signature gift. He's sort of becoming famous for his socks," he explained.
"He used to wear them on special occasions and not very often," Mr Becker told the source. "But he has lately gotten more outrageous. Now he goes out of his way."
Hunter Walk, a director of product management at YouTube, told MB.com that loud or colourful socks were also popular among IT professionals as a kind of "secret handshake".
