Tim looks to make heroes out of Villans

Tim looks to make heroes out of Villans

Aston Villa's new manager says his relegation-threatened players can turn around their season if they lose their "fear factor".

Tim Sherwood was speaking on Monday after being appointed to succeed Paul Lambert as the Villans' boss.

Sporting a natty claret and blue Villa men's scarf , Sherwood took his first press conference with the Birmingham-based side languishing in the Premiership's bottom three.

But Sunday's FA Cup win over Leicester leaves the club in the all-important draw for the last eight. This is just one win away from a Wembley semi-final and only three victories from winning the tournament.

Sherwood, 46, said he wants less fear in his new side's play and also to get Christian Benteke, his star striker, more involved. If they do that, said Sherwood, all should be "fine".

Calling his acceptance of the post "a no-brainer", Sherwood looked forward to his first game in charge on Saturday, February 21 when Villa entertain Stoke City.

Album charts to include streaming

Album charts to include streaming

The Official Charts Company is to overhaul the album chart in this country to reflect the importance of streaming services like Spotify.

It is starting to incorporate streaming sales in its weekly tables, meaning that listens on Google Play, Deezer, Spotify and similar services will all count towards overall totals.

The company believes that the public will be slow to notice any marked difference to begin with.

Martin Talbot, the firm's chief, said early indications are that the move will have only a "modest" impact on the charts. But the streaming services' impact is likely to grow, he added.

Mr Talbot said the switch will boost its mission to collate the most reliable, updated and precise charts.

Taylor Swift, pictured in black tights , last year made the decision to pull of her songs from Spotify because she felt the streaming service did not value her music.

Ken pays Hom-age to London's sausages

Ken pays Hom-age to London's sausages

No New Year celebration would be complete without bangers.

But the ones cookery king Ken Hom came searching for in London were of the meaty, not the firework variety.

Hom, pictured here wearing a trendy monochrome men's scarf , admitted on Chinese New Year's Eve (Wednesday, February 18) that he was carrying sausages in his luggage.

The 65-year-old told reporters that Chinese sausages made in the English capital are the best in the world.

Hom buys his wind-dried meaty treats from Chinatown and follows his mother's old practice of cooking them with rice and fried eggs.

He said he has been visiting this country for nearly three decades to take part in Chinese New Year's festivities.

Fish, noodles, duck and chicken are among his favourite dishes for the season.

Hom's secret of hosting a top New Year party is to cook a maximum of two dishes and enjoys plenty of champagne and wine.

He also divulged the reason for his on-screen calmness. He said cooking is not working, it is a relaxation.

Moore shows less during Oscar triumph

Moore shows less during Oscar triumph

The weather did its best to rain on the film industry's premier fashion parade, otherwise known as the Oscars.

But even the inconvenient elements could not prevent the stars coming out in all their finery at California's Dolby Theatre on Sunday night.

Most of the ladies opted to fly in the face of fashion, ditching the tights to show a bit of leg. But one woman who wasn't showing any leg at all best actress winner Julianne Moore.

The Still Alice star donned a Lagerfield-crafted strapless number, dotted with black accents and draping onto the floor. The 54-year-old red-head's white Chanel gown was complemented by a bun hair-do.

Elsewhere elegant whites, glittering silvers, beads and pearls were all the rage on the Tinseltown red carpet.

Boyhood actress Patricia Arquette, crowned best supporting actress, wore a gown from Rosetta Getty. She also squeezed into a tight black skirt and white bodice, while best actress nominee Marion Cotillard's gown was a Dior polka dot creation.

Could socks help us stop snoring?

Could socks help us stop snoring?

Socks could help us stop snoring and sleep better, according to a new report.

Long-haul flight socks, worn to prevent blood clots, might provide the solution according to Canadian scientists. They say that flight socks reduce fluid which accumulates in the lower legs in the daytime.

Toronto University researchers are recommending cut-down forms of medical compression socks. These are already in common usage throughout the NHS to help care for varicose veins.

Previous research has shown this fluid can ascend to neck regions, resulting in sleep apnoea.

This condition, which is snoring related, is thought to affect 3 million Britons due to fluid and fatty build-up in the neck.

It causes sufferers' neck muscles to collapse and their breathing to shut off for at least 10 seconds. The snoring sound is produced by air vibrating against soft, fatty tissue which blocks its way.

The socks work by keeping the blood moving, by squeezing the bottom half of the leg to prevent fluid accumulation.

Toronto's study split 50 men into two equal groups. The first wore flight socks for a fortnight at bedtime, the others wore normal socks.

Both sets were monitored for snoring and fluid movement. While the normal sock wearers noticed little change, the compression sock wearers enjoyed less fluid movement, as well as less sleep disruption.

Their disturbances reduced from 30-plus times each hour to just 15.

Sleeping experts believe the socks could complement traditional treatment. The study has been published in Sleep Medicine journal.

Andy Murray and Kim Sears to wed at Dunblane hotel

Tennis star Andy Murray and his fiancee Kim Sears have set a date and venue for their wedding.

The British number one and Miss Sears will tie the knot at Murray's luxury hotel, near his home town of Dunblane, Scotland.

The pair are planning to get married on 11 April at the five-star Cromlix House Hotel, with only close friends and family expected to be on the guest list.

Murray and Miss Sears, pictured here looking glamorous in a pair of black tights , have been together since 2005. They met through Kim's father, Nigel, who is head of the women's section of the Lawn Tennis Association.

Despite a brief split in 2009, the pair have been inseparable for some time and Miss Sears is regularly in the crowd watching Murray in action.

The Cromlix House Hotel has its own chapel and was used by Andy's brother Jamie for his wedding in 2010.

Once the home of the Bishop of Dunblane, Andy Murray paid £1.8 million for the hotel in 2013 - the same year he won Wimbledon.

Following an extensive renovation project, the hotel was reopened early last year.

Murray's Mum Judy obviously approves of his relationship, describing Miss Sears as "the best thing to happen to Andy".
