Purple is 'perfect' colour for tights

Purple is 'perfect' colour for tights
A keen fashion expert has informed the press of the latest combination to die for: legwear with purple.

Lauren Bartel, a professional fashion buyer for American chain New York Look, made her comments to the News Star, highlighting how the trend is popular with Scarlett Johansson, who donned the pairing at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in December.

She continued: "Purple looks great under a black coat or paired with black tights, or mod with white tights. Or add a bag to update your look."

Dell Ashley, a make-up artist for Yves Saint-Laurent (YSL), also spoke of how different shades of purple worked for different people but that it could always work on a person in one way or another.

YSL was established in 1961 and is now recognised as one of the biggest names in modern fashion.

Miley steps out in torn tights

Miley steps out in torn tights
Miley Cyrus, the star of Hannah Montana and daughter of Achy Breaky Heart singer Billy Ray, was seen strutting around in Los Angeles with laddered tights.

Pairing the hosiery with blue fluffy boots and an Iron Maiden t-shirt, 16-year-old Miley grabbed lunch with her pals at in North Hollywood and chatted with a few fans and the paparazzi assembly which followed her on her quest.

The incident harks back to Britney Spears' appearance in ripped fishnet stockings earlier this year, when the troubled singer was fighting for custody of her two sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Hannah Montana: The Movie will hit British shores in May, with the film focusing on the titular character revisiting her hometown to get back in touch with what matters the most in her life.

Paul certainly doesn't have magic socks

Paul certainly doesn't have magic socks
TV star Paul Daniels stepped out without style this week in the Caribbean with the wonderful Debbie McGee, with the choice of hosiery on show disappointing one reporter.

Luckily for Paul, perhaps, Richard Simpson of the Daily Mail was on hand to put the ageing magician in check, highlighting how Mr Daniels "managed to break every rule for elegant men's dressing in the process".

He continued: "His black slip-on shoes were matched with sky blue socks pulled as high as they would go - but sadly not high enough to hide a large expanse of pale leg."

Today, Paul Daniels defended his wife to the newspaper, describing her as better-looking than Madonna, who is also 50.

He defended the criticisms originally levelled at her by the national press after she stepped out on the beach in a questionable bikini.

Lots of socks 'perfect to combat smelly feet'

Lots of socks 'perfect to combat smelly feet'
Having plenty of socks is one of many ways to keep your feet fresh on a daily basis, according to a doctor working for a national newspaper.

Dr Keith, the resident medical expert at the Sun, said that a few more pairs of socks may help combat the funk that can set in to a person's feet, particularly given that many people are terrified of showing them to their doc.

He continued: "Ban nylon - wool, cotton or a mix of the two absorb moisture better. And again, you need to change them daily."

Using a pumice stone on hard skin and harnessing the power of washable insoles can also add to the beneficial effects that socks provide.

Dr Keith concluded: "Keep this up and your feet will be transformed."

Working for the future of podiatry, the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists also aims to improve the quality of people's lives through the health of their feet.

Madge strikes a leggy pose for Louis Vuitton

Madge strikes a leggy pose for Louis Vuitton
Madonna is still aiming to impress men all around the world with her physique after posing for Louis Vuitton in one of her sexiest shoots yet.

The singer, who split with husband Guy Ritchie at the end of last year, is shown reclining on a bar's leather bench with one leg in the air, with underwear and fishnet tights leaving very little to the imagination.

Hanging from the outstretched leg's protruding high heel is a top-of-the-range Louis Vuitton bag, showing the superstar's love of fashion items.

The Daily Mail, however, criticised the look for being airbrushed, as the singer had looked "pale and exhausted" over the Christmas period.

Madonna is planning a duet with Britney Spears to reprise their dancing partnership during Britney's upcoming Circus tour.

Pixie goes from fashionable to outmoded?

Pixie goes from fashionable to outmoded?
Pixie Geldof stepped out in an ensemble which, on the first look, seemed quite ridiculous: fake fur and blood red lace tights in the fight against the cold.

With her sister sunning herself on the streets of Miami with more suitable attire - black leggings with a more comfortable vest - her sibling seemed to do herself a distinct injustice with her choice of legwear to match the seemingly unmatchable leopard-print long coat.

Despite this, many may think the get-up was quite trendy, with the wildchild daughter of rocker Bob taking advantage of the chilly temperatures to accessorise with a scarf and the ever-popular Inca hat.

This week, Kelly Osbourne criticised Peaches' decision to elope with her boyfriend, adding she would never do something like marry in Las Vegas as she has more class.

Russell Brand 'reinvigorates male leggings trend'

Russell Brand 'reinvigorates male leggings trend'
A fashion expert has congratulated Russell Brand on his choice of hosiery during 2008, congratulating him on his daring wares to match his audacious comedy style.

Russell's style won him the "Compellingly Ludicrous Award" from columnist Lisa Armstrong, who named him first in the list of trends which caught the eye of roving fashionistas last year, she said in a report for the Times.

Ms Armstrong said his style of legwear gave a universal look, adding: "These spawned an entire revival in the genre. For men as well as women. He who dares leaves nothing to the imagination. In the spirit of openness, maybe that's a good thing."

Andrew Sachs, the target of a radio joke by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross which caused uproar last year, has recently fallen on his feet after being cast in a part for Coronation Street.

Tights 'scrub up well' as polishing equipment

Tights 'scrub up well' as polishing equipment
Captain Crunch has been on the prowl to find a few more credit crisis-busting tips, with the Sun's crusader finding more use for tights after they get laddered.

The reporter highlighted tips handed out liberally by new book Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things, which does not overlook the already-useful hosiery staple.

He continued: "Bring out the shine in freshly polished shoes by buffing them with a scrunched up old pair of tights. It works so well you may never try another method."

Other ideas include using olive oil with white vinegar to polish furniture, or harnessing clear nail varnish on buttons to prevent the thread fraying.

The book is published by Reader's Digest, which was first established by De Witt and Lila Wallace in 1922 in a Greenwich Village apartment.

Fishnet stockings are 'back in vogue'
Fishnet stockings are the way forward if a person wants to be feeling sexy, according to a fashion blogger.

Adeline Rouge of Million Looks said stockings had the ability to hide blemishes and marks and give great shape to legs, emphasising the need for people to wear the correctly-sized ones to avoid them tearing.

Ms Rouge continued: "Fishnet stockings are extremely brave and provocative so that vogue industry sometimes can't dare to have it! Currently they are trendy again! Fine net ones are especially spicy! Stockings change woman's behaviour and life perception!"

Rihanna recently performed at the annual Jingle Ball in the US, singing a number of her hits while wearing stunning fishnet stockings.

Socks may last longer than you think

Socks may last longer than you think
A person may not want to throw away their favourite socks after they have lost their most comfortable features – so sock romantics should find a second use for them, an expert has said.

Chris Baskind, a domestic living blogger, said that in a society in which recycling is popular, it probably was not the best idea to ditch beloved legwear because of the elastic going alone.

He continued: "Wash it, turn the sock inside out and use it as a dusting glove. And nobody will say a thing if you wear them inside out and dance across the floor. Just crank up some music and get to cleaning."

Socks are a celebrity favourite at the moment, with Eva Mendes asking for socks for Christmas due to her distinct shortage of funky footwear.

Brand is 'on form' in leggings

Brand is 'on form' in leggings
Russell Brand is back on the big stage with his new tour, Scandalous, with the popular yet controversial comedian still wearing the legwear which everyone famously associates him with.

Mere months after the Andrew Sachs hullabaloo which caused him to resign and partner in crime Jonathan Ross to lose his prime-time slot on BBC1 for three months, Brand bounced back onto the stage in his trademark legwear to deliver his personal slant on the recent happenings.

In true Brand style, Russell was not one to back down and joked about how he was more concerned about his choice of clothing - like his famous leggings - as opposed to a defence when facing the 50 to 60 journalists which were encamped outside of his door after the rude phone calls broadcast on the BBC.

Andrew Sachs has since landed a part on Coronation Street and has been taking part in Dictionary Corner on the new Countdown, which is now presented by football pundit legend Jeff Stelling.

Lady GaGa 'rocking out with tights'

Lady GaGa 'rocking out with tights'
Funky legwear could be popular with fans of Lady GaGa, who has been seen recently sporting some interesting items to cover up her pins, it is reported.

She has been spotted wearing tight leggings during a rehearsal break in London's Kings Cross and was also seen in some fishnet tights for an appearance on T4, note Beverley Lyons and Laura Sutherland, writing for the Daily Record.

"I have these amazing fashion outfits but they're very intricate or graphic and pretty uncomfortable sometimes, depending on what trainwreck of an idea I've got in my head," Lady GaGa tells the publication.

She adds she is "empowered by fashion" and her words reflect the sentiment that she wishes America was similar to the Andy Warhol era.

In other recent celebrity fashion news, Alexa Chung has been seen wearing opaque tights to complement her overall outfit, reports Stacey Malvern for FemaleFirst.

Ms Chung was photographed wearing a denim dress to go with the legwear.

This year 'set for 80s comeback'

This year 'set for 80s comeback'
The 80s are back in fashion and it will be a difficult trend to avoid in 2009, it is claimed.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Hilary Alexander says that the 80s is making a comeback this year and there were "fashion essentials without which no respectable Eighties wardrobe was complete".

Such items include leg-warmers, leggings, ankle socks, patterned tights and neon Spandex leggings, according to the fashion expert.

Writing for FemaleFirst, Jessica Watson commented that leggings have stood the test of time and celebrities such as Lady GaGa and Lindsay Lohan enjoying the legwear.

"A bit like Sleeping Beauty, they [the 80s] have been roused from their fashion coma by the mwaah-mwaah air-kiss of style," Ms Alexander comments.

Other parts of the 80s wardrobe that she cites include jelly shoes, strapless jumpsuits, cycle shorts under ra-ra skirts and floppy scarves.

For those that did not experience the decade, Ms Alexander adds that they can get hold of some Elnett hairspray and call the fashion vintage.

Mythbusters need your help, sock fans
A washing machine-based task is facing the special effects maestros on TV show Mythbusters, who aim to disprove the myth that socks get lost in the contraption.

Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, who take on three urban legends or misconceptions in each episode of their popular series, are asking people for socks and similar hosiery so they can truly find out if they get lost in the wash.

The show's producers said: "Did your grandma or Aunt Betty give you some horrible socks for the holidays that you'd like to get rid of? Well, the search to re-gift is OVER! Send them to us!"

Jamie Hyneman has worked with Nike and 7-Up, with Adam Savage lending a hand with Terminator 3, the Matrix sequels and Steven Spielberg's AI.

Kerry fights back with fashion sense

Kerry fights back with fashion sense
Kerry Katona, who is currently rebuilding her career after a disastrous few months, stepped out in style this week to show that her fashion sense was still strong.

Confidently striding out of her house in Cheshire, the former Atomic Kitten star accessorised her outfit with a pair of shiny leggings, which the Daily Mail stated made her look "almost svelte" - something she seemed aware of, carrying her coat with her to put on after the photos.

The singing star has ditched her fuller figure after paying £15,000 for liposuction and breast reduction.

However, the Sun was not so flattering about her style, noting that her shiny silver hosiery looked more like the get-ups of the contestants from BBC's Hole in the Wall, the game show presented by Dale Winton.

According to MSN's review of 2008, Kerry's appearance on This Mornnig was voted the most cringeworthy media moment of the year.

White socks 'should be left to athletics'

White socks 'should be left to athletics'
White socks are great for athletics and sport, but they should stay in the gym bag at all times, according to a male-orientated website.

AskMen.com stated that despite attempts to prove the contrary, white socks don't match anything unless you are a sugarcane plantation owner from the beginning of the 20th century.

The website added that they were essentially sportswear and should not be looked at in any other way.

It continued: "And just as you would never dare wear a hockey jersey under your dinner jacket, nor should you ever dream of pairing white socks with your designer jeans or your wingtips."

eHow.com said that white socks were susceptible to becoming dingy and dirty in a washing machine, recommending that a person soaks them overnight in hot water and detergent to get them sparkly again.

Sock investments are 'for the long term'

Sock investments are 'for the long term'
Socks and tights fans take note: the credit crunch may have changed your opinion on investing on your beloved legwear.

However, it is not for the worst as people are just thinking in the long-term when they buy their leggings and stockings over the next few months, a leading fashion magazine columnist has said.

Shelly Vella of Cosmopolitan said that "rather than the fastest, disposable, cheap fashion, people are spending a little bit more on classic pieces, less throw away, better quality that has more longevity".

The legwear specialist added that modern classics which can be updated, such as opaque tights, are a great idea and one she feels her readers will "really buy into".

According to a recent study by Grazia Magazine, 83 per cent of people are still shopping for clothes despite 71 per cent being intimidated by the credit crunch, with little treats such as tights helping them feel better in the tough economic time.

Smelly feet? Keep your socks on
Men wanting to impress women may want to keep a fresh pair of socks with them at all times, if recent research is to be believed.

The study, carried out my Lamisil Once, found that 90 per cent of women have told of their disgust at smelly or poorly-maintained feet, highlighting the benefits of wearing scent-trapping hosiery or just having a spare pair in case things get desperate, according to FemaleFirst.

Washing the feet regularly will avoid itchy rashes such as athlete's foot, it adds.

Smokers were also near the top of the list too, with 50 per cent of women interviewed saying they would turn down a kiss from a smoker.

According to Ygoy, a specialist in treating feet, washing feet with green tea is well-recommended as it can do away with any overpowering pongs.

Fashion lover Peaches Geldof evidently does not have to think twice about the power of legwear this season as she was spotted in trendy Miami with a pair of black leggings on.

Peaches, who eloped with her partner Max Drummey in late 2008 to the chagrin of her charitable dad Bob, also cut her hair to a manageable bob after her previous locks had reached down to her waist, according to the Daily Mail's showbiz reporter Miriam Zendle.

Along with the legwear, she was also demonstrating her newest tattoo by wearing a striped black and white vest, with the name of her hubby displayed on her left wrist.

On New Year's Eve, Madame Geldof spent her time in New York away from her husband, partying hard while many people spoke of her marriage being on the rocks.

Madonna chooses tights again for another sexy shoot
After a turbulent year in 2008, it seems that Madonna is not taking her foot from the pedal as she continues to promote her work with another interesting set of clothes.

Madge, who turned 50 last year, is endorsing her new album Hard Candy with a white-orientated outfit, using her beloved hosiery again: this time, pulling up the bright tights.

Pairing the legwear with thigh-high laced boots, gloves, a thong and a small top that leaves little to the imagination, the pop star looks like she is on a mission to make people think twice about how old she is.

Another campaign recently saw Madge posing for Louis Vuitton, with the artist donning fishnet tights to show off the wares of the fashion company, including a handbag dangling from her shoe's heel.

Strange pair horde thousands of socks

Strange pair horde thousands of socks
A pair of men from Southport have been the focus of a reflection by a local newspaper which remembers the interesting tale surrounding their unhealthy obsession with socks.

The Southport Visitor remembered the tale of two unnamed guys who used to trawl through bars looking for people and their socks, photographing the individuals and sealing their socks in sandwich bags for future reference.

After several years, the duo collected the hosiery en masse to the point where the house had an 18-inch thick carpet made of socks.

One officer told the paper: "It was like there had been an explosion in a sock factory and socks had blown all over the place. In my 25 years with the police I have never seen anything like it."

Although not as weirdly obsessed with footwear, former Spice Girl Mel B recently sang her praises for silly socks.

Diabetic socks could hit the market soon

Diabetic socks could hit the market soon
Special socks have been developed to lead the fight against problems caused by diabetes, it has been announced.

The Istanbul Teaching Hospital in Turkey revealed its new development this week: hosiery akin to toe socks which stops the threat of blood poisoning caused by foot infections, the Daily Mail reported.

Commenting on the technology, the newspaper continued: "They say many infections get into the deep tissues of the foot through cracks and splits. The space between the toes is vulnerable to cracking, as the skin is much thinner."

Last week, charity Diabetes UK celebrated its 75th anniversary after being founded on January 10th 1934 by Time Machine novelist HG Wells and Dr RD Lawrence, both of whom suffered from the condition.

Black tights 'still the way forward in 2009'

Black tights 'still the way forward in 2009'
Black tights should not be thrown away as part of a fashionista's annual wardrobe clear-out, according to a style expert.

Patra Canan of the State News said the popular legwear was able to add a great level of chic to pretty much any outfit, with spring dresses already being converted into winter wear by pairing the two together.

She added that black tights are able to make legs look longer, particularly when paired with black boots.

Ms Canan concluded: "Black is typically a universally flattering colour and what goes over them, be it a dress or shorts, is up to you but a clean, classic look is always in season."

Couture in the City picked up on this trend long ago, highlighting how celebs such as Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hilary Duff all loved the fashion.

Leggings are 'only for a chosen few'

Leggings are 'only for a chosen few'
The fashion of leggings is great for young girls, yet fully-grown women must abide by certain rules if they are to pull off the look, a fashion expert has stated.

Average Josephine, writing for news provider Everything Michigan, said that leggings are strictly casual clothing and should only be worn to less important events, with the workplace a particular no-no for the trend.

The only suitable footwear to match the hosiery, she added, are flat ballerina shoes, with the writer adding that despite body shape, the rear end should always be covered by clothing to avoid any lecherous looks.

Perhaps most importantly, Average Josephine said: "Never wear white leggings. Or pink. Or anything lighter than black, brown or navy. Even the fittest of fashionistas could not pull off this look."

The Daily Mail last week commented on the rise of high-shine leggings, noting that despite them seeming so opposed to current fashion, sales are through the roof.

Floral tights are 'fashion marmite'

Floral tights are 'fashion marmite'
Patterned tights are usually all the rage with one group of people during each season, with floral tights serving as the modern fashion "marmite", according to a style expert.

FemaleFirst spoke of the latest trends in the hosiery market, with both floral and tartan legwear being a favourite with many women.

The news provider said that oddly, "these floral tights are being tipped as a spring staple, despite tights not normally being associated with the spring/summer sweeps".

It was added: "That said, considering how cold our summers tend to be, maybe they ought to start making a permanent appearance."

Furthermore, lace tights have been tipped as a continuing trend after the gothic catwalk looks over the winter period.

The Cherry Blossom Girl, a French fashion follower and blogger, said that floral tights had the ability to add a splash of colour to an environment which may seem a lot more grey and gloomy.

Layering with socks is 'best way to keep warm'

Layering with socks is 'best way to keep warm'
People looking for decent winter warmers without looking like an unfashionable soul this season should look no further than a decent pair of socks, according to a recent report.

Jennifer Fong, writing for Canadian news service Canwest in the country where cold means cold, interviewed the stylish Tara Morrissey, a woman who has to deal with low temperatures on a day-to-day basis.

Ms Fong forwarded her advice and stated: "For extra flair, knee-high socks lend both form and function.

"Layering - with socks, tops, and thermal underwear - is Morrissey's secret to staying puffy-jacket-free."

According to the sports and fitness division of eHow, slowly building up layers of fleece can keep a person warm and give them more choice in how warm they need to be, preventing them from freezing up and sweating profusely.

Fashion police 'hunt down winter legging wearers'

Fashion police 'hunt down winter legging wearers'
Leggings, despite their great flexibility with a range of outfits, are not the best choice for the winter, it has been stated.

According to the Fashion Police of Louisiana State University's student newspaper Tiger Weekly, leggings are all the rage in the winter but are still not suitable to face up to the cold in, instead recommending them for warmer conditions.

It added: "Here's a thought: leggings DO NOT substitute a sturdy pair of Levi’s on a chilly day. Just because everyone else wants to freeze their derrieres off this winter does not mean you should too."

Earlier this week, it was established by Look's Sinead O'Donaghue that celebrities love loud leggings, including Lindsay Lohan, Katy Perry and Fearne Cotton.
