Gadget key to ending odd socks?

Gadget key to ending odd socks?

Going to put some socks on in the morning only to be faced with dozens of odd socks and no pairs is undeniably frustrating. And then when you grab two seemingly identical black ones, it turns out they are completely different on closer inspection.

However, a new development could be key to ending this problem with an iPhone app helping people match their footwear.

The theory is that each sock contains a small microchip, similar to those used in contactless bank cards and when you come to pair socks after a wash you simply scan them into your phone to check you are matching them correct right and left with one another.

The chips also store details such as how many times the socks have been through the wash.

However, if high tech socks seem a bit too futuristic for you, we suggest investing in lots of pairs of brightly coloured patterned socks so that it is obvious which one goes with which.

Tights on show in Carrie Diaries

Tights on show in Carrie Diaries

Leading lady AnnaSophia Robb is seen in a host of unique ensembles throughout the series, with her legwear often providing a unique twist to the outfit.

This comes as no surprise given that Eric Daman, who made tights a must-have accessory in Gossip Girl, is behind the costumes.

From sheer black tights to patterned leggings and polka dot patterned hosiery, Carrie models a wide variety of legwear as she walks the halls at high school and heads into Manhattan for her law internship.

Other fashion must-haves seen in the show, which are sure to be imitated by teenage girls across the globe, are Carrie's personalised satchel, pussy bow blouses, neon colours and her 'C' necklace.

Kate prefers to wear sheer tights

Kate prefers to wear sheer tights

To celebrate Kate's birthday earlier this month, Vogue analysed the Duchess's wardrobe, compiling stats on every aspect of her clothes, from hemlines to fabrics and colours, and found that nude tights are overwhelmingly her favourite legwear.

When the future Queen's pins aren't covered in sheer tights, the fashion magazine found that she opts for opaque black tights 12% of the time and bare legs on just 11% of outings.

Kate's fashion choices are copied by women across the globe and all eyes are likely to on her in the coming months as she models her maternity wardrobe.

It is likely that Kate will have to swap her favourite tights for some maternity hosiery in the near future as her bump grows bigger.

Dan Stevens 'most stylish man'

Dan Stevens 'most stylish man'

Downton's Dan Stevens has topped GQ's Best Dressed list, beating the likes of David Beckham, Prince William and Daniel Craig.

The actor, who has recently left the series, garners praise for his pulled together looks, with his outfits every bit as dapper as those worn by his on screen alter ego Matthew Crawley.

"What can I say? We've all got a man crush on Dan," said GQ editor Dylan Jones.

"He dresses like every GQ man should."

If you want to replicate Dan's look for yourself, it's all about the details. Stylish cashmere socks and fashionable men's scarves are the perfect accessories for the sharp tailored suits that Dan favours when out and about.

However, Dan does also know how to dress for off duty occasions too and has been known to have some fun with some bright socks, like the orange pair he was snapped in earlier this year.

Billie Piper avoids tights faux pas

Billie Piper avoids tights faux pas

Billie Piper has racked up some style misses as well as hits in her years in the spotlight and in particular has made some wrong steps with her legwear, for example the black ankle socks she teamed with a floral dress at the races in 2011.

However, she showed that simple is best while filming the Graham Norton Show recently, showing off her pins in some black tights.

The actress paired her hosiery with an elegant black strapless dress, and even though the ensemble showed quite a bit of skin, she avoided flashing too much flesh by keeping her legs covered in her opaque tights.

The former Doctor Who star wore her hair loose over her shoulders and kept accessories to a minimal, but opted for smoky eye makeup, ruby red lips and matching scarlet nails to complete her look.

While we love Billie's all-black ensemble, if she'd wanted to try something a bit less safe, some patterned or coloured tights would have matched her dress perfectly.

Sam shows off his socks on CBB

Sam shows off his socks on CBB

It's not often that men get to show off their socks; in winter they are covered up by trousers and in summer, even sock fanatics like us know you shouldn't team socks and sandals.

But Celebrity Big Brother contestant Sam Robertson found the perfect ensemble for showing off his footwear as he entered the house, a kilt.

The former Coronation Street star showed off his Scottish heritage in a red tartan kilt teamed with a thick black jumper. And while his bare legs may have been chilly as he waved to the crowds he ensured his feet were warm and cosy in some black socks and black Doc Marten-style boots.

However, we think that Sam could have gone one step further and showed off his Scottish blood by wearing a pair of Argyle patterned socks which are based on the tartan of the Campbell Clan who hailed from Argyll.

Let's hope we see some on display during Sam's time in the CBB house.

Footballers fined for wrong socks

Footballers fined for wrong socks

Reports in the German newspaper, Bild, claim that the pair showed up for a recent training session in Qatar sporting white socks instead of the regulatory black football socks.

"We have a common goal," head coach Jupp Heynckes told Bild. "We need discipline. It starts with everyone wearing the same socks."

Schweinsteiger and Kroos reportedly wore black socks for the subsequent training session, but it was too late for them to avoid punishment.

The newspaper also claimed that club captain Philippe Lahm had been asked to set the cost of the penalty to be levied on the duo.

Kroos and Schweinsteiger were spared further embarrassment as Bild announced that a free afternoon on Sunday in Qatar allowed the pair to wear whatever colour socks they liked.

Heynckes' no nonsense approach was supported by Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who said: "I like the way the coach acts."

Ronnie Wood shows off red socks

Ronnie Wood shows off red socks

The Rolling Stones rocker opted for a pair of red socks which coordinated with Sally's shift dress.

Ronnie's bold footwear was on display as he enjoyed the show from the front row, peeking out from between his grey suit trousers and cream shoes. His outfit was finished off by a plain white shirt, while Sally also kept things simple with bare legs and nude heels.

Sally and Ronnie have attended a number of fashion events this week, including a party hosted by Tommy Hilfiger, who designed Sally's wedding dress.

The couple tied the knot on December 21 after dating for just six months.

There is a 31 year age gap between them; however, as Ronnie's socks show, the rocker is certainly still young at heart.

Tinie Tempah needs some new socks

Tinie Tempah needs some new socks

The rapper has attracted criticism for his entire ensemble, with people slating his bright red suit which he teamed with black loafers, a white shirt and a spotted bow tie.

The trousers on the suit were also slightly cropped ensuring that everybody could see he had neglected to put on any socks.

Tinie was one of the co-hosts of the exclusive bash alongside designer Paul Smith and GQ editor Dylan Jones.

A host of celebrities attended the event at the Martin Creed Gallery Restaurant at Sketch in London including Nick Grimshaw, Jessie J and One Direction's Harry Styles.

James Corden also attended and seemed to be copying Tinie's style as he also donned a bow tie. Although he teamed his with a rather less eye-catching black cardigan, and presumably some socks.

Laura Whitmore models ankle socks

Laura Whitmore models ankle socks

With some fetching ankle socks peeping out above her suede boots, the 27-year-old looked rather chic at the Savoy Hotel event. Combining an elaborate pink, green and black skirt adorned with hearts and llamas with a simple white blouse, the fashionista made certain that she would be one of the best dressed celebs at this year's event.

Whitmore presented ITV's backstage coverage of the awards last year and is favourite to return to the role in 2013.

The TV star is also set to appear on next week's episode of ITV 2's new panel show Fake Reaction.

Emeli Sandé, Mumford and Sons and Alt-J were the big winners receiving three nominations each. Ben Howard, Olly Murs, Plan B, Jessie Ware, Rita Ora, Paloma Faith, Coldplay and Rihanna all were nominated for two different categories.

Plus there was a posthumous nomination for Amy Winehouse in the Best British Female Solo Artist category.

Get your thermal socks on this week

Get your thermal socks on this week

Temperatures as set to plummet to as low as minus five over Wednesday and Thursday, but the wind chill factor will mean that conditions could feel as cold as minus 10, meaning people will need to dig out their hats, scarves and thermal socks if they have to battle the elements.

Up to 4in (10cm) of snow is predicted to fall across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and East Anglia in the next 24 hours, which is expected to freeze as temperatures slip into minus figures towards the middle of the week.

The Met Office has issued a serve weather action warning over the next five days across England, with social and healthcare services urged to prioritise high-risk groups, such as the elderly.

Members of the public are advised to wear lots of thin layers in order to keep warm and thick socks are recommended to be worn out and about as well as at night.

Gizzi looks great in black tights

Gizzi looks great in black tights

The TV presenter teamed her opaque legwear with a gold tunic-style dress and some skyscraper heels as she attended the event in London's Leicester Square.

Her black hair was worn up in her trademark beehive, which has invited comparisons to screen siren Audrey Hepburn in the past.

She accessorised with some statement earrings and kept her makeup to a minimum.

And Gizzi was not the only one protecting her legs from the cold at the event, with VV Brown also teaming her ensemble with some black tights. The singer wore her sheer hosiery with a shiny black playsuit and black slingbacks. She also kept accessories minimal with just a simple chain and a black clutch.

Comedian Olivia Lee kept cosy in leather leggings and a loose jumper while TV presenter Laura Whitmore teamed her ankle boots with some cute socks to keep her toes warm.

Bradley Cooper models men's scarf

Bradley Cooper models men's scarf

The Silver Linings Playbook star pulled on a cosy grey scarf as he attended the Spanish premiere of the film in Madrid this week.

He teamed the accessory with a black overcoat, a checked shirt, grey trousers and brown shoes as he made his way down the red carpet.

The look was decidedly more casual than the three-piece suit Cooper wore for the film's Paris premiere, which also took place this week, but was probably more weather appropriate.

Cooper is often seen accessorising with men's scarves, wearing them both with his off duty jeans and hoodies and with his suits at red carpet events.

If he is in need of some new neckwear he may be able to persuade pal Ryan Gosling to knit him a scarf after his Place Beyond the Pines co-star admitted he has taken up the craft in a recent interview.

Helen Mirren models shades of grey

Helen Mirren models shades of grey

The stylish star showed she can do casual as well as red carpet glamour and was dressed completely in shades of grey from the waist down in a knee-length skirt, grey opaque tights and brogue-style shoes.

However, she ensured that her top half was clad in brighter colours, wearing a red cardigan over her grey top and draping a pale pink pashmina over her shoulders to protect her from the cold.

The Hitchcock actress wore her cropped blonde hair loose and kept her accessories minimal as she posed with director Stephen Daldry, who was keeping warm in a black overcoat and patterned men's scarf.

Mirren was hosting the screening of the 1934 French film as part of the BFI's Screen Epiphanies series. Daldry interviewed her ahead of the screening.

Maya Rudolph is casual in leggings

Maya Rudolph is casual in leggings

The actress teamed her tight-fitting legwear with a loose checked shirt and a patterned cardigan for the Sundance Film Festival showing.

She completed the look with knee high black boots to help fight off the winter chill.

The outfit was decidedly more casual than the ensembles normally seen at film premieres, however, stars typically model more 'off duty' looks at Sundance.

Maya was accompanied at the event by co-star Toni Collette, who also opted for tight black trousers, teamed with a short grey jacket, a black polo neck and wedge heeled boots.

Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell and Zoe Levin also attended the event although cast members Amada Peet, AnnaSophia Robb and Allison Janney were absent.

The film certainly went down well with the festival's audience, receiving a standing ovation at its first showing.

Dakota Fanning keeps warm in tights

Dakota Fanning keeps warm in tights

However, with snow falling outside, the former child star did make one concession to the winter weather; a pair of black opaque tights.

She teamed the legwear with a sparkly navy blue mini skirt and a sleeveless top, which showed off a flash of bare midriff. The look was completed with some heeled ankle boots and a slick of red lipstick.

Dakota has taken care to dress in a mature fashion at recent public appearances as she makes the transition from child star to serious adult actress.

Her co-star Elizabeth Olsen, who plays her best friend in the film, was noticeably absent at the screening, but made an appearance at the after party wearing a loose black top and leather leggings.

Footballer fined for low socks

Footballer fined for low socks

American Football's governing body fined the running back for the infringement which happened during Sunday's conference championship game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Gore, who scored two touchdowns in the second half to earn his team a place in next month's Superbowl in New Orleans, fell foul of the league's stringent rules on a player's uniform.

"When you're playing, you don't think about it," Gore told Associated Press on Wednesday. "You're trying to win."

This is not the first time that Gore has sparked controversy. The 29-year-old was fined the same amount at the end of the regular season for throwing a ball into the stands after a touchdown.

Many pundits have called the fine against Gore harsh, noting that Washington Redskins' Trent Williams was fined only $7,875 for punching Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman in a playoff game earlier this month, in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

Black tights on show at the NTAs

Black tights on show at the NTAs

However, there were a few attendees who showed it is possible to look stylish while keeping warm, if you cover your pins in some tights.

Downton Abbey actress Sophie McShera was one star who opted to cover up, teaming her gold and black mini dress with opaque tights and black heels, adding some colour with a slick of red lipstick.

Another young star, X Factor contestant Ella Henderson, also pulled on black tights with her black lace prom-style dress and gold and black jacket as she walked the red carpet at the event.

She also kept the legwear on as she took to the stage for a performance, although she did change into a floaty pink dress.

The Saturdays wow in tight leggings

The Saturdays wow in tight leggings

The show, which will be broadcast on the American channel E!, follows the girls through four months of touring in the US as The Saturdays try to conquer the American market.

Frankie Sandford and Vanessa White both rocked the leggings look, with Frankie pushing the boat out in some fashionable leather ones, whilst Vanessa kept it simple with a pair of plain black leggings. Frankie complemented her outfit with a white blouse and lemon blazer, whilst Vanessa opted for a black leather top.

Rochelle Humes and Una Healy look very elegant in black and royal blue dresses respectively

Mollie King made a very bold choice with her tartan trousers, but she pulled them off combined with a plain black top and a trendy black trilby to boot.

Gemma Cairney sparkles in tights

Gemma Cairney sparkles in tights

The radio presenter and former fashion stylist's black tights were jazzed up with eye-catching sparkly silver studs which certainly made her legwear stand out from the crowd.

Gemma teamed her tights with bold pink trainers and a denim skirt which was slit to the thigh, presumably so you could see more of her tights.

A grey t-shirt and baseball-style jacket completed the look, but while Gemma chose to dress the tights down, they'd also look great with a little black dress for a special occasion.

Other celebs at the event included TV presenter Laura Whitmore, chef Gizzi Erskine and Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack.

Items up for grabs included donations from the likes of Marilyn Manson, Fearne Cotton, Paloma Faith, Tinie Tempah and Dermot O'Leary.

David Walliams keeps warm in gloves

David Walliams keeps warm in gloves

David Walliams looked his usual dapper self as he arrived at the latest round of BGT auditions in Glasgow, and accessorised his suit and warm overcoat with stylish black leather gloves, as well as a Union Jack umbrella.

His co-judge Simon Cowell also looked warm in a smart black coat and soft grey wool scarf.

However, the rest of his outfit was decidedly casual, with the music mogul teaming faded jeans with his trademark white t-shirt.

And even Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon must have found the temperatures north of the border too cold to handle as they ditched their usual dresses for something a bit more substantial.

Amanda wore a black suit, while Alesha gave a nod to Scottish fashions in a tartan coat.

US bankers embrace funky socks

US bankers embrace funky socks

There is one way people forced to wear dull work attire can inject some fun into their ensembles, with some bright patterned socks.

Over in the US, a group of bankers have started the Friday Socks movement, which sees them pulling on their boldest footwear on the final day of the working week.

Speaking to Business Insider, Joshua Weiner, who spearheaded the idea, said: "Socks are the most overlooked part of a person's wardrobe.

"After a long 60 hour four day work week, it's nice to wake up in the morning and think about the next day off by putting on Friday Socks that suit up your mood."

He added that as the socks can be easily concealed, they are a good way to inject some fun into a very conservative environment.

So why not adopt the trend on this side of the Atlantic and stock up on some wacky socks to wear on Fridays?

And even during the rest of the week, you don't have to stick to plain black. Some Argyle socks are still smart, but show a bit of personality.
