Footballers fined for wrong socks

Reports in the German newspaper, Bild, claim that the pair showed up for a recent training session in Qatar sporting white socks instead of the regulatory black football socks.

"We have a common goal," head coach Jupp Heynckes told Bild. "We need discipline. It starts with everyone wearing the same socks."

Schweinsteiger and Kroos reportedly wore black socks for the subsequent training session, but it was too late for them to avoid punishment.

The newspaper also claimed that club captain Philippe Lahm had been asked to set the cost of the penalty to be levied on the duo.

Kroos and Schweinsteiger were spared further embarrassment as Bild announced that a free afternoon on Sunday in Qatar allowed the pair to wear whatever colour socks they liked.

Heynckes' no nonsense approach was supported by Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who said: "I like the way the coach acts."
