Carla Bruni discovered in leggy 1989 shoot

Carla Bruni discovered in leggy 1989 shoot
Back in the day, Carla Bruni was known not for her high-profile marriage to French president Nicolas Sarkozy but for her modelling career, with the beauty resurfacing in a British catalogue from 1989.

Donning a pair of stockings along with lacy underwear from Next's line in the late 80s, Carla showed exactly why the likes of Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and current husband Mr Sarkozy all fell for her natural beauty.

However, nothing she was doing pushed boundaries she'd already vaulted over before, with a number of arty nude pictures having greeted the public eye in recent months.

For example, Carla Bruni in Bed - a photo taken by Pamela Henson in 1994 depicting the French first lady nude - fetched $19,600 (£11,500) in Berlin at the beginning of the month.

Traction satisfaction gained from socks over shoes?

Traction satisfaction gained from socks over shoes?
You know the situation: you're walking along on a cold day and to add insult to atmospheric injury, footing is lost on ice - along with grace and pride - and you hit the floor.

Not to worry, say scientists at the University of Otago in New Zealand - simply swap your socks and shoes around and walk on the hosiery instead.

The plucky Kiwis, who are currently well into winter now, ran the tests to see if the likes of Dunedin - a particularly hilly area - could be traversed, with socks being a great thing to use.

Dr Lianne Parkin of the university said: "It was an opportunity for some of the investigators to put their theoretical knowledge about randomised controlled trials into practice, it was great fun and we found that socks really do seem to help."

Yet despite this traction satisfaction gained from wearing socks over shoes, there was only one downside registered by those taking part in the trial - a distinct feeling of embarrassment at the fashion statement being made.

Dunedin reputedly has the world's steepest residential road in the form of Baldwin Street.

Denise Van Outen 'up to no good' in drunken tights raid

Denise Van Outen 'up to no good' in drunken tights raid
Once a TV presenter and now a leading lady in London's glittering West End, Denise Van Outen is on top of the world and finally getting to the highlights of her career.

However, in a recent interview with Star magazine, Denise revealed a stranger and wilder side to herself, harnessing hosiery in a humorous heist after a few drinks with one of her best friends, the Press Association revealed.

She told the publication: "A few years ago one of my best friends got a hole in her American tan tights. So, for a joke, we put them over our heads and pretended to hold up my local kebab shop."

Ms Van Outen also confessed to her love of Alan Carr, noting that she has a soft spot for funny people with a certain level of "geek chic".

Denise's big break came in the form of the Big Breakfast, which she originally joined as a travel and weather reporter.

Justin Timberlake gives opinion on hosiery

Justin Timberlake gives opinion on hosiery
Singer and actor Justin Timberlake showed his stylish side in a recent interview, commenting on his love for women's fashion - even though he doesn't wear it himself.

The singer of SexyBack and Rock Your Body launched his line of clothes at Selfridges in London this week, which is aimed specifically at women.

William Rast, the brand he part-owns, specialises in jeans - something that he believes you are "never too old to wear".

He noted that while jeans should never be too loose, the shape of someone's calves should not be made completely obvious by their tightness.

He added: "And if you're going to dress them up with nice shoes and a jacket, the socks have got to be good - don't go teaming them with plain old white sports socks."

One person he particularly loves as a fashion icon is the inimitable Michelle Obama, with the US first lady also being noted recently in the press for her love of designer Michael Kors.

Paris Hilton adopts stockings for jail recording

Paris Hilton adopts stockings for jail recording
Paris Hilton is on a search for another best friend, with the socialite and heiress heading to a prison as part of her second series to track down another eternal companion.

The 28-year-old, who once wore the standard orange boiler suit as a prisioner, instead donned a sexy police uniform which was as far from the regulation clothing usually associated with the job, adding stockings to the mix for a little more glamour.

Her prospective best friends were not as lucky, however, as they had to line up in pink underwear opposite her, leaving very little to the imagination.

Paris explained that she had made mistakes in the past and decided to use it as a chance for any of the contestants to get anything off their chest.

In recent weeks, Paris Hilton and footballer Cristiano Ronaldo have been romantically linked.

Two socks a day keep mosquitoes at bay

Two socks a day keep mosquitoes at bay
Tucking your trousers into your socks may not be the height of summer fashion, but it will keep biting insects at bay, one medical expert suggested.

Chief medical officer Dr Joann Schaefer warned against the dangers of ticks, mosquitoes and other critters with a taste for human blood.

As well as wearing insect repellent, she told the Press Association that people should wear solid shoes and socks, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts.

Tucking trousers into socks will prevent creatures getting to your ankles and is a particularly good idea at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most prominent, she added.

Socks can also prevent winter-related mishaps, with scientists at the University of Otago in New Zealand last week suggesting they be worn over shoes to give extra grip on ice and snow.

Harry Potter swaps cape for tights

Harry Potter swaps cape for tights
Daniel Radcliffe, the 19-year-old star of the Harry Potter film series, has revealed a penchant for tights as part of his latest form of art - ballet.

He told Esquire magazine that he is learning the basics of the dance form as he is worried that he will not be able to cope with his fellow young drama hopefuls in terms of singing and movement.

"I need to make myself as viable a choice for any part as I possibly can," Radcliffe told the news provider, admitting that Potter phenomenon will not provide him with a safety net forever.

The young star has also admitted that despite having legions of fans worldwide turning out to see him in his Sunday best on the red carpet, they may not be as impressed with his choice of attire when relaxing at home.

"The me that sits in a darkened room for eight hours a day watching the cricket with a big bowl of pasta in my socks and my underwear is not nearly so appealing to women," he told the AP.

Socks on show for King of Pop tributes

Socks on show for King of Pop tributes
It's not often that having bright white socks on show could be considered a wise idea, but thousands of pairs have been on display since the death of music legend Michael Jackson.

His trademark look - tight black trousers, white ankle socks and black shoes - was all the rage during the Moonwalker era and has been making a comeback since the King of Pop's death.

Hundreds of Michael Jackson fans gathered in South Africa last week to perform the infamous dance moves in tribute to the icon, the BBC reports.

Crowds in Johannesburg's Nelson Mandela Square did the moonwalk, many dressed in the white socks, black shoes and glitter gloves.

Today, thousands of people have been gathering in Los Angeles ahead of the memorial service for Jackson, with local retailers offering up pairs of white socks for those who want to pay a fashion tribute.

Millions are expected to watch the event on television and online all around the world.

Don't put your foot in it when choosing sports socks, doc says

Don't put your foot in it when choosing sports socks, doc says
Sporty types looking to purchase their next pair of athletic socks are being told to look beyond colour when choosing their footwear.

The key factors to choosing a good pair of athletic socks are stitching and materials, podiatrist Dr Joseph Di Francesca tells the Norwich Bulletin.

He points out that the best sports socks have no stitching, as this can be a source of irritation, and suggests that material should be capable of wicking - lifting away moisture from the skin - and antimicrobial.

Socks made from merino wool or silver-based fibers are particularly good choices, the foot expert continues.

"While the purchase of athletic socks should not become a major life decision, there is more to it than just colour," he added.

Story behind King of Pop's white socks revealed

Story behind King of Pop's white socks revealed
The first appearance of Michael Jackson's white socks has been explained by the designer who helped create the infamous look.

Mike Salisbury was the man behind the cover art for Jackson's debut solo album Off The Wall, which features the King of Pop with big afro, black tuxedo and white sparkly socks.

The idea behind the image was to make a statement that the young star's first offering was "as big as Sinatra coming on stage in Vegas", Salisbury explains.

It was at Michael's request that the white socks were included.

They were custom-made by Hollywood costume designer Bob Mackie and teamed with black loafers and a pose that showed the socks off as much as possible.

Jackson also wore a single sparkly white glove, a look copied in tribute by his brothers at the memorial service in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Summer tights should be nude, fashion experts advise

Summer tights should be nude, fashion experts advise
Not all women have the multimillion-dollar legs of Tina Turner and instead prefer to keep their pins under wraps.

But as the weather hots up they can still wear tights, stay cool and look fashionable, image consultants Deborah Boland and JoJami Tyler state.

The Fabulous After 40 fashion experts urge women to avoid tights that make their legs look like "shiny brown cinnamon sticks" and instead invest in the sheerest nude pair they can find.

Nude fishnets are ideal for giving legs colour and coverage as well as a subtle and modern look, the duo add.

However, they also warn ladies not to combine tights and sandals, suggesting instead toeless hosiery for open toe shoes.

Women who have their legs on show for the first time in months this summer should also ensure they use adequate sunscreen to protect against UV rays.

Lily Allen causes storm in hosiery... and little else

Lily Allen causes storm in hosiery... and little else
Lily Allen's recent topless photoshoot, while it didn't attract much criticism from her fans, at least drew together several rumours that she was uncomfortable taking part in the shoot.

The singer was pictured wearing bunny ears, a pair of tights and nothing else for a set of shots with i-D magazine.

However, Lily is not known for backing down to pseudo-criticism and quite openly set such reports straight through her Twitter page, particularly those held by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

She said: "Just saw Perez's views on my topless i-D pics. It may come as a surprise but I'm completely comfortable with getting them out."

Earlier this month, Lily was described as one of the most negative Twitter users, with many of her posts detailing bad dreams and crying, while Jamie Cullum and Jimmy Carr were altogether more upbeat.

Third time not a charm for Sarah Brown

Third time not a charm for Sarah Brown
As the wife of a prime minister or president, it is only natural that you assume people will judge you on your dress sense - after all, you're constantly in the public eye.

And while Sarah Brown, the wife of prime ministerial husband Gordon, clearly knew this to be the case, she didn't quite live up to the high expectations which other first ladies such as Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni have set before her, according to Sandra Howard of the Daily Mail.

The journalist and former wife in politics explained that en route to Italy for the G8 summit, a pair of too-pale tights did nothing other than make Ms Brown's legs look much bigger than they are, with a "sober" black jacket also hardly complementing the cream skirt she paired it with.

While sticking with the hosiery, and opting for a swing jacket, striped skirt and peep-toe platforms, Sarah then undermined herself with a wide belt, Ms Howard added, though managed to save herself towards the end of the day by losing the legwear altogether.

Many women will happily agree: it's not often that hosiery detracts from an outfit!

Ms Brown was praised by the RSPCA this month after she declined to eat veal twice when attending the G8 summit.

Children 'must pick up their socks'

Children 'must pick up their socks'
Children should be taught the importance of clean clothes from a young age as a means of setting them up for an easier and self-conscious life in future years, it is believed.

Donna Bruschi, writing for the Examiner, explained that teenagers in particular must have reinforcement for responsible behaviour, noting that parents ought to treat laundry with the laws of natural consequences.

If these are adopted, clothing such as socks that aren't washed will remain dirty and smelly, in effect forcing the kids to consider personal hygiene in the house, she added.

From here, Ms Bruschi said hosiery and other items will build a strong base for learning about washing, giving younger ones a little bit more in terms of necessary skills and independence while lightening the load on the parent.

White socks have experienced a renaissance in recent weeks following the death of Michael Jackson, who pioneered the look with tight black trousers and black shoes to highlight the contrast.

Scarlett titillates in torn tights

Scarlett titillates in torn tights
As part of its push for success in the closing months of 2009, Mango has gone all-out attack, hiring no less than Scarlett Johansson to promote its products.

Scarlett, best known for her performances in Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, is pictured rocking the punk look for the organisation, pairing a tight-fitting black dress with a leopard-skin top.

However, it's the unconventional approach to legwear which may catch the eye of many, with the Swedish beauty donning a pair of laddered tights to complete the look in a more slapdash way than many have come to expect from her.

The deal came soon before Scarlett's husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, announced to Glamour magazine that he would like to adopt a child, explaining that there are many young people in need around the world already.

Foot odour is 'embarrassing but avoidable'

Foot odour is 'embarrassing but avoidable'
Foot odour is something most people would rather gloss over or avoid demonstrating, yet to keep them covered is only going to make the problem worse, according to one expert.

Leslie A Bray of the Examiner noted that many sprays and powders can make the situation worse, so a back-to-basics approach is very much preferred if a person is to succeed.

She explained that by pairing cotton socks with low or high-top trainers, there will be less chance of any foot-based mishaps.

For women, stockings with cotton on the toes and sole are also a good investment, the expert continued.

Feet in heels, sandals and dress shoes - when worn without socks with shorts - should never be treated with powders either, Ms Bray added, as this can cause feet to sweat and start the problems up all over again.

According to Embarrassing Issues UK, soaking feet in salt water and modifying a diet to exclude the likes of onions and garlic are also known remedies for foot odour.

Cut-out leggings - the future of fashion?

Cut-out leggings - the future of fashion?
Many different items of clothing seem to become more popular after someone takes a pair of scissors to them, with hosiery being no exception in the new fashion market, it is said.

Deidre Wengen of phillyBurbs.com explained that celebrities and fashion designers are beginning to embrace the fashion, such as legwear stalwart Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga and Rihanna - though it is a style that's worth questioning, she emphasised.

She said that she particularly enjoys such edgy fashion choices, especially when they seem to exhibit an element of fun.

Ms Wengen continued: "However, I find it hard to believe that women are spending money on pre-cut leggings when you can probably just create a DIY version for half the cost."

One person who caused a little controversy with her choice of hosiery this month is Lily Allen, who wore tights, bunny ears and nothing else in a topless photoshoot for i-D magazine.

Hosiery should 'never be ignored in new look'

Hosiery should 'never be ignored in new look'
Bling jackets, slouchy skirts and a lot of metallic sheens will be blinding people on the streets of the Western world this autumn, according to a fashion writer.

And Nancy Wells of the New York Examiner emphasised that accessories should never, ever be ignored when it comes to decking the body out in this look for autumn, with tights and leggings in particular being handy additions.

She explained that many designers are adopting metallic-look hosiery as a "staple under virtually every outfit on the runway" and has a certain "futuristic" quality to it.

Of course, some things never change, with Ms Wells also emphasising the role of black tights in the next few months, particularly when they're paired with miniskirts.

Leggings should never be used as a substitute for trousers, however, with Chelsea Bauch of the Decider Chicago recently noticing how many "staunch advocates" of the trend are making it a strangely acceptable fashion.

BBC expenses extend to £50 of socks

BBC expenses extend to £50 of socks
The raft of expenses scandals continues in the UK, with the BBC again disappointing the journalistic community at large with its latest announcement of gift expenditure.

While £666 was spent on 14 Molton Brown gift sets and a further £250 spent on other toiletries, controller of BBC One Jay Hunt also managed to splurge £50 on luxury socks for a leading supplier, choosing the softest material possible: cashmere.

The TaxPayers' Alliance was particularly angry over this socks purchase, with Matthew Sinclair, research director at the organisation, telling the Daily Express: "Some of these claims are a clear abuse of public money."

However, the list of 'unnecessary' expenditures continued, with Alan Yentob - who is believed to earn between well over £300,000 - claiming £160 for a dinner with Nigella Lawson to discuss her contract.

Maybe she should have just cooked for him at her place!

Nigella may no longer be the diva of cookery on TV, however, with Sophie Dahl being offered her own BBC cookery series last week.

Grace Jones rocks the Jurassic look

Grace Jones rocks the Jurassic look
Grace Jones continues to go from strength to strength with her music career, with her latest outings to Germany and the UK showing off her crazy fashion sense once again.

The one thing she certainly got right was her legwear, with the 61-year-old defying her years by slipping into a pair of fishnet stockings to delight the assembled masses at Stuttgart's Jazz Open and again at Latitude here in dear old Blighty.

And while the fishnets were no doubt eye-catching, it was her vertical disc-like hat which caught everyone's attention, making the singer look similar to a dinosaur.

Diane Von Furstenburg made a splash earlier in the year, when the high-end fashion designer - at the age of 62 - donned a pair of fishnet stockings on the front cover of Purple magazine.

Peaches bowls over fans in stockings and tights

Peaches bowls over fans in stockings and tights
Peaches Geldof, the daughter of Boomtown Rat Bob, has decided to strip down for the good of Miss Ultimo again, showing a strange elegance which the company evidently loves her for.

Despite provoking questioning opinions elsewhere about her tattooed midriff, legs and arms, Peaches still manages to look stunning in the shots, which were snapped in a deserted bowling alley, as she frolics in pink and grey numbers for lingerie buyers.

Of course, her look isn't complete without legwear, with the wild child pulling up a pair of neon pink stockings for one shot while embracing a classic pair of fishnet tights in another.

It could be that Peaches is going for a classic 1950s glamour look, though either way, Miss Ultimo are no doubt proud of her efforts.

Partying did catch up with the young socialite recently however, with Peaches falling asleep during a TV interview with Fearne Cotton in the back of a New York taxi cab.

Marilyn Monroe's bra and stockings auctioned

Marilyn Monroe's bra and stockings auctioned
An unnamed businessman from Hong Kong is now the owner of a prototype Wonderbra-esque brassiere and stockings belonging to the silver screen's golden girl, Marilyn Monroe.

Items belonging to the actress and singer went for $5,200 (£3,170) last weekend, with the strangely-designed bra giving the beauty a chest boost via a two-strap double-cup design created to do the hard work that a modern foray into plastic surgery would sort out now.

The bra and stockings were only expected to attract bids of around £2,000 before they were sold at the weekend at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel in Heathrow.

Earlier in the month, Marilyn Monroe's bathrobe fetched a whopping $120,000 (£73,278) in Las Vegas, while her necklace also went for $56,000 (£34,200).

Over 40 and still love knee-high socks? Not a problem

Over 40 and still love knee-high socks? Not a problem
Deborah Boland and JoJami Tyler explained that while many people see it as stylish and sensible, it is not as fashionable as individuals believe and as such, they must be paired with certain outfits to ensure the wearer does not look old before their time.

The pair noted that knee-high socks look extremely wrong with jeans and ballet flat shoes, as this "delicate" combination can be overpowered with such legwear.

Regardless of what kind of trousers the woman is wearing, the pair also asserted that open toe sandals are a ridiculous thing to wear with knee-high socks as they make someone look like "a dowdy old lady on her way to the senior's home".

Instead, Ms Boland and Ms Tyler recommend dress trousers, though as soon as peep-toe or open-toes are worn, the bare foot rule must be observed.

A new look detected in the fashion world this month is that of cut-out leggings, which have been spotted on Lady GaGa, Rihanna and perennial legwear lover Lindsay Lohan, Diedre Wengen of phillyBurbs.com asserted.

Russell Brand hits NYC in meggings

Russell Brand hits NYC in meggings
Russell Brand continues to go up in the world, with the comedian and presenter being asked to cover the MTV Video Music Awards yet again this year despite the controversy he sparked last year.

Some things never change though, notably Russell's attire, with the Sachsgate prankster donning his usual big hair, huge sunglasses, black vest and - of course - those stylish male leggings which only he can seemingly pull off to perfection.

It is hoped that the hosiery fan won't offend all and sundry when he hosts the big event later this year, following his comments last year about the Jonas Brothers' virginity and former president George W Bush.

Somehow, it's hard to think that Russell Brand will tone down his act at all, making for some possible great viewing!

For those people who are surprisingly unaware of his style, one of Russell Brand's famous self-assessments in terms of his fashion is that he resembles an "S&M Willy Wonka".

Re-wearing clothes is 'chic'

Re-wearing clothes is 'chic'
A number of items in the legwear world may be much more desirable in the current climate and trends in the style sector, according to one expert.

Nicole Smallwood, the fashion market editor at Marie Claire, explained it is understandable that celebrities are turning to older or well-used items of clothing instead of worrying over being spotted in the same outfit more than once.

Commenting on the likes of leggings and tights, which are seen as leading accessories for the current market, the expert explained: "I think it's a considered purchase now rather than an impulse buy.

"It's all about thinking how you are going to wear this item, can it be trans-seasonal and can you wear it in spring/summer/autumn/winter and 'am I going to get a lot of use out of it?'"

Originating in France, Marie Claire prints editions in 29 countries and embraces fashion trends seen everywhere from the catwalk to the high street.

Sock thieves claim £14k of hosiery

Sock thieves claim £14k of hosiery
One socks fan took her desires too far in the wrong direction, resulting in her arrest.

Carmen Alvarado Talavera, a 46-year-old employee of Carolina Hosiery in Burlington, was charged in an American court with larceny by an employee as well as felonious possession of stolen property after she stole no less than £14,000 worth of socks from her workplace.

To rub salt into the wounds of her employers, Carmen went on to sell the legwear at a local flea market, with officers recovering up to £8,500 of stock from a nearby storage unit.

The discovery follows reports of a large-scale theft from the company, who told police about the issue only a few days before arrests were made.

Socks recently caused a furore in the press after it was discovered that controller of BBC One Jay Hunt spent £50 on luxury socks using licence payers' money.

Socks are saving grace for Christina Milian

Socks are saving grace for Christina Milian
Most women are able to sacrifice their comfort for style with the use of high heels, yet for one pint-sized singer, her experience with stilettos was just a bit too much.

After attending the Rising Icons event in New York, R&B singer Christina Milian could take no more of her shining amber shoes and following the get-together, she removed them to go barefoot on the city streets, the Daily Mail reported.

However, the streets aren't exactly known for their cleanliness and within a few minutes, Christina - partnered by her husband-to-be The Dream, a rapper and producer - decided to don a pair of sports socks to save her feet.

While the white hosiery was not exactly the perfect match for the rest of her outfit, the singer still managed to look pretty glamorous.

Christina and The Dream both posed topless for a recent photoshoot with Vibe Magazine, in one of the publication's steamiest features yet.

Emergency spare tights are 'always necessary'

Emergency spare tights are 'always necessary'
The big bag look is an important part of any girl's existence, according to a leading fashion designer.

Karen Millen, in her company blog, revealed that she is a major hoarder of items on certain days and in order to match this demand for commodities on the move, a huge bag is necessary to lug all these items around in style.

And one thing in particular is needed in any self-respecting girl's bag: an emergency pair of tights, she asserted.

Ms Millen explained that helpful hosiery should always be to hand in any situation in case laddering occurs or the relentless British weather affects a woman's leg warmth, listing it with the likes of her iPhone, makeup, perfume and laptop in terms of essentials.

This week, Karen also described faded biker jeans as an "urban classic" and a piece of clothing that should be in wardrobes across the country.
