Britney plumps for knee high socks

Britney plumps for knee high socks
Britney Spears has a long and distinguished history of outlandish, individual outfits and it seems her latest look is no exception.

The singer was seen out and about in Los Angeles in a pair of knee highsocks - an item of legwear not seen since Alicia Silverstone in Clueless about 15 years ago, the Daily Mail observes.

She was wearing the ladies socks as she stepped out to get a coffee, before the sight of photographers soon changed her mood, the newspaper reports.

Meanwhile, it seems she has no intentions of just sitting back and wearing the same old socks forever.

Britney was spotted visiting a lingerie boutique in Santa Monica, People magazine reports, where it seems she picked up a few new items - perhaps including some funky tights or a pair of sexy stockings.

Superhero chooses leggings

Superhero chooses leggings
Wonder Woman may never be the same again after ditching her famous star-spangled outfit for a more modern costume.

The superhero will be clad in a brand new outfit that includes a pair of leggings - a far cry from her previous attire - in the 600th edition of the comic which has been running for nearly 70 years.

Her new image is the creation of Michael Straczynski from DC Comics.

"She's been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941," he explained to the New York Times.

"If you're going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility."

Wonder Woman's appeal went truly global back in the 70s thanks to the television series, starring Lynda Carter as the eponymous heroine.

Chick digs green socks

Chick digs green socks
Birds' fashion sense is all too rarely reported, but it seems a week-old chick have found a way of standing out of the flock, it is reported.

Little Crane, an African crowned crane, has been dressed in a pair of green sock to help its feet develop, the BBC reports.

The chick, born a week ago at Paradise Park in Hayle in Cornwall, has curled toes and staff at the park have turned to a pair of socks to rectify the problem.

Now the chick is well on the way to a normal gait and the socks have been removed.

Little Crane is not the first member of the animal kingdom to don a pair of novelty socks.

Farmers in Australia recently found sheep sporting some organicsocks made from spear grass that had wrapped itself round the animals' lower legs.

Online retail expected to grow

Online retail expected to grow
The online retail sector will grow by over 36 per cent over the next 18 months, a new report has found.

People buying socks online could be helping to boost the internet retail market, after the latest PayPal Online Retail Report found that the online retail sector is expected to grow by £8 billion from its current value to be worth over £30 billion by the end of 2012.

The report shows that if current growth levels continue, ten per cent of all retail sales will occur online.

Commenting on the findings, the director of the Centre for Retail Research Professor Joshua Bramfield said: "It will continue to expand and of course there will be some companies that double every year and there are other companies that grow by only ten per cent.

"Obviously there will be plenty of companies that will grow quickly."

He added that online shopping will never completely replace traditional high street stores.

Brosnan 'used to tights'

Brosnan 'used to tights'
Pierce Brosnan is probably more used to sporting a dinner jacket and bow tie than wearing an item of clothing usually reserved for women.

It seems Brosnan, the fifth incarnation of James Bond, is perfectly happy wearing a pair of tights though, according to a Press Association report.

The star was required to wear bright blue tights for his role as Chiron the Centaur in Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief, which is now available on DVD.

"Yes I had a bit of CGI but I look good in blue tights. After Mamma Mia I'm used to tights," he is reported as saying.

"It takes a real man to wear tights," he said earlier in the year about the filming.

The issue of male actors not wearing tights has made the news recently after Russell Crowe eschewed the legwear for his latest role as Robin Hood.

Soldiers to benefit from sock drive

Soldiers to benefit from sock drive
Soldiers who serve on the frontline in places like Afghanistan face all manner of hardships, not least of which is the problem of freezing feet caused by not having enough socks.

That is one reason behind a family in the US organising a community sock drive to send pairs of socks to troops serving abroad, Weny-TV reports.

Another problem facing the soldiers is the problem of cleaning their socks while on tour.

"Because they're fighting, they don't have any running water, they don't have any way of cleaning their socks out, and they're desperate for socks," said Pam Weachock, owner of Market Street Coffee & Tea, who is helping out by offering discounts in her shop if people bring in a pair of socks.

Last month, the Warrington Guardian reported on a similar initiative in the UK to send much-needed socks to British soldier serving in Afghanistan.

Stockings may not be the answer for Iran

Stockings may not be the answer for Iran
Footballers' strips are usually pretty standard affairs - a short sleeved shirt, shorts to the knees and a pair of long socks.

Not so, it seems, for the Iranian girls' football team, which may not go to the Youth Olympics in Singapore next month because of an issue over their kit, according to a Press Association report.

The kit consists of stockings, a cap and long-sleeved tops in order to reveal as little as possible after FIFA banned hijab headscarves.

However, the deputy head of Iran's physical education department Marzieh Akbarabadi does not feel this goes far enough and has threatened to withdraw the team from the competition.

Nylon stockings made the headlines after recently celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first time women could pull on a pair of tights made from the new material.

Sock firm MP to meet government minister

Sock firm MP to meet government minister
The MP for Bosworth is to meet a government minister over fears that a business in Leicestershire could have lost out on a lucrative Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract because of computer system failure.

HJ Hall of Hinckley has been making socks for the British Army, Navy and Airforce for the last 80 years but lost the deal to Northern Irish company that manufacturers its socks in China.

The meeting is to take place after Bosworth MP David Tredinnick raised the plight of the 128-year-old business in the House of Commons.

He asked: "Is [the minister] aware of the anger in my constituency because the reverse bidding for the contract for the supply of socks did not work effectively?

"Does he understand that HJ Hall, which has supplied socks for three generations, lost the contract because it could not make its bids within the existing system, and will he please look into the issue?"

Gemma Arterton in clash of the socks and shoes

Gemma Arterton in clash of the socks and shoes
Clash of the Titans star Gemma Arterton has joined this summer's fashion trend of teaming up high-heel shoes with a pair of socks.

The actress, who also starred alongside Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace, wore her knee highsocks with a set of strappy high-heel shoes at an event to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the launch of Net-A-Porter.

The black ladies socks complemented her classic black maxi dress.

Ms Arterton is not unaccustomed to her legwear making the headlines after she donated a pair of leopardskin tights to Ruddington Framemakers Knitters' Museum, the Derby Evening Telegraph reported.

Her funky tights joined nearly 30 pairs of stars' stockings at the museum, including luxury socks from the likes of Jenson Button, Andy Murray and Marti Pellow, where visitors are invited to match the legwear to the celebrity.

Tights right for colder days

Tights right for colder days
Wearing shorts and t-shirts is normally a pretty casual look that you wouldn't want to wear for an evening out, but the Independent has some useful advice to make the most the look.

The newspaper says that tan is "the colour of the season" and advises women to go for a pair of shorts in the colour teamed with a colourful t-shirt tucked in.

This look can be paired with leggings or tights on colder days, the paper adds.

Or if you are not too keen on revealing a spot of leg, then longer shorts may be the right option.

Someone not afraid to show off her legs is pop singing sensation Lady Gaga, who recently angered Beatles fans by playing John Lennon's piano in a pair of fishnet tights and a black leotard.

Knee high golf socks on show at US Open

Knee high golf socks on show at US Open
Whether it is to iron out differences between some of the top players or to chip away at the leaders' advantage, it seems some of the challengers at US Women's Open golf championship donned knee highgolf socks for the 65th edition of the event.

Ai Miyazato and Sakura Yokomine sported the golf socks at the Oakmount course in Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Yokomine managed to finish a respectable joint tenth, while Miyazato was way down in a share for 31st.

The two Japanese golfers say the knee highsocks are fashionable, while also helping with circulation and keeping the muscles fresh, Golf Digest reports.

Paula creamer from the US won the event in a pair of white ankle-high pop-socks trimmed with pink to match the rest of her outfit.

Good running socks 'vital'

Good running socks 'vital'
Runners normally take a great amount of care deciding on a decent pair of trainers or spikes, but choosing the perfect pair of running socks is not so well-documented.

According to running-mad Angie Ferguson of Florida's news-press.com, socks are as integral to a runner's performance as a proper pair of shoes.

"Choosing the wrong pair of socks can lead to an uncomfortable run, sweaty feet, blisters and a week or more of recovery," she explains.

"As a coach and a runner, I recommend that you give as much thought to choosing your socks as you do your running shoes."

She adds that many runners still opt for poor quality socks over good pair of cottonsocks.

One runner who no doubt has a pretty good idea of which socks to buy is 100-metre world-record holder Usain Bolt, who recently said that he would not run in the UK next month because of tax reasons.

Tights 'are fashion must-have'

Tights 'are fashion must-have'
There has been no shortage of celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan, Kylie Minogue and even the unlikely figure of the Lord Chancellor Ken Clarke, who have been sporting tights this year.

Now it seems the celebs are making fishnet stockings a fashion must-have, at least for the Daily Record anyway.

The newspaper said: "Even Kate Moss, who normally opts for bare legs, tried the trend, making fishnets the hottest hosiery to be seen in."

In addition, fishnet stockings are flattering to all leg shapes and classic black tights "make an impact".

Shops are buying in more of the legwear after the summer festival season saw many performers wearing fishnet tights, the paper added.

Meanwhile, according to the Chicago Tribune's Ellen Warren, stockings can be the ideal remedy for pale legs in the summer.

She said: "Naked legs are all the rage, but wearing stockings never goes out of style."

Are sock sales boosting credit card use?

Are sock sales boosting credit card use?
Spending on credit cards in the UK in shops and online grew by a tenth (9.9 per cent) in June compared to the same month in the year before, new figures show.

While a full breakdown of spending on things like ladies socks and tights is not available, the Barclaycard Retail Card Spending Index shows that people are using their credit cards more online and on the high street.

This is the fourth month in succession that spending on cards has risen by more than eight per cent year-on-year.

General retail spending was also higher in June 2010 than the same month the year before, the latest BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor shows.

According to the British Retail Consortium, the effects of the Budget measures have not yet been felt by consumers.

A spokesman said: "I think consumer confidence will take a serious knock once the impact of that is actually felt, but for the moment spending has not been hugely affected."

Coloured sock search yields Papal approval

Coloured sock search yields Papal approval
Most people probably wouldn't travel all the way to Rome in order to quench their desire for colourful and interesting socks.

One man, however, claims to have been forced into an international search to satisfy his need for vibrant, coloured socks.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, the man, known only as the Urban Gardner, describes his inability to find men's socks of a colourful enough hue in the US and his search for socks in France and Italy.

"Perhaps my most inspired sock purchase, however, came in Rome last November at one of several shops that cater to the ecclesiastical trade on a small street near the Pantheon," he explained.

"I bought surprisingly affordable mid-calf socks in Papal purple."

The socks come from Gammarelli, the Pope's official tailor.

Colourful socks designed to spice up a drab business suit have been made popular in recent years, with newscaster Jon Snow penchant for wearing vibrant cottonsocks on the Channel 4 News programme.

Stockings girl turns Material Girl

Stockings girl turns Material Girl
Madonna's new clothing range has a new face in the form of Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen.

The 16-year-old is photographed on the advertisement for the new brand in pair of black opaque tights that are a little less controversial than the stockings she wore recently at the Warped Festival in California.

She performed with her band The Pretty Reckless in a pair of see-through tights and suspenders at the event.

The Material Girl range is a collaborative effort from Madonna and her daughter Lourdes that will go on sale from August 3rd, exclusively at Macy's in the US.

Madonna recently wore her own provocative fishnet stockings for an advertisement for her own brand sunglasses that she has developed with help from her friends Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

Musical to put new spin on tights story

Musical to put new spin on tights story
Taking its cue from the likes of Monty Python's Flying Circus and the Goons, a new show about Robin Hood is to open in New Zealand, it has been reported.

Daniel Habedank is to take on the tricky task of musical direction for Robin Hood: A Musical Comedy Spoof, The Aucklander reports.

"I used to hate musicals when I was growing up. But working on the show has made me look at them differently. I can't deny that I'm drawn to the melodies," explained Mr Habedank.

Stockings are likely to be the order of the day for cast members as the show is probably more akin to the Men in Tights spoof film than the more brutal and realistic offering from Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe.

Crowe sparked controversy when it emerged that he had shied away from the Errol Flynn approach to the legend and ditched tights for a more pragmatic legwear option.

Thigh-high Argyle knit socks hit the catwalk

Thigh-high Argyle knit socks hit the catwalk
Miucca Prada, granddaughter of the fashion house's founder and head of the Miu Miu brand has thrown up a few surprises with her new collection, it has been reported.

The designer has come up with some knitted socks that reach to the thighs and come in a range of colours, the Independent reports.

"Anyone who normally buys theirs in packs of three needs to adjust their sock-buying habits," writes Susannah Frankel in the newspaper.

Apparently, the socks need to be folded over to the knee and worn with footwear as outrageous as possible.

It's not the first time that socks have stolen the show in the fashion world this year.

Fashion for Lunch reported last month that Oscar de la Renta added a touch of chic to all his outfits with a pair of sheer cotton pop socks and strappy sandals.

Socks boost online sales

Socks boost online sales
Online retailers saw internet purchases soar in the month of June, according to the latest IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

June witnessed total online sales increase by 20 per cent year-on-year in the UK, with purchases for items such as socks and tights contributing to a 22 per cent rise in the clothing sector.

A combination of the good weather, the World Cup and Wimbledon are being seen as the main reasons behind Brits spending £4.4 billion online during the month.

The figures represent the second successive month with year-on-year growth of 20 per cent or more, meaning that the first six months of 2010 have yielded a 15 per cent increase on internet-based sales compared to the first six months of 2009.

"We're seeing evidence that the e-commerce sector is returning to health - both in terms of business confidence and online sales," commented PayPoint.net managing director Michael Norton.

SockShop is one of over a hundred e-retailers that contribute regularly to the monthly survey.

Sheer black tights 'will be autumn must have'

Sheer black tights 'will be autumn must have'
As the likes of Kate Moss, who has always favoured bare legs, are turning to wearing something on their legs, sheer black tights and fishnet stockings will be everywhere by the autumn, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Sarah Mower predicts that before the year is out we will be considering sheer black tights "in a new light".

She argues that while opaque tights will always stick around, she increasingly feels that sheers will be "achieving fashion-inevitability".

"Sheer tights and fishnets go with the new mid-calf skirt lengths," she explained.

"A denier below 25 is what seems avant-garde and edgy now."

The comments chime with those made in the Daily Record, which again cited Kate Moss's recent penchant for fishnet tights making the legwear the "hottest hosiery to be seen in".

Socks cover monkey business

Socks cover monkey business
In the world of high-stakes smuggling, trying to get 18 monkeys past airport security by stuffing the creatures into some socks might seem a little crazy.

That is the method, however, that one Roberto Zavaleta Sol Carbrera attempted to use to enter Mexico with animals wrapped around his waist.

Security staff at Mexico City International Airport noticed the smuggler behaving suspiciously and also noted the bulge under his clothes.

Upon searching Mr Carbrera they discovered 18 endangered titi monkeys stuffed inside socks. Two of the creatures had died on the flight from Peru.

He had carried the animals in his suitcase, but transferred them to his person in the socks to try to avoid x-ray searches of luggage.

The monkeys, which are native to South America, can fetch high prices on the open market.

BB housemates in tights tug-o-war

BB housemates in tights tug-o-war
Big Brother housemates are no strangers to interesting challenges, usually offered as a means to getting more food or having a party.

The current crop of BB hopefuls, the tenth and last to be part of the Channel 4 series, has been joining in the tradition with a set of tasks that included a tights tug-o-war contest.

Two pairs of tights were tied at the feet end and then the other end of the stockings was placed over the heads of two contestants.

They then had to pull in opposite directions to establish the Big Brother tights tug-o-war champion.

Winners of the competition now get to enjoy a special champagne party in the house.

In another task, housemate Keeley fell and damaged her ankle, requiring a trip to hospital.

Meanwhile Irish student Caoimhe quit the show after six weeks in the house.

Flight socks urged for high-risk DVT passengers

Flight socks urged for high-risk DVT passengers
People who are at risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) while flying have been given guidelines on how to prevent the condition.

The wearing of flight socks, such as special compression stockings can stop DVT for those most at risk, the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) has claimed.

A new report that looked at people's fitness to fly noted that anyone who is either at moderate or high risk of DVT should think about flight socks as part of a series of measures to take to prevent the potentially fatal condition.

Moderate risk flyers are those that have had DVT before, are pregnant, obese, have blood clots easily or anyone who has had surgery in the last four to eight weeks.

High risk passengers are those who have suffered from DVT before and also have another risk factor such as cancer or have had surgery in the last four weeks.

DVT is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein and can also affect the arm, when it is known as Paget-Schrotter disease.

Do couples buy more socks?

Do couples buy more socks?
Singletons spend more than £250,000 a year more on essential living costs over a lifetime than people who live as part of a couple.

This is the verdict of new research by uSwitch.com, which suggests couple might have more money to spend on things like novelty socks, funky tights and golf socks.

According to the study, single people have an average of £4,794 a year less disposable cash to spend than a person who is in a couple.

Moneymaxim.co.uk managing director Mark Bower said there is no doubt that single people have to fork out more for essential living costs such as mortgage payments and utility bills.

"They probably have their own car, rather than a car [shared with] the family, and they can end up spending a bigger proportion of their income as a result," he explained.

Online clothes sales 'boosted by sunny weather'

Online clothes sales 'boosted by sunny weather'
Online clothes sales enjoyed a bumper June because of the summer heat wave, it has been claimed.

It seems that the hot weather meant that people were more likely to stay at home and buy socks online rather than wander around high street shops.

According to market analysis firm Verdict Research, the combination of needing to update wardrobes with summer wear and not wanting to spend hot days trawling round shops meant Brits stayed at home to buy their clothes.

"Buying online is a quick and easy way of getting summer clothing without having to spend time traipsing around the shops," explained Sarah Peters, a retail analyst at the firm.

Her comments come after the latest IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index reported that online clothes vendors saw a 22 per cent increase in sales in June compared the same month in 2009.

Over one hundred online retailers, including those that sell socks, tights and stockings, contributed to the survey.

Mad for tights?

Mad for tights?
Mad Men, the hugely popular trans-Atlantic TV show enters its fourth series, with the fashion styles of the early 1960s on display.

In 1964, where the new series begins, the demure, elegant style of the 1950s was about to be replaced by the more exuberant and colourful fashions of the 1960s.

Things like mini skirts and go-go boots with coloured tights were about to take over from sheer stockings and opaque tights.

So far it is not known what the likes of Betty or Don, two of the show's characters known for their classic approach to style, will be wearing in the new series.

Fashionista, a blog for the style-conscious, is in no doubt that the Mad Men and women should be adopting some of the more vibrant coloured legwear and general fashion trends of the 1960s.

The new series premiered in the US yesterday (July 25th).

Men's sock saga rolls on

Men's sock saga rolls on
After Jeremy Paxman famously bemoaned the lack of room for manoeuvre, it seems that Marks and Spencer is facing another complaint about one of its products.

At the recent annual general meeting, chairman Sir Stuart Rose was taken to task about the longevity of the firm's men's socks.

One angry shareholder felt that the cottonsocks on offer from the firm were simply not up to scratch, claiming that they "fall to pieces when you look at them".

The board responded by claiming that as most of them wear the socks, it would not have escaped them "if the socks had fallen apart on sight".

Concerns over underwear are nothing new for the company - BBC presenter Jeremy Paxman wrote to the company to complain that their men's underpants wimply did not offer enough room.

Businesses in the town of Corning in New York State in the US have been getting into the charity spirit by helping to raise hundreds of pairs of socks for American soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, it has been reported.

The Socks for Soldiers drive saw businesses offering discounts and special offers for anyone bringing in new pair of men's socks or sports socks that could be sent to the soldiers, the Star Gazette reports.

Some 248 pairs of socks were collected, with the legwear items being sent to Tell Them Thanks, a charity established to help troops on the frontline.

Shoppers 'start purchase online'

Shoppers 'start purchase online'
Two-thirds of shoppers begin their search for a product online, according to new research.

The potential for online retailers to tap into this trend was highlighted by the study from comScore, which suggests that half of these internet searches lead to an online purchase.

According to the comScore study, which was commissioned by Searchandise Commerce, the "path to purchase" for most shoppers begins with a combination of looking at search engines and retail websites for information.

Shoppers, who could be looking for a pair of socks or tights online, consult an average of 4.1 information sources, the report says.

The importance of search engine rankings was also highlighted, with those at the top associated with relevance and quality.

"Attaining top position in search results is key to winning a higher share of clicks and sales," explained Searchandise Commerce president and chief executive officer John Federman.

The news comes as online retailers in the UK reported a bumper June, with sales rising 20 per cent year-on-year.

Nude tights 'are back'

Nude tights 'are back'
As summer reaches its apogee and women around the UK are still worried about their winter-look pale legs, it seems that flesh-coloured tights are back in fashion.

Undoubtedly much easier than spray tan and healthier than lying on sun bed, the nude, beige or tan-coloured tights appear to be the favourite method to achieve that healthy summer leg look, according to the Daily Mail's Anna Pursglove.

"Yes ladies, tan tights are back," she said.

Apparently, celebrities including Carla Bruni, Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker and Claudia Schiffer have all been spotted out and about in the summer stockings.

"Retailers report that sales of natural shades in general have soared," explained Ms Pursglove.

The news comes after the Daily Telegraph's Sarah Mower predicted that sheer black tights will be the must have for autumn.

She said that by the time the year is out we will be considering sheer tights "in a new light".
