Man attempts to hide 50 snakes in socks
An Iranian man is suspected of attempting to smuggle 50 snakes out of Thailand, after being detained shortly before a flight.

The 23-year-old man was found to have 50 live snakes in his suitcase, all hidden inside pairs of socks.

He was stopped and searched after customs officers received a tip-off that his bag was likely to contain illegal goods.

After being detained he told the authorities that he bought the snakes in Thailand and that he had permission to take them out of the country to add to his reptile collection.

The snakes have since been sent to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to be looked after, while the man remains in custody on suspicion of being part of an animal smuggling gang.

This is an ongoing problem in Thailand and in recent months a diverse collection of wild animals, including turtles, baby bears, panthers, monkeys and leopards have been found in outbound luggage.
