Style-conscious men not wanting to make a fashion faux pas at a formal event this summer should stick to wearing black socks, according to one expert.
Writing for the BBC, fashion critic James Sherwood asserts that black, or sometimes grey, socks are the only kind which should be worn with traditional morning dress at occasions such as Ascot.
Coloured socks and patterned socks
may be popular for other occasions but Mr Sherwood claims that when teamed with formal dress they tend to look "second rate".
Concerning the rest of a race-goer's attire, the style guru advises donning a tightly knotted tie and ensuring that ties, waistcoats and handkerchiefs are all co-ordinated but not matching.
Meanwhile, women heading to the races were recently instructed to model "elegant" tights
to give a little colour to their legs rather than covering themselves in fake tan.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, fashion designer Louise Kennedy said: "There is nothing worse than a very pale girl who has a very dark tan. If you need colour on the legs opt for hosiery
in a natural colour."
