Bare-look tights 'easiest way to look tanned'

Bare-look tights 'easiest way to look tanned'
While a lot of women (and men) may decide to go for the fake tan with a range of products to make their legs look healthy and glowing, one beauty expert has suggested another method that will avoid those embarrassing orange hands.

Bare-look tights that give the appearance of colour on legs without all the hassle of smothering yourself in lotions or the expense of a tanning salon could be the easiest way to achieve that summer look, according to the Times beauty editor Sarah vine.

She said: "Besides, unless you're actually going to be outside in the sunshine, it's much easier to just stock up on bare-look tights.

"These have come a long way since the dark days of American Tan, and are now so light and so fine they truly are hard to spot."

These are perfect for chilly evenings or the office, but maybe not ideal for the beach, she added.

If you have to go for a fake tan, then the advice is to wax at least 24 hours before applying and always use extra moisturiser to look after the skin.

Pixie likes stockings a Lott

Pixie Lott, who is fast becoming Britain's top pop princess, wowed fans as she arrived for an interview on Radio 1 in pair of hold-up stockings.

She teamed the black stockings that came just above her knees with a mini skirt and sleeveless top.

In the past she has said that her style is all about having fun and is not based on anyone in particular.

Shesaid: "When I wear clothes or costumes, I like my legs to be free – you don't want everything hanging out, but I like to show off my legs."

The 19 year-old starlet was visiting the Radio 1 studios for an interview after recently retuning from Liverpool where she had been filming for the Hollyoaks music show.

Her new single, Turn It Up, is released on June 7th while she is to play at the Camden Roundhouse in July as part of the iTunes Festival.

Stockings for Last Girl On Earth Rihanna

Pop and R&B star Rihanna looked like she had no need of an umbrella at a concert in Athens recently.

The Grammy Award-winning singer was on stage wearing thigh-high stockings and a woollen leotard that although warm-looking, did not cover much.

While performing at the Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv in Israel, the Barbadian was sporting another racy leotard replete with fishnet stockings and black boots.

She toned down her normally revealing apparel while in Jerusalem, however, wearing a long skirt and covering her head and shoulders with a large scarf while walking around the Holy City.

Currently on her Last Girl On Earth tour, she said she had an "amazing" time in Israel.

Meanwhile in another case of fashion edginess, Rihanna made a stab at making bum-bags look cool.

After performing in Dublin, she was seen wearing a leopard print Dolce and Gabbana version of the favourite of security-conscious tourists.

Girl sparks sock craze in memory of twin sister

An eight-year-old girl has taken her family's long-running tradition of making donations to local hospitals in the form of socks to a whole new level.

Bethanney Winder has been donating socks to hospitals along with the rest of her family ever since her twin sister Faith died from congenital birth defects nine years ago, the Nevada Appeal has reported.

Faith was remembered for her brightly-coloured socks during her hospital visits and her sister Bethanney has decided to take the sock craze to all the schools in Carson City.

She took her Tiny Toes Sock Drive, which started at her own school, to other schools and it is now a competition between schools to collect the most socks.

Mother Christine told the paper: "The fact that she would want to do this is just amazing for someone so young.

"I'm proud of her compassion she has for other children."

Recently, a San Francisco-based charity has been calling for people to donate socks for another worthy cause - to help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Stockings 'never go out of style'

Stockings 'never go out of style'
While the current trend this summer is to show off bare legs and hopefully top up the tan in the process, stockings are always a good bet.

This is the view of Ellen Warren of the Chicago Tribune, who claimed that the bare-leg look is not for everyone and stockings can be the answer to worrying about showing off porcelain legs.

She said: "Naked legs are all the rage, but wearing stockings never goes out of style."

More advice on what to go for in the legwear range came from Christene Barberich, editorial director of the fashion and shopping blog Refinery29.com, who told the paper: "Go for sheer, pretty stockings in colours that match your skin tone."

Stockings appear to be in vogue at the moment, with a range of celebrities spotted wearing the classic legwear.

Rihanna, Pixie Lott and Madonna have all made the news with some eye-catching examples of stockings.

Socks and sandals get Brits top spot

Socks and sandals get Brits top spot
Even if England doesn't come home with the World Cup this summer, there is an area in which travelling fans from the UK will undoubtedly come out top - being the worst-dressed tourists.

The socks-and-sandals look is being blamed for Brits being classed as the 'worst-dressed tourists', it seems.

Research carried out for travel website TripAdvisor found that Brits abroad were considered the people with the least sartorial elegance.

The poll of 2,717 European travellers, including 732 Brits, ranked British holidaymakers as being less well-dressed than both Americans and Germans.

There was little surprise to find that Italians, known for designer brands, were regarded as the best-dressed tourists while on holiday.

FabSugar in Australia recently argued that wearing socks with sandals could be carried off with style if people were adventurous enough to defy tradition.

Kylie keeps suspense up with a pair of stockings

Kylie keeps suspense up with a pair of stockings
Pint-sized Aussie pop goddess Kylie Minogue might be better remembered for donning a pair of jeans and oily t-shirt as Charlene in Neighbours, but recently she has been wowing crowds with her daring stockings and suspenders.

Wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier stockings-and-suspenders ensemble at the amFAR New York Inspiration Gala at the New York Public Library, Kylie was certainly not about to be tinkering around any engines.

After rumours abounded about a split from her Spanish model boyfriend Andres Valencoso, the pair arrived at the event together.

Kylie later changed into another outfit to present an award to Ricky Martin while Valencoso strutted down the catwalk in a patterned silk dressing gown.

It seems stockings and charity go together, after a San Francisco based organisation called on people to donate tights and old hair clippings to help clean up the BP oil spill.

Socks for soldiers campaign

Socks for soldiers campaign
British soldiers serving in Afghanistan will not have to worry about getting cold feet before going into battle following a campaign that saw over 1,600 pairs of black sports socks being donated to troops on the front line.

The community sock drive was the inspiration of Dot Glassey, whose son Daniel is serving in Afghanistan, the Warrington Guardian reports.

He had complained of a lack of socks while on tour in the inhospitable country.

Richard Nicholson from the First Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, collected the black sports socks after a coffee morning and appeals raised 1,600 pairs.

In the US, the Nevada Appeal recently reported on an eight-year-old girl's crusade to collect socks for local children's hospitals that sparked a competition between schools to raise the most socks.

Bethanney Wilder started her Tiny Toes Sock Drive in memory of twin sister Faith who died as a result of congenital birth defects.

Miley causes sensation in fishnet stockings

Miley causes sensation in fishnet stockings
Miley Cyrus, perhaps better known as the doyen of children's entertainment in her role as whiter-than-white Hannah Montana, has caused a sensation with faked lesbian kiss with one of her dancers while stage.

Cyrus was performing on ITV's Britain's Got Talent in a pair of fishnet stockings, high heels and a tiny leotard when she moved in for a tender moment with one of her entourage as part of the dance routine.

The fishnet tights coupled with the kiss made the choice of song - Can't Be Tamed - seem all the more appropriate.

Miley didn't go as far as Britney Spears and Madonna when they performed together, of course.

There was nothing simulated about the on-stage snog between Madge, who recently wore some racy fishnet stockings herself for a new advertisement and Britney at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

Daisy shows how stockings should be worn

Daisy shows how stockings should be worn
Model Daisy Lowe has been dancing around in racy photo shoot for Esquire magazine showing off exactly why she is so popular.

She sported a range of legwear for the shoot for the men's magazine.

In one shot she is sitting and appears naked except for a pair of thigh-high green stockings.

While in another picture the daughter of Pearl Lowe and rock star Gavin Rossdale was wearing a negligee and another pair of stockings.

The photo shoot doubled as a film shoot, in which the 21-year-old was filmed prancing around in her undies and stockings.

She was looking a bit better than when she was snapped at a supermarket recently wearing a white vest and denim shorts without any tights.

Perhaps she should have listened to Ellen Warren of the Chicago Tribune who recently advised women that stockings never go out of style.

Socks to preserve modest Scots' blushes

Socks to preserve modest Scots' blushes
Naked bike rides might be everyone's cup of tea, but this Saturday (June 12th) will see cyclists around the world stripping off to their birthday suits for an event to raise awareness about climate change.

The Team Great Britain event will see riders in Edinburgh cycling through the Meadows in little more than their counterparts, however.

Socks will be used to cover the modesty of the participants after a less than enthusiastic response from the local police, the Scotsman newspaper reports.

Event organiser Giselle Wajdner told the paper that similar events had not much luck in Edinburgh in the past but was hopeful for better success this time around.

"We'll be wearing nipple tassels, socks, and a couple of other tiny bits and pieces – just enough to keep it just within the law," she said.

Team Great Britain Bike Week runs from June 19th to 27th and will see wide range of activities and events designed to get people out on their bicycles to help the environment.

Black tights make Claudia look chic

Black tights make Claudia look chic
Newly-appointed expert movie buff Claudia Winkleman is probably more used to curling up on the sofa to watch all the latest Hollywood releases than stepping out on the red carpet for glamorous events.

But the BBC presenter showed she hasn't lost her sense of style and looked elegant in a pair of black tights for the opening of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition recently.

She wore the tights with a printed minidress, posing for cameras with husband Kris Thykier.

One of the few guests who turned up in tights, she perhaps had listened to advice of the Chicago Tribune's Ellen Warren who said that while bare legs are all the rage, stockings never go out of fashion.

Someone who is no stranger to fashion tights - Trinny Woodall - also attended the event.

The fashion guru, who knows a few things about stockings and tights, showed off her pout for the cameras.

Stockings 'back in fashion'

Stockings 'back in fashion'
While it has been quite obvious that a whole host of celebrities from Kylie to Madonna have been favouring wearing stockings and other outrageous pieces of legwear such as ripped fishnet tights, it has not been obvious that this trend has extended to the high street.

Until now that is, after the retailer Debenhams reported a sharp increase in the sale of stockings.

The high street shop reported almost tripling in the sale of black suspender belts in May compared to April, selling an extra 238 sets.

Weather has played a part as much as celebrities, it seems, with the company saying that women have been left unsure what to wear.

A spokeswoman for the company, Ruth Attridge said: "Stockings and suspenders, just like leggings, have become the popular alternative to tights."

Recently Lady Gaga was out and about in Berlin in ripped fishnet tights and Kylie attended an amFAR charity event in New York in a pair of black stockings.

Kapoor statue 'resembles tights'

Kapoor statue 'resembles tights'
A new 164 ft statue in Middlesbrough by the sculptor Anish Kapoor has raised a few eyebrows after similarities with certain items of clothing were noticed.

The Times described the work, called Temenos, as like a very big pair of fishnet tights stretched between two very big rings.

The statue, which is 360 ft wide, will be joined by four more gigantic works at a total cost of around £15 million, according to the paper.

"All sculptors have their idiosyncrasies. Kapoor's is a proclivity for gigantism," said the newspaper.

Perhaps the sculptor had the likes of Lady Gaga on his mind when designing the gigantic series of hoops.

The singer has ruffled a few feathers with her antics after she attended a baseball game in New York in little more than a studded bra and fishnet stockings.

Brownies' sock pet project

Brownies' sock pet project
A group of brownies have been turning their attention to doing something for stray and abandoned animals at the Livingston County Humane Society shelter.

Girls from brownie troop 2049 in Pinckney collected hundreds of socks and made them into toys for the animals, according to the Livingston Daily.

It said: "The girls took the donated socks and stuffed them with catnip or tennis balls and turned them into 380-plus toys for the animals at the shelter."

Collecting socks for charity seems to be catching on in the US, after a sock drive was launched to collect footwear for young children in hospitals.

The Tiny Toes Sock Drive recently saw schools competing to collect the most socks and was the idea of Bethanney Winder, whose twin sister Faith died from congenital birth defects.

Buying celebs old socks is 'unhealthy'

Buying celebs old socks is 'unhealthy'
People's obsession with celebrities is beginning to take a turn for the surreal with a growing trend of stars' old clothes being bought by members of the public.

Buying the old socks and dresses of film stars and princesses over the internet is a fad too far, according to the Observer's Victoria Coren.

"The world is swamped with old socks and T-shirts that have been flogged off by everyone from Paris Hilton to Bono," she complained.

"We shouldn't be buying these wealthy celebrities' unwanted stuff, they should be buying ours."

She also points out that buying secondhand clothes from celebrities means you get all the drawbacks of old clothes without benefiting from the main plus side - that they are cheap.

Old socks from less famous people were recently donated to British troops serving in Afghanistan after the mother of a soldier organised a campaign.

Florence gets in the festival mood with a pair of socks

Florence gets in the festival mood with a pair of socks
Florence and the Machine front-woman Flo Welch eschewed the normal festival get-up of a pair of green wellies, instead opting for a pair of socks and open-toed shoes.

The You've Got The Love singer was at the Isle of Wight Festival showing off her unusual approach to the socks and sandals debate.

It seems the star also has a slightly strange take on head wear, tweeting that she spent a whole morning with a wet towel around her head - as a hangover cure from drinking a touch too much champagne.

The Twitter fan let us in on the more glamorous side of being a pop star, telling fans: "Side of stage for Jay-Z with Beyonce, Kanye West and Chris Martin, we all just cheered each other, totally weird, totally amazing."

Perhaps she wasn't aware that her choice of socks with open-toe shoes was one of the reason behind Brits being classed as the worst-dressed tourists, according to a survey by TripAdvisor.com.

Stockings facts undressed

Stockings facts undressed
For most people they are just something to be bought online and probably never give a second thought to the notion that there could be a long history behind them.

But stockings, it would appear, have a long and venerable tradition stretching back centuries, according to Helen Turner in Wales Online.

Stockings formed an essential part of Elizabethan men's fashion, she claims and even Shakespeare had some of his most famous characters dressed in the legwear.

The real history of stockings comes from the twentieth century, however, with hosiery evolving from silk or rayon to nylon during 1940s.

"In World War II, stockings weren't widely available due to clothing rationing and the diversion of silk and nylon production for making parachutes and barrage balloons," she explains.

Wearers of ladies' tights recently marked the 70th anniversary of the first time women could pull on a pair of nylon stockings.

Smelly socks 'can fight malaria'

Smelly socks 'can fight malaria'
Most people would probably opt for some insect spray or a citronella candle when enjoying a nice evening in the tropics as a way of stopping dreaded mosquitoes having a feast at your expense.

But a team of scientists from the central Netherlands University of Wageningen has shown that a smelly old pair of socks can be just, if not more, effective than the traditional malaria remedies, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reports.

Mosquitoes, it seems, are attracted to the pungent aroma of a pair of well-worn sports socks because of a combination of fatty acids, ammonia and lactic acids that are present in foot odour.

Researcher Renate Smallegange said: "I decided to combine these substances in one mixture. The results of the experiment showed that this mixture was very attractive to the mosquito, much more so than the components individually.

"The next question to investigate was how effective it is when compared to odour from human sweat."

Just over the border in Germany socks hit the headlines with a world record attempt at a sock washing line by amusement park workers.

Sheep socks - would ewe believe it?

Sheep socks - would ewe believe it?
Most people would probably associate sheep with such fashion accessories as woolly jumpers or fine merino scarves, but it seems in Australia there is a different craze taking the livestock world by storm.

Sheep wearing socks have caused a stir among local farmers, according to Queensland's Courier Mail.

The socks are made from spear grass, thriving as a result of recent rains, which is attaching itself to the sheep's wool.

Roly Hughes, a local grazier with around 3,000 sheep, said he is amazed at what he has seen and is worried the socks can pull the fleece of the sheep when they eventually fall off.

"It's just another one of those things you have to deal with in this industry. We're doing everything we can to look after our sheep," he told the paper.

Socks and animals hit the headlines for another reason recently. A Brownie troop in the US collected hundreds of pairs to create toys for sheltered cats and dogs, the Livingston Daily reported.

Gosselin's sock strife

Gosselin's sock strife
Celebrity TV mum Kate Gosselin has a slightly harder time than most when it comes to shopping for her kids.

The mother of eight - twins and sextuplets - finds keeping hold of socks the most challenging thing, however.

Lonely single-coloured socks have got her goat so much that she has banned anything other than plain white socks from her house, she claims in her latest blog.

The Dancing with the Stars TV celebrity has even taken the drastic action of donating all of the coloured socks to charity.

She's so upset about losing 16 socks a day that she has come up with a plan to avoid the socks finding their way to the "sock graveyard".

"But I tell you, I have a well-oiled sock process in place! In fact, I'd even argue that I have a sock sickness," she said.

"When the kids arrive home, part of their routine (as they call it) includes placing their socks in a sock bag that hangs on the laundry room door."

Maybe if she does find all those smelly old socks one day we might see her on another reality TV show like I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of

Here, using them to ward off those pesky mosquitoes, after Dutch scientists recently found an unusual use for smelly footwear.

England sees red over choice of socks

England sees red over choice of socks
In an all-white kit is how most people would picture the England football team lifting the World Cup at Soccer City in Johannesburg later this summer.

But the FA is turning to a little seen all-red outfit, complete with red socks, for the must-win clash with global football minnows Slovenia on Wednesday.

The strip was last seen in a friendly match against Belgium in 1970 but has only ever once been worn in a World Cup finals match.

England heroically drew nil-nil with Bulgaria while donning the red strip at the World Cup finals in Chile in 1962.

The England team socks were highlighted before the World Cup in an article in the Times as boasting some advanced material that is designed to stop the socks from wrinkling or creasing as the wearer runs around.

A Korean sock dilemma

A Korean sock dilemma
Part of living in Australia is wandering around in bare feet or flip-flops all summer long, according to one Aussie woman who moved to Korea.

Writing in the Korea Times, Mary-Jane Liddicoat has spoken of having to deal with bemused Koreans who are not used to seeing people without a pair of socks on.

Rather than the usual greeting, she often met with queries about why she was not wearing socks.

"Don't get me started on socks," she explained.

"I have lived in Korea for ten years and it never ceases to amaze me the regularity with which people greet me with 'You're not wearing socks!'"

Obviously as an Aussie she would never dream of wearing socks and sandals together - something Brits are all too guilty of doing, especially when on holiday abroad.

Sock-a-day Jerry Lewis

Sock-a-day Jerry Lewis
Among a few idiosyncrasies that Jerry Lewis has is a penchant for giving his suits away after he's worn them because he can't bear to have them cleaned, according to fellow comedian Chris Rock.

The Terrace Standard reports that in an interview on the Tonight Show in the US, Rock also mentioned that Lewis wears a brand new pair of socks every day.

And the paper asks the obvious question - what do you do with 365 pairs of socks? Maybe he gives them away as well.

Rock was discussing his habit, borne out of a childhood of dodgy fridges, of only drinking milk packaged that same day.

With all those pairs of white socks, Lewis would probably fit in well in celebrity mum Kate Gosselin's household.

She recently complained on her blog that lone coloured socks were driving her crazy and had instituted a white-only sock policy.

Elderly urged to wear socks and shoes

Elderly urged to wear socks and shoes
Shoes need to be worn by the elderly to prevent potentially serious falls, new research suggests.

Over half (52 per cent) of old people who reported a fall were either barefoot, wearing socks without shoes or wearing slippers when they fell, according to a survey from the Institute for Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Dr Marian Hannan, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said: "On the basis of this and other studies we suggest that advice about wearing shoes whenever possible be included in fall prevention programs.

"More research is needed on the design of acceptable and comfortable footwear that provides optimal safety for older people."

Sock science has hit the headlines recently in another way. A team of scientists in found that well-placed smelly socks could be an effective means to fight malaria as the odour can attract mosquitoes.

Kids novelty socks worn for event

Kids novelty socks worn for event
Children at a nursery in Runcorn have been embracing the idea of silly fashion and have decided to turn the issue into a week-long event, it has been reported.

Novelty socks were the first item to get the treatment by the kids at Vicarage Lodge Pre-School on Highlands Road in Runcorn, the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reports.

Silly Clothes Week has seen the pre-school kids wearing some pretty unusual novelty socks with designs including silly stripes, super skulls and chessboard checks, the paper reported.

Seeing lots of kids getting involved with brightly coloured socks is not unusual, though perhaps it is not normally purely for fun.

In the US recently, the twin sister of a girl who died as a result of congenital birth defects organised the Tiny Toes Sock Drive to donate socks to local children's hospitals.

Rocky Horror stockings craze

Rocky Horror stockings craze
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the much-loved rock musical created by Richard O'Brien, is heading to Aberdeen for a run of shows at the granite city's Her Majesty's Theatre.

Headlining the event is Scottish actor Gerard Kelly, former star of classic Scots sitcom City Lights, who told the Press and Journal that it is not unusual to see men and women dressing up in stockings to see the show.

He told the paper that he went to see show a couple of weeks ago in order to familiarise himself with his role as The Narrator.

"All of these 50-year old blokes sat down in front of me with stockings and pearl necklaces on, and one of them turned round to me and said 'are you feeling underdressed?', which I thought was hysterical," he said.

Mr Kelly is best known as a comedy actor but has also taken on more serious roles such as that of Callum Finnegan in Brookside.

Sock search for lost 'sole mate'

Sock search for lost 'sole mate'
People in Canada just can't bear to part with certain items of clothing, a study of the citizens of Toronto suggests.

It seems they just will part company with lone socks that are missing their counterpart, according to research carried out by Toronto Hydro-Electric Limited in conjunction with Leger Marketing.

The survey found that almost one in five Torontonians hold on to the single sock forever in the hope of reuniting it with its "sole mate".

Another nine per cent will keep the dream alive for a year before accepting the inevitable and binning the sock.

Toronto Hydro has a solution for people suffering from sock woes in the form of its Sock Exchange.

The scheme allows customers to send in a picture and brief description of the lonely sock to an online database to see if a suitable match can be found.

Maybe people ought to take a leaf out of comedian Jerry Lewis's book - he wears a brand new pair of socks every day.

Strawberries and cream Wimbledon socks

Strawberries and cream Wimbledon socks
Tennis champ Serena Williams struck an elegant balance of classic styling with a modern twist of strawberries and cream on court at Wimbledon yesterday (June 28th).

Multiple-grand slam winning tennis star Williams wore a pair of strawberries and cream inspired socks and dress for her meeting with noisy rival Maria Sharapova.

Her white sports socks boasted some red strawberry pompoms, which completed her Wimbledon-inspired ensemble.

Sharapova meanwhile looked chic in all-white dress and short white pop socks.

The Wimbledon crowd is not unaccustomed to seeing a few interesting fashion statements, though the rule of wearing predominantly white checks some of the more outrageous examples.

At the recent French Open in Paris, Bethanie Mattek-Sands took to the clay of Roland Garros in pair of knee-high black socks, a black skirt and a pink top.

Socks and sandals look is back

Socks and sandals look is back
It may be debatable whether the look was indeed ever in vogue, but after a recent fashion show it appears that the infamous socks and sandals combination could be de rigueur this summer.

At Resort fashion week, the leading designer Oscar de la Renta added a touch of chic to every outfit with the addition of strappy sandals and sheer cotton pop socks, according to Fashion for Lunch, a website for all fashionistas.

"A trend destined for the young at heart, this style statement brings light hearted fun to spring footwear," wrote Lindsey Anderson on the website.

"Forget the old image of your granddad wearing his bright whites over unsightly strap on sandals, because this season it's all about playful elegance."

The look was recently attributed to Brits taking the top spot as the world's worst-dressed holidaymakers.

In a poll of tourists by TripAdvisor even ranked Brits below the likes of Germans and Americans in the fashion stakes.

Williams 'too hairy for tights'

Williams 'too hairy for tights'
Robin Williams, the Hollywood actor and comedian, has expressed his interest in playing the Riddler in the next Batman movie.

Tights may not be the best wardrobe choice however, as the Good Will Hunting star claims he is too hairy for them.

He said he would like to play the role in Christopher Nolan's third instalment in the popular film franchise.

"I would do Batman in a second, playing anyone," Williams said.

"I'd play The Riddler in the next one, although it would be hard to top Heath as the villain and I'm a little hairy for tights."

Robins seem to have an issue with wearing tights these days.

Russell Crowe famously ditched the legwear for his recent portrayal of crusading hero Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's blockbuster.

Sock factory job fears

Sock factory job fears
A 128-year-old Leicestershire company could be facing tough times ahead after losing a Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract, it has been reported.

HJ Hall in Hinckley has been manufacturing socks for the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Airforce for the past 80 years, according to This Is Leicestershire.

However, the firm has lost its MoD contract to a rival Northern Ireland-based enterprise that will churn out some 2.5 million socks over the next four years.

HJ Hall's sales and marketing director Anton Jenkins said: "I don't think it's right that men who are out there defending the country in all weathers should be wearing the cheapest socks the MoD can get."

Soldiers' socks recently made the Warrington Guardian after a woman whose son is serving in Afghanistan raised over 1,600 pairs to send to troops on the frontline.
