Beeb ditches tights for the boys

Beeb ditches tights for the boys

There will be a distinct lack of tights on the set of the BBC's forthcoming 15th century period drama, The White Queen.

Sources inside the corporation have revealed that tights and stockings usually associated with men's attire from the period will be ditched in favour of tight padded trousers for the male characters.

"These days tights are associated with Robin Hood movies and bad jokes," Nic Ede, costume designer, told the Daily Mail.

Production company, Company Pictures, hopes that by switching to actors in trousers instead of tights, the series will be able to lose any stigma associated with the costumes.

It has also been revealed that the actors have had their faces 'toned down' to create a more realistic perception of how they would have appeared.

The 10-part drama is based upon the first book in Philippa Gregory's bestselling historical novel series, The Cousin's War.

Starring Rebecca Ferguson and Max Irons, the series follows the life of Edward IV and his queen consort Elizabeth Woodville during the War of the Roses between the Houses of Lancaster and York.

Racy J-Lo at Sound of Change Live

Racy J-Lo at Sound of Change Live

Jennifer Lopez pulled on a revealing outfit for her performance at the Sound of Change Live concert at Twickenham on Saturday.

J-Lo wore a lacy leotard, with an ornate bejewelled trim, over a pair of fishnet tights and completed the revealing ensemble with a pair of knee-high studded boots as she wowed the crowd with her hits.

Her risque outfit choice came just days after the singer caused controversy by donning a skimpy leotard, fur bolero and thigh high boots to perform on Britain's Got Talent.

The charity concert, which aimed to highlight girls' and women's issues throughout the globe, also featured performances from Beyoncé, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora.

All proceeds from ticket sales went towards helping various projects around the world, with ticket holders able to choose the project that their entrance went towards.

Gucci, who helped to set up the Chime for Change organisation, agreed to underwrite the cost of the concert so that the maximum amount of money went into helping girls and women everywhere.

Patrons for the charity include Salma Hayek-Pinault, Alicia Keys, Julia Roberts and Sarah and Gordon Brown.

Odd socks for Evans at Glamour do

Odd socks for Evans at Glamour do

We can only assume that Rupert Evans got dressed in the dark on his way to the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in London on Tuesday night.

The Village actor stormed the red carpet wearing one blue and one red sock underneath his navy blue suit. However, the rest of his outfit, which included brown brogues and an open neck, white shirt and chequered scarf combination, was suitably dapper.

VV Brown also flashed her socks on the red carpet at the star-studded event. The singer broke all the fashion rules by teaming her beige footwear with sandals.

Even an Issey Miyake designed golden kimono couldn't rescue the French speaking singer from her fashion faux pas.

She later tweeted: "Took a bit of risk wearing this. You win some you lose some."

Unfortunately for VV this one may have to be chalked down as a loss.

Henry Holland forgets his socks

Henry Holland forgets his socks

After VV Brown and Rupert Evans became fashion victims at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards on Tuesday night, photos have emerged of another style calamity.

If Henry Holland's Beetlejuice inspired suit and waistcoat wasn't enough to warrant a call to the fashion police, then the 30-year-old designer seemingly thinking it was appropriate to leave the house without socks surely was.

Holland decided to hide his bare feet in a pair of patent black shoes, while opting for a buttoned up black shirt underneath the eccentric beige and gold striped suit. He then accessorised with some thick hipster glasses to complete his look.

The Ramsbottom-born fashionista is famous for his bold, outlandish designs and his clothes are worn by the likes of Agyness Deyn and Nicola Roberts.

Rita Ora, who is one of Holland's notable celebrity followers, decided to tone down her own appearance at the awards, ditching her outlandish ensembles in favour of an elegant evening dress.

Holland wants to see Kate in tights

Holland wants to see Kate in tights

While he may have been making his own fashion crimes on the red carpet this week, a nugget of fashion advice from Henry Holland to the Duchess of Cambridge has resurfaced.

The British designer suggested to Marie Claire in Australia that the mother-to-be should ditch the nude pumps and stockings in favour of some different tights.

It is unlikely that Holland's brash styling would fit in with Kate's chic, cautious look. However, he is not the only fashionista lining up to splash praise over Kate's appearance.

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli recently told Vogue UK that he didn't think that 31-year-old was taking advantage of her youth.

"Just because you are a queen or princess it doesn't mean you can't be sexy," said Cavalli.

"I would like to prove to the world that Roberto Cavalli can dress a princess."

Cavalli isn't the only international designer lining up to dress the Duchess. Chanel's fashion supremo Karl Lagerfeld has also set his sights on putting her in one of his designs, having recently sketched up an idea that he thought was "very much in her taste".

Hayden wows in leather leggings

Hayden wows in leather leggings

While she may have opted for a funky up-do, Hayden Panettiere showed that she certainly knows how to let her hair down during filming for the Graham Norton Show.

The Nashville star showed off her fun side dancing alongside Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke on the talk show.

The 23-year-old, who shot to prominence as Claire Bennett, the cellular regenerating cheerleader in the hit US TV show Heroes, opted for some leather-effect leggings to go with her loose fitting white top and red leather boots.

She later wrote on Twitter that only Pharrell could get her dancing on stage, adding that she attempted to "drop it like it's hot", referring to the 2004 Snoop Dogg song, which Pharrell collaborated on.

Panettiere was promoting the US country music drama Nashville, which is approaching the end of its first season on More 4 in the UK. ABC, which makes the programme in the US, has recently announced that it will return for a second series.

Hattie in flowery tights at showing

Morahan, who stars as Laura Knight in the romantic drama, appeared alongside co-stars Dominic Cooper, Dan Stevens and Mia Austen at the event at the Curzon Mayfair cinema in London.

The film, adapted from Jonathan Smith's novel of the same name, revolves around a group of Bohemian artists living in Cornwall during the early part of the 20th century.

Summer in February, which also stars Emily Browning, will come out on general release on Friday.

It was announced last month that Morahan will make her West End debut as Nora in Carrie Cracknell's production of A Doll's House later this year.

Minimise smelly feet with socks

Minimise smelly feet with socks

Wearing socks is not only a comfort and style thing, but they can also help to improve the condition of your feet.

A spate of male celebrities, such as Ryan Gosling and Jude Law, have recently taken to the streets without socks underneath their shoes, but they are all running the risk of collecting a case of bad foot odour or athlete's foot.

If sweat from the feet is allow to seep directly into the leather of the shoe, which as acts as a breeding ground for bacteria, then it dramatically increases the chances of these conditions developing.

One pharmacy told the Daily Mail that they have had a sudden rush in enquiries about dealing with foot odours when wearing shoes without socks.

"Wearing the right socks can help absorb sweat and keep the feet dry," pharmacist Omar El-Gohary said.

"People should use cotton over nylon, and make sure these are changed daily to avoid a build-up of bacteria."

So next time you pull on your loafers make sure that you are wearing a pair of socks.

Little Mix's Jesy keeps gothic look

Little Mix's Jesy keeps gothic look

Little Mix's Jesy Nelson carried on her recent gothic phase at the Isle of Wight Festival over the weekend.

The 21-year-old was spotted in an almost identical outfit to that of her appearance at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry last month.

Nelson wore a long black and white dress/t-shirt over fishnet tights and black, gothic bother boots. She also combined her outfit with a pair of knee-length black socks underneath her tights.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock joined Jesy in the tight-wearing mood, pulling on a pair of black suspenders, attached to black shorts, combined with a long-sleeve white crop top.

Jade Thirwall continued the gothic look, with a black t-shirt and a pair of black and white chequered parachute pants and a pair of white Doc Martens.

Perrie Edwards opted for an all-black ensemble, combining high-waist black jeans with a black crop top, tying a black and white floral jacket around her waist.

Little Mix performed on the BT Infinity Big Pop stage on Saturday.

Cara spotted out in grey socks

Cara spotted out in grey socks

Cara Delevigne was spotted out and about over the weekend in London wearing a striking pair of socks.

The British model combined a blue mini dress and black leather jacket with a pair of black trainers, a baseball cap and a pair of long, grey woollen socks on a night out on Saturday.

The 20-year-old model attracted a fair degree of criticism from the tabloid newspapers for her choice of outfit, with The Sun calling the arrangement "ludicrous", as she was snapped entering a hotel in the capital.

Delevigne tweeted that she was in London to watch Rihanna perform at Twickenham Stadium as part of her Diamonds World Tour.

The eccentric model recently announced that she was working on producing a debut solo album.

Delevigne has also turned her hand at acting in the past, making a cameo appearance alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Keira Knightly in the 2012 adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

Sockless shame for Tinie Tempah

Sockless shame for Tinie Tempah

What is happening to our celebrities? Tinie Tempah has become the latest male icon to be spotted out and about without socks.

The 24-year-old was snapped at a Burberry show in London on Tuesday in a black and white, animal print t-shirt, black trousers that were too short in the leg for him, patent black loafers and a mysterious lack of socks.

The Kensington Gardens event also featured appearances from tennis star Serena Williams and Kasabian's Sergio 'Serge' Pizzorno, although it is unclear whether the Kasabian guitarist followed Tempah's sockless lead.

While Tinie has has massive success since the release of his breakout single 'Pass Out' in 2010, it appears that he still has not been shopping for socks.

Yet, shockingly Tinie was not the only one to be spotted without socks, as the rapper later tweeted a photo of monoclonal male catwalk models, all lacking the appropriate attire.

Funky leggings at Walsh promo event

Funky leggings at Walsh promo event

Former Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh has been spotted out and about this week promoting a Sky Ride event in a pair of very fetching leggings.

The Bradford-born singer stepped out in a turquoise top, complete with some funky leggings and a pair of blue high-heels.

"I'm doing this to raise awareness of cycling and its benefits - it's such a great way to bring people together and promote a healthy way of living," Walsh told the Mail Online.

The scheme is designed to help promote cycling in a traffic-free environment, allowing new or unconfident cyclists the chance to ride without the worry of heavy traffic. Dozens of events have been organised across the country for cyclists to take part in.

Walsh revealed that she is planning to take part in a Sky Ride event in Leeds.

"I do cycle and I have cycled a lot over the years. I always do it a lot on holiday as it feels a bit easier and there's not so much traffic on the roads - which is why it's great that they're shutting down the streets for the Skyride," she said.

Driver heads out in fancy leggings

Minnie Driver stepped out in Hollywood this week wearing a colourful pair of feather print leggings.

The British actress could have been accused of 'peacocking' in her turquoise leggings, which she teamed with a red sleeveless t-shirt, green and white baseball cap and colourful running shoes.

Driver who recently appeared in the British romantic comedy I Give it a Year, is soon set to star in an American television adaptation of About a Boy.

She will reprise Toni Collette's role of Fiona, the mother of Marcus, who was famously portrayed by Nicolas Hoult in the original film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel.

David Walton, who has appeared as Sam in New Girl among other roles, will step into Hugh Grant's boots as the main protagonist Will.

The show will be launched on NBC in the US later this year. So far there have been no plans to bring the series to the UK.

Clooney will only wear socks once

Clooney will only wear socks once

It has been revealed that Hollywood star George Clooney will not wear the same socks twice.

A source close to the 52-year-old told the US version of OK! Magazine that the actor has a thing about only wearing a pair of socks once.

"George has his dirty socks washed and then donates them to a homeless shelter," the source said. "He just has a thing about wearing the same pair twice."

Clooney is currently shooting The Monuments Men, which will see him directing and starring alongside Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett. He also wrote the screenplay for the film, the first since his Oscar nominated script for the 2011 political thriller The Ides of March.

With much of the filming is taking place in the UK, George has no doubt filled his suitcase with fresh pairs of socks to see him through the trip.

Leggings trend hits Wimbledon

Leggings trend hits Wimbledon

Number two seed Victoria Azarenka took to the All England Club courts at Wimbledon on Monday sporting a new look as a fresh trend gripped Wimbledon.

The Belarusian, obviously cautious of the summer chill under cloudy skies in SW19, pulled on a pair of white leggings underneath her white tennis dress in her opening round match against Maria Joao Koehler.

However, Azarenka wasn't the only ladies tennis player to pull on some leggings yesterday, with Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and Czech player Eva Birnerova both sporting the legwear underneath their tennis dresses.

The leggings must have proved to be a lucky garment as all three safely negotiated their first round matches, with the unseeded Birnerova knocking out number 26 seed Varvara Lepchenko on the way.

With better weather forecast for later this week, the likelihood of spotting any other top ranking females sporting the leggings-look remain slim, but with two weeks of tennis remaining there may be more sightings of interesting legwear in the not so distant future.

More unusual legwear at Wimbledon

More unusual legwear at Wimbledon

Following on from Monday's display of unusual tennis garments, another female tennis player has been spotted out on the Wimbledon courts sporting some curious legwear.

Unseeded American Bethanie Mattek-Sands pulled on some long white socks for her first round match on Tuesday, but that wasn't the only thing striking about her appearance.

The tattooed world number 55 also dyed her hair a blend of green and blue for the championships, which are notorious for a strict white dress code.

However, unlike the leggings sported by some players on Monday, Mattek-Sands' knee socks didn't help to propel her into the second round, with the 28-year-old crashing out to Germany's Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

Mattek-Sands has garnered a reputation on the WTA Tour for her wacky dress sense, having turned up to a pre-Wimbledon party in 2011 dressed in a fluorescent yellow dress adorned with tennis balls.

Back on court on Wednesday, all eyes will be on Jelena Jankovic, Eva Birnerova and Victoria Azarenka to see if they continue with the leggings trend that they set on Monday.

Leggings prove unlucky for Jankovic

Leggings prove unlucky for Jankovic

Following on from her trendsetting wardrobe choice on Monday, Jelena Jankovic continued with the leggings theme on day three of Wimbledon.

However, the number 16 seed became one of the many casualties of a tumultuous day out of the courts of the All England Club.

Jankovic crashed out in her second round match in straight sets losing to compatriot Vesna Dolonc 5-7, 2-6.

The white leggings, which saw her safely through against Britain's Johanna Konta, failed to prove a lucky charm against the world 97.

Jankovic wasn't the only high ranking player to crash out in the second round on Wednesday, with number two and three seeds, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, both suffering early exits.

Ana Ivanovich and Caroline Wozniacki also saw their quest for Wimbledon glory cut short, losing convincingly to unseeded challengers.

With Jankovic and Azarenka's exits, the mantel of top leggings wearer falls on the shoulders of Eva Birnerova, who will play Puerto Rico's Monica Puig in Friday's third round match.

Socks under wellies: A Glasto trend

Socks under wellies: A Glasto trend

Glastonbury is famous for setting trends throughout the years, whether they are fashion or music, and it appears that this year another new one has emerged.

Hundreds of festival goers have been spotted on Worthy Farm sporting a clearly visible pair of funky socks underneath their equally trendy wellies.

With rain expected over the next couple of days the importance of a good pair of warm socks is likely to be high, as revellers wade through the festival's famous mud.

Festival goers have poured through the gates of the 11,000-acre Somerset site since Wednesday, eager to catch acts such as Mumford & Sons, Dizzee Rascal and The Rolling Stones, who are playing the festival for the first time in their 51-year history.

The festival gets underway on Friday, with the Arctic Monkeys headlining the opening night.

The Sheffield band, who recently announced an arena tour this autumn, will be expected to debut parts of their new album AM, which is released in September.
