Foot wear has been used to jazz up some of the new looks appearing on the catwalks, after the Seattle Times proclaimed that "frumpy is the new funky".
This autumn will see styles that are "both retro and wearable", according to the newspaper, with cardigan sweaters replacing tunics and skirts getting longer.
However, many of these outfits at New York's Lincoln Center were given some extra dazzle with tights
in opaque solids or patterns, with some designers adding ankle socks
over the tights or replacing them with knee-length socks.
"People are finally more interested in covering up," the newspaper reports designer Yoana Baraschi as saying.
"We are trying to be sexy and be alluring at the same time."
X Factor star Cher Lloyd recently showed her own take on this "granny" look, with thick woollen tights paired with pink ankle socks
