Go monochrome with black tights

Go monochrome with black tights

Leona Lewis was the latest celeb to embrace black and white, wearing a striking monochrome outfit to an event announcing her new role as a Body Shop brand activist.

The singer wore an unusual cape, with the top part designed to look like a white shirt with a black tie.

She teamed the dramatic garment with opaque black tights and some skyscraper black heels with white detailing on the toes.

The only splashes of colour were her bright pink lipstick and red nails.

Leona wore her light-brown locks in loose curls tumbling over her shoulders and kept her jewellery minimal, opting for a chain necklace and matching bangle.

If you want to steal Leona's monochrome style, black tights are a great way to add an edge to the outfit, or if you're feeling adventurous, why not try some of our black and white striped tights?

Amber goes bold in block colour

Amber goes bold in block colour

Amber Atherton attended the Esquire Big Black Book launch in a dramatic bright green dress, showing that colour blocking is still bang on trend.

The former Made in Chelsea star teamed the skater-style dress with black tights and black skyscraper heels, which elongated her legs, as she attended the event at Sushi Samba in London.

The modest dress had a high neckline and three-quarter sleeves, but featured some unusual sheer side panels.

She accessorised with a gold clutch and a wide gold bangle and wore her blonde hair loose.

Amber attended the event with fellow Chelsea dweller Millie Mackintosh, who accessorised her black leggings and black blazer with her newest piece of jewellery; her diamond engagement ring.

Other attendees included Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright, rapper Tinie Tempah and model David Gandy, as well as Millie's husband to be Professor Green.

Mirren dazzles in black tights

Mirren dazzles in black tights

Helen Mirren dressed in a simple floral dress, accompanied with a black cardigan, black handbag, black tights and black court shoes, exuding a timeless sense of style and class.

Having ditched the pink hair from the BAFTAs earlier this year, she accessorised with a pair of flamboyant earrings to top her outfit off with a splash of colour.

With the cold weather continuing it appears that a number of stars are still pulling on their thick black tights and making a fashion statement at the same time.

The Oscar winning actress picked up the Empire Legend Award, with the film magazine highlighting her roles in The Queen, State of Play and The Long Good Friday as some of her finest performances.

Elsewhere Danny Boyle collected an Outstanding Contribution Award and Skyfall director Sam Mendes scooped the Empire Inspiration Award.

Willow Smith shows off socks

Willow Smith shows off socks

Willow Smith stole the show at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in a simple white lace dress teamed with a denim jacket.

The 12-year-old fashion icon looked every inch the pop star in the sweet white dress with gold trim, while the denim jacket and her tough-looking black boots stopped the ensemble from being too cutesy.

The Whip Your Hair singer added a splash of colour with some neon yellow socks, which could just be seen peeping out over the top of her ankle boots.

Other young attendees at the awards included Willow's older brother Jayden who wore all black, but also added a splash of colour with his red socks.

Bella Thorne, Selena Gomez, Kristen Stewart and Khloe Kardashian all also walked the red carpet at the event, which was hosted by Josh Duhamel.

Most of the stars made the most of the sunny LA weather in shorts or pretty mini dresses.

Downton star rocks black tights

Downton star rocks black tights

Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Lady Cora in Downton, rocked a thoroughly modern outfit as she attended the opening of West End show The Book of Mormon.

The star ditched the stockings her character will usually favour for some black tights, which she wore with a short skater-style navy blue dress, which certainly wouldn't have got the Earl of Grantham's approval but gets a fashion thumbs up from us.

A bright blue quilted jacket and black leather ankle boots finished off the outfit and ensured that the actress stayed warm on the wintry night.

Elizabeth wasn't the only Downton star walking the red carpet, with Brendan Coyle and her on-screen daughter Laura Carmichael also making an appearance.

Kate Winslet, Yasmin Le Bon and Damian Lewis also attended the show.

Jessica Hynes models sheer tights

Jessica Hynes models sheer tights

Blending into the crowd wasn't an issue for comedienne, author and TV star Jessica Hynes as she attended the Royal Television Society Awards this week in a brightly-patterned dress.

The pink and purple knee-length number was worn with an eye-catching pink fur shrug tied with ribbon and some sheer tights.

Jessica finished off the outfit with some gold t-bar shoes tied with pink ribbons and a simple silver bangle. Her brown hair was worn loose over her shoulders and she kept makeup to a minimum.

The former Spaced star was joined at the event at Grosvenor House by the likes of Sheridan Smith, Jennie McAlpine, Olivia Colman and Brooke Vincent, all of whom stuck to black ensembles.

However, Melanie Sykes and Natalie Gumede joined Jessica in embracing colour, wearing red and green gowns respectively.

Zara Martin in sheer black tights

Zara Martin in sheer black tights

DJ, presenter and trendsetter Zara Martin looked great as she donned a pair of sheer black tights at the premiere of Trance in London this week.

The Show Me Your Wardrobe presenter wore a micro mini dress, which barely peeked out from beneath her fur-collared grey coat, as she walked the red carpet.

Her sheer black tights were very much on display though as she accentuated her pins with sky-high black platform shoes.

The tights were something of a departure from Zara's usual look as she is normally seen with bare legs, or in her favourite leather leggings.

The ensemble was completed with a black and cream lace handbag and some discreet silver jewellery.

Zara was joined at the premiere by the film's stars James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson as well as director Danny Boyle.

Tuppence Middleton and Tom Cullen also attended.

Black tights for Kate at parade

Black tights for Kate at parade

The Duchess of Cambridge opted for a low-key and warm outfit for a St. Patrick's Day parade in at wet and miserable Aldershot on Sunday.

Recycling the same emerald green Emilia Wickstead coat that she wore at last year's event, she combined this with a conservative black hat, gloves, shoes, warm black tights and a polo neck, neatly finished off with a shamrock brooch.

However, her heeled court shoes caused her some bother as she became entangled in a drain while at the parade of soldiers from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at Aldershot barracks.

The Duchess was joined at the event by the Duke of Cambridge, who was dressed in full ceremonial dress for the Irish Guards as part of his role as a colonel in the battalion.

Both Royals were garnished with a spring of shamrock, with Kate fixing a new sprig to the collar of Domhnall, a seven-month-old Irish wolfhound, who is the battalion's official mascot.

Helen gets it right in tights

Helen gets it right in tights

Former Corrie actress Helen looked lovely in an all black outfit at last week's TRIC Awards, with her modest black dress with a high collar and long sleeves a far cry from the form-fitting bright pink numbers she has been seen out and about in lately.

The I'm A Celebrity… star even covered her pins in some opaque black tights, but did flash a little flesh thanks to the lace detailing on the top of her dress.

Helen completed the look with some peep toe black shoes with white detailing, while her bright blonde locks were pulled back off her face into her trademark bun.

Also at the event was Helen's jungle buddy Ashley Roberts, who opted for a slightly more summery dress in pale pink and green. She also ditched the tights in favour of showing off her perfectly tanned pins, which were elongated by some nude court shoes.

Back to black tights for Holly

Back to black tights for Holly

Holly combined a pair of black tights brilliantly with a studded black and navy dress and plain black high-heels, which ensured that she was the best dressed star at the Voice event at Soho Hotel in London on Monday.

Holly is known as something of a style icon and her relaxed yet fashionable clothes are often copied by her fans, who'll be hoping for some style inspiration from her when the show returns to our screens at the end of March.

Judges Jessie J, Tom Jones, Will.i.am and Danny O'Donoghue, as well as co-presenter Reggie Yates, also appeared alongside Willoughby (who was wearing black tights) to unveil the start of the second series of The Voice.

Blind auditions get underway on March 30 with judges hoping to find a successor to series one winner Leanne Mitchell.

Grace Woodward models block colours

Grace Woodward models block colours

Stylist and TV presenter Grace looked bold and beautiful in a violet shift dress over a black roll-neck top and black opaque tights, which gave the outfit a 1960s vibe.

She added a purple coat to the ensemble, but despite her bright attire it was the accessories that really did the talking.

A purple leopard print bag and a matching bow in her hair added a fun element to the outfit while some statement earrings and a number of rings kept the look edgy.

Grace finished off her look with some peep toe silver shoes with bow detailing, showing that when you are as stylish as she is it's ok to break the rules and wear tights with sandals.

Other attendees at the Shop to the Beat event in London included Made in Chelsea star Francesca Hull, Pixie Lott, Zoe Hardman and George Lamb.

Wacky socks for Downs Syndrome Day

Wacky socks for Downs Syndrome Day

Whether they are bright, wacky, jazzy or just plain barmy, the Eastbourne and District division of Mencap is encouraging people to pull on a fun pair of socks and donate £1 towards World Downs Syndrome Day on March 21.

"They can be brightly coloured, mismatched, long socks, printed socks - just as long as they are on display and people ask about them and a donation made to help those locally with the disability," Paul Durrant from Eastbourne Mencap said.

The local group hopes to raise £1,000 for World Downs Syndrome Day in order to support local people with Downs Syndrome by putting on special activities and workshops in their residential and day centres.

Although it was only officially adopted by the United Nations in 2011, World Downs Syndrome Day is entering its eighth year and has helped to spread awareness about Downs Syndrome across the globe.

So pull your socks up and give a pound to help raise funds for a good cause.

Morgana Robinson is a lady in black

Morgana Robinson is a lady in black

Morgana, who is known for The Morgana Show, showed off her pins in a glamorous thigh-skimming black mini dress with a slashed neckline and three-quarter sleeves.

She continued the black theme with black tights and black suede ankle boots. Her blonde hair hung loose to her shoulders and she donned heavy black eyeliner for a smoky look.

Morgana was not the only lady at the event rocking black, with Lucy Pinder teaming leather-look leggings with a black blazer and a white shirt and Clemmie Moody embracing monochrome in black trousers and a black and white shirt.

However, some of the male attendees were more than happy to model some colour, with Keith Lemon standing out in a bold checked suit and pink t-shirt, while Lee Nelson wore bright blue shorts.

Duchess sticks with sheer tights

Duchess sticks with sheer tights

The mum-to-be teamed her knee-length brown Hobbs coat, which she has been spotted in before, with a patterned dress from Great Plains as she flew the flag for the Great British High Street.

Now that the weather is a bit warmer, she swapped her thick black tights for some sheer hosiery and finished off the look with black heels and a clutch bag.

The Duchess wore her glossy brown locks loose and kept her jewellery simple as she met the town's inhabitants and visited a school and the Fishing Heritage Centre among other local sites.

Maternity tights, which are available in both sheer and opaque styles, ensure that women can carry on wearing stylish dresses and skirts as their bump grows and it's likely Kate will have to invest in some over the coming months.

Preeya mixes tights and shorts

Preeya mixes tights and shorts

Actress turned singer Preeya, who was attending the gala screening of Welcome to the Punch, teamed her tiny denim shorts with thick black tights to ensure she protected her pins from the winter chill.

She paired her legwear with a printed black and white t-shirt, a red studded leather jacket and a grey bobble hat for a rather low key red carpet look.

Preeya's hair was worn simply loose around her shoulders, while natural makeup meant she looked fresh and on-trend.

Wearing tights or leggings under shorts is a great way to make sure you can get more than a week's wear out of your stylish hotpants in the Great British weather.

Other attendees at the event included the film's star James McAvoy, Take That star Mark Owen and TV presenter Kelly Brook, who showed off her shapely legs in some tight-fitting leggings teamed with a grey cardigan.

Emma Owen models dress and leggings

Emma Owen models dress and leggings

The wife of Take That's Mark Owen teamed her vintage style lemon yellow dress with black leggings and a sky blue crocheted cardigan with black bow detailing as she attended the Welcome to the Punch after party with her famous other half.

She finished the look with some unusual patterned heels and some thick framed 'geek chic' glasses as well as a slick of bright red lipstick.

The pretty dress, which featured cute ruffled pockets, would be perfect for when the weather gets a bit warmer, but the addition of some leggings meant that the ensemble was also suitable for a chilly spring evening.

If you've got some summery favourites tucked away in the back of the wardrobe, don't wait until the weather gets warmer. Follow Emma's example and team them with some thick legwear so you can wear them sooner rather than later.

Mark also showed off his flamboyant style at the event, teaming his blue three-piece suit with a floral patterned shirt and chunky brown boots.

Carly Rae Jepsen rocks fishnets

Carly Rae Jepsen rocks fishnets

The Canadian pop star, who was opening for Justin Bieber, modelled thigh-skimming denim cut-offs and a heavy leather waistcoat as she danced around the stage.

Her outfit was completed by some flesh coloured fishnet tights which she wore with chunky black trainers during the energetic performance.

Carly wore her black hair loose in relaxed waves on her shoulders and kept her makeup vampy with smoky eyes and a slick of bright red lipstick.

The popstar, whose song Call Me Maybe was one of the biggest hits of last year, seemingly enjoyed the show as she took to Twitter after her performance to write: "Loved tonight! Thank You LONDON."

If you want to copy Carly's rock chick look, fishnet tights add an edge to any ensemble and are available in a range of different colours and styles.

Charli XCX works laddered tights

Charli XCX works laddered tights

The rock chick pouted for the cameras as she posed on the red carpet in a grungy ensemble.

She wore a high-waisted tartan kilt with a black long sleeved crop top and chunky black platform shoes.

Her thick black tights, which were intentionally laddered at the knee, completed the vibe, alongside her perfected pout, pale skin and dark tousled hair.

The star performed at the iTunes Festival in September but has since seemed awfully quiet.

However, her re-appearance in the public eye at the NME Awards was perfectly timed as her new album is being released in April and she'll be heading off on tour with Ellie Goulding next month, before performing some gigs of her own in the UK.

Hopefully this means we'll get to see a lot more of Charli's edgy ensembles in the near future.

Gizzi sticks to tights at NME bash

Gizzi sticks to tights at NME bash

The Scottish born beauty stuck to her own style as she teamed a beautifully bedazzled off the shoulder dress, with thick black tights and flat Chelsea boots.

The NME Awards style is very different to that of the Oscars or BRITs, which see celebrities turning up in floor length gowns, with attendees opting for more casual, trendy attire.

However, Gizzi's look came across as effortlessly cool as she mixed glam with casual, wearing her hair in a beehive style á la Amy Winehouse.

Before training to be a chef, Gizzi was a professional body piercer until she realised that it couldn't be a long-term plan.

The TV chef has hosted cookery shows on Channel 4 and made appearances on ITV1 and Sky1 cooking shows.

Although TV chefs aren't usually on the guest list for such events, her previous punk lifestyle is what bagged an her invite to the infamous awards show.
