The continued success of nylon was always a given, claims one industry expert.
As Saturday marks the 70th birthday of the first time ladies could pull on a pair of nylon stockings
, its impact is once again being assessed.
Sally Kay, chief executive officer of the Hosiery
Association, told the Pittsburgh Tribune she was not surprised about its enduring popularity, and said the hosiery
industry is forever changing.
In an interview with the paper she added: "The technology helps make the product better.
"Silk does not offer the same amount of memory that nylon does."
became popular during the second world war as silk became harder to get hold of.
Nylon was first developed by DuPont in the US by Dr Wallace Carrothers and can now be found in a wide range of consumer goods from tights
to car engines.
The company recently unveiled a new type of nylon designed specifically for the automotive industry.
