Stockings to the rescue in Louisiana

Published: 14th May 2010

An unusual approach to solving the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico has been found.

Stuffing hair into old stockings may not be the most high-tech solution to one of world's worst ever oil disasters, but it is an approach with sound scientific merits.

Matter of Trust, a San Francisco based charity is looking for people to donate old stockings and tights, even with runs or tears, to help with the clean-up operation.

They are already receiving donations from all over America and from abroad.

By re-using old hair clippings collected from barber shops and hair salons and stuffing them into the disused leg-wear, Matter of Trust has been cleaning up slicks for years.

They are now turning this well-honed technique of 'hosiery and hair' to help clean up the Louisiana coastline.

Lisa Craig Gautier, executive director of Matter of Trust said hair "soaks up skin oils, grabs oil from the pollution in the air, and it can soak up petroleum in oil spills."

BP says the clean-up operation has cost over £300 million so far.
