Socks collection for US marines
Pupils in a Shelby County, Alabama schools have been asked to take an unusual approach to supporting military personnel on active duty overseas.

Schools in Alabaster have been asked to collect together white tube socks to send off to soldiers as presents, reports the Shelby County Reporter.

Alabaster resident and member of Blue Star Mothers Joyce Bulford explained her reasons for instigating the bizarre legwear collection request.

She told the newspaper: "Our president (of the Blue Star Mothers of Alabama) has a son who is in Iraq now, and she said the soldiers' number one request was for white tube socks.

"Some of the schools have been working since October 1st, and they just finished collecting them last week."

Sock-loving soldiers lucky enough to catch a glimpse of any newspapers this Halloween would undoubtedly have been impressed with the get-ups sported by a range of celebrities.

Tori Spelling, Kim Kardashian and Nicky Hilton were among those pictured who had added interesting legwear to their costumes for Halloween this weekend.
